As a swede hearing non native Swedish speakers butcher IKEA names is one of my biggest joys online. BTW if you ever wonder what the names mean, I can translate, they're usually nouns, adjectives or places.
@sluggo206

Aren't they named after cities? I always wondered how Sweden could have so many cities. I've also heard the low-end items are named after cities in Norway, and the Norwegians aren't happy about that.

@@merene1277 So the famous Billy bookcase really is related to Billy (William), and not just a Swedish city that happens to look similar? (England has a lot of these false friends, places and names that look like modern English words but aren't related because the original Celtic or other word meant something completely different. Or two Old English words evolved to have the same spelling or pronunciation, so one is a common term while the other is forgotten except in that name.)

An oddity of IKEA catalogs, at least the paper catalogs in the US in the 2000s, was the height/width/depth abbreviations. Normally we'd write them (26" H, 72" W, 15" D). The catalog had (H 26", W 72", Ø 15"), using the Norwegian o-slash letter. I assumed the Norwegian word either starts with Ø or it's a European convention to use that symbol for depth. Is it? Americans just have to guess, "Well, the missing dimension is depth, so that must be what it means."

Hey Nick, I’m an Aussie and we have the King Furniture modular couch. It is the most comfortable couch and bed and we couldn’t be happier with it. We bought it when our second child was a terrible sleeper and would keep us all up at night. My husband needed a comfortable place to sleep while I was in the main bedroom with our non-sleeping son and our daughter had the other bedroom. It was a small 2- bedroom unit so a sofa bed was the only option. This is hands down the best we found and my husband slept on it for nearly a year 😅 Occasionally we still convert it to a king size bed when our best friends stay over with their kids. But mostly it’s just a great looking couch.

I'm putting in a good word for sofa beds. I bought one in the 90s that was 7' long because I wanted a good napping sofa. It was VERY cushy and comfortable, and it had a queen-sized bed that I slept on once to make sure the mattress was okay for guests. I think you have to try the furniture out in the store and not always buy on line. And Nick---you crack me up with your advice that none of us will need a table to seat 10 people. 😄 I had a table with leaves that seated 12 when expanded, and thought nothing of giving dinner parties for 8 or 10 or 12 people---did it all the time. I guess the younger folks don't do that, but there was nothing like sitting around a table with great food and wine, telling jokes and having a great time. Going to a restaurant doesn't come close.

I agree 100% with both your points. We had dismal success in finding the right sofa/sofa bed until we went to 4 different stores with a tape measure in hand. As for the table, it usually just two of us in our tiny house and I have a bad habit of cluttering up horizontal surfaces. We had a table custom built that goes from a 36" round to a 36x60 oval so we can have up to 6 around it comfortably. Best money I ever spent.

I inherited a vintage expandable table from my Grandma (it is probably 100 years old), and I've used it from my 20s until now. It has 2 sides that fold down and 4 leaves to make it longer. It was great in our formal dining room when our daughters were growing up, and now that I'm widowed, it fits into my smaller apartment. Some ideas are just timeless.

That flip down IKEA shelf is PERFECT for a laundry room. Keeps all your bottles and stuff tucked away in a hidden-but-accessible spot, fold down the shelf to use to fold and/or iron clothes, and then fold it up when you’re done. I don’t know how thick it is, but you could even put a beautiful print on it, and frame it out with some matching wood. Wouldn’t convince anyone it’s just a frame, but it could be a cute statement regardless. Depending on how you styled it, could also be a good alcohol cabinet with a built-in stand to put glasses, an ice bucket, and a spot for guests to mix their drinks together.

Great video and it makes sense to focus on storage, but i think this deserves a part two where you focus on furniture that is just...small. a 90" couch doesn't fit in my family room, so im thinking a loveseat with an ottoman, a corner tv stand and a half coffee table. Id love some recommendations on small size, without skimping on quality and esthetics.

Exactly ! Smaller spaces require smaller , yet adequate seating , dining , etc., pieces in proportion to the room . It seems more difficult to find well made sofas , love seats , chairs w/ ottomans that are not huge , overstuffed , shapeless blobs , that only work for open concept " warehouse size " rooms .

Included in the package I purchased have a closed coffee table that stored all the leaves (one side drops down) and the bench. When I purchased it, I lived in a smaller apartment. Proof positive - everything old is new again! Folding tables - I have a double 'gate-leg' table with drawers on both ends approx 12" wide folded up - both sides fold up to easily seat 4 - from late 1800's! (family heirloom) dark wood, round legs; Also, I have my grandma's maple dining table from early 1940's seats 4 - comes with 3 'leaves' and middle of table support leg - expands to seat 8 comfortably (but no fancy storage location or bench!). Concept of 'fold down' shelves, beds - we even had a fold down folding able for laundry and ironing board. Also, I have a nice older Danish modern sofa bed that is very comfortable for my bad back to sit and sleep on! (Danes have been doing it right for a long time!) GREAT choices you made!!

It also allows you to purchase pieces, so if the dog chews up the arm, for example, you just order a new arm, instead of having to throw out the entire couch. It also breaks down to make it easier to transport. Literally the last couch I will ever have to buy!

@@theresacopeland2451 I've owned two home reserve. My parents have Lay-z-Boys in their home. They aren't the same thing. What they are is great for spaces that are tight, don't allow you to move in a regular sofa and give you storage in a seat. (They are delivered by UPS in BOXES!) What they feel like: The body of the couch is pressed MDF and it's flat. Stubbing your toe hurts. The cushions are comfortable, the seat is at the right angle for sitting. The seat deck having the fabric that gives is comfortable. It's a 5/6 to the 10 of a recliner sofa, but it you get an ottoman to put your legs up, solid 7/8 to that 10. Where you notice the difference is in the give of the seat, and the padding on the part of the body your calves touch. Positive advantages? You can buy replacement covers and cushions to change the look. This is great because the frames hold up forever. Do use plastic to bag your storage if you eat or drink where you sit. If you're an American, a positive is that the factory is here in the US.

We have a pier wall storage bed which was marketed as an alternative to water beds. There is a small armoire on each side, with a pull-out shelf that serves as a nightstand. Bins across the top allow you to lean against them, and a light bridge joins the armoires. It was a Thomasville design and 40 years later, still is great.

I love having the smaller place or the smaller car because I never have to host and clean, or drive. I also am a huge advocate of living in a space that fits your actual needs vs. buying large and never utilizing the entire area beyond extra storage. I have found that several small nesting end tables grouped together function way better in a smaller space than a coffee table. I bought two sets of the Vasagle Nesting Tables from Amazon for a little over $100 total, and I can’t tell you how many people complement the look. They match my higher end West Elm pieces and seriously are the thing that get mentions most in my home. Plus, they are easy to move to do Yoga, workouts, or provide tables for guests outside of a fixed coffee table. Sorry for geeking out. I just love your style and appreciate the posts. ❤ They are listed as: VASAGLE Small Coffee Table Set of 2, Round Coffee Table with Steel Frame, Side End Table for Living Room, Bedroom, Office, Rustic Brown and Ink Black

21:11 that sliding closet concept is taken from old academic libraries with lots of rows of book stacks. All the stacks are squished together, you push a button on the stack you want, and they all slide to open an aisle for you. IIRC, there weren't a lot a safety features, so you were in danger of being in squished like in the Star Wars trash compactor.

I’m 52 hoping to end the rat race by 60 with above $1M. I know money is a liability to be exchanged for assets with real value like real estate (properties for rent) stocks (dividends) bonds (interest) But, what is it with bitcoin? I hear a lot about it and I'd love to diversify my portfolio.

Evelyn Infurna hooked me up with a late-stage fund that got me in on private shares of some hot companies before they hit the market or blew up. Those investments totally paid off when the companies went public and their stocks shot up. Now, I’m stoked because I’m heading into retirement with almost a million bucks in my portfolio.

I have the Truman coffee table and I love it. The storage is everything you say, but it's a BIG coffee table. It's also very heavy so once you put it somewhere, it's staying there unless you have someone to help you move it.

My husband and I got the Nera bed and Lenia under bed drawers about 4 years ago and absolutely love them. It’s the perfect space to store all of our linens and stuff. Plus it’s gorgeous. We live in a small apartment, so getting use out of every bit of space is so important-so glad you’re discussing it! And another recommendation for Article-we have several pieces from them and all are well made and look great in our place :)

Our first house was a small house with zero storage and our game plan was that have all of our furniture had to serve two purposes. Our beds all had drawer storage, we used ottomans as seating and storage and we installed shallow storage behind our doors. I love these kinds of videos, thank you so much!

So glad I found this channel, I just moved into my own place (finally no roommates) and have been itching to make it my own. Its nice to see your ideas and design opinions being talked about in a frank and artistic way. Before i moved I was lost in searching for trends, looking at a bunch of different ideas with no clear direction & you convinced me to take it slow on decorating and see what the space I'm in needs and what I REALLY want instead of what someone says I want. Thanks!

One of the best yet! I recall my parents had a couch that the full seating flipped up > full storage. Pull and push and it made into a full bed > you slept on the seat and back as a bed. Comfy! I have been considering one of the beds in a 'side table' with a drawer. Love all of these tips. Thanks Nick.

I think in a bedroom you want to have beautiful looking furniture and as less clutter as possible. So maybe an old school secretary? Together with a small movable or swivable mirror above that can double as a makeup table. And the small storage inside the desk means it looks much cleaner. Most have an expanding writing top - so very useful as a small desk. And a small laptop can also hide in a drawer. 😇

For the gym - you'd be surprised how much you can do with a yoga mat and full size mirror, some small weights (up to 1kg), stretching bands and a massage/fascia roll. Should all be able to be stored in a dresser 😅

I am so glad to see a video on this topic. This is furniture that it makes sense to pay a little extra for and that works in a small space. My grandmother had a table built like the transformer table except that there were shelves with drawers on top. She stored her company china and silverware in those top shelves. They also used to make a table like the folding table except that the middle section held 4 folding chairs. We’re too large and heavy for those chairs at this point, or I would still have one! The TV transformer table is great if you live alone but have a larger dog. We’ve found that we can teach our dogs to leave stuff on elevated tables alone, but if it’s below their noses, all bets are off!

I think it's interesting that a lot of the pieces you featured have been available in Europe for a long time and for reasonable prices as well. Probably because most people live in apartments rather than houses and we have limited living space. Extending dining room tables, hydraulic lift beds, tray lift coffee tables, and one you didn't mention, a sofa with attached chaise and storage under the chaise (similar system as the bed). Thanks for the fun video!

The King Living Delta II has lift up couch cushions storage and is very comfortable. It’s a smaller scale than the Jasper. Sitting on one now and have games, blankets and part of my sewing stash in the storage. We also have a King Living Serenade Storage bed which has storage underneath and not only does the bed tilt up to 45 degrees, but you can pull it towards you and it’s then raised and you can walk around the whole mattress to make the bed easily. Great quality furniture and looks as good now as when we bought it 4 years ago.

As someone, who had to switch from sleeping in a bed to sleeping on a couch (we don't have a bedroom) yes they are less comfortable to sleep on and we have storage underneath and I does make the cushions less soft while sitting as well. I prefer firmer cushions tho so it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's doable, just make sure to test your couches

Also, for Murphy beds, I have found that for the price that you pay for most of the options out there, you could purchase the Murphy bed kit from Rockler and have a custom one made so that you can have the functionality and the aesthetic that you want.

Back in the 80’s I had a queen sized waterbed. It had twelve drawers under it. Six on each side with a crawl space you could store a few things between the drawers. It was turned into a normal bed in the 90’s with a regular mattress. It was awesome because my room was small. I only had room for a desk because of the bed being so big but being the youngest my room was used as the guest room so my parents bought a queen. It was so nice to have a built in dresser under the bed. Made for easy cleaning when I was a teenager as well. 😂 The frame was sold off years ago but I still miss the convenience of the drawers. They were so much bigger than what you get with today’s storage beds. I almost forget the best part it was made from solid wood.

We don't have too many guests so I didn't want to dedicate a room just for that alone, so we are planning to put a murphy bed in the room and use it as a recreational space when guests aren't there.
