Just a little tip. The click shouldn't signify "treat". It should be done right after the correct action but you don't need to give a treat right away. That's why he goes for the treat after you click rather than waiting for you to bring it out at your discretion. You should start mixing up a click with praise and no treat for a few actions in a row and then treat on a random action so he doesn't expect it every other or every third.
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 4 жыл бұрын
That is a good tip! I'm just showing people how to show their dogs what the clicker is and what it means. You'll want to give lots of treats at first, then yes, you'll want to wean them off. So you have good advice for getting dogs to ease off the treats once they know how the clicker works.

Right before Easter one year I took my lab/ Sheppard to an Easter egg hunt. She wasn't feeling good because she ate a bunch of nikerette (sp?) gum the day before. A boxer walked up with his owner and the guy said sit down and be nice. His boxer sat right down in front my dog. He boxed her right in the face. You should have seen her frown when he did that.

Thank you very much for the video, very helpful. I still dont understand when I should give the command. Like if im teaching him to sit, do I click and say sit at the same time, then give him a treat? Im not sure when to give the command.
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 5 жыл бұрын
You want to start off without giving the command verbally. Once your dog is reliably sitting down then you start giving the command. You only click once they've completed the command. You don't want to click while you give the command, that'll be confusing! The second your dog's butt hits the ground is when you click. Hope this helps!

I would use small treats or break larger treats into smaller pieces. Keep training sessions short when they're younger (they don't have as much of an attention span). If your dog is very food driven you can use their kibble as a reward- just be sure to cut back on their food if you've given them a good amount of kibble. (for example, if your pup needs 2 cups of food a day and you use 1/2 cup of kibble over the course of the day for training, only feed 1 and 1/2 cups of food at meal time.)

Hi, so I have bought training treats on amazon and have been clicker training my dog. Today, I was training her to give me her paw. It worked well, but she did not eat dinner. Is there any treats that you would recommend that I could give her a bunch of but she will not be resistant to eat? She also did not eat her stick that I gave her at night. Any recommendations?? Thanks, and awesome video!!
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 6 жыл бұрын
If her food is a good training motivator I would just stick to using her kibble as a training reward (make sure not to over-feed her, though- cut back on her meals so she's not getting more in a day than she should). If her kibble isn't enough of a motivator I would try breaking the treats into smaller pieces if possible otherwise cut down on the training sessions each day :)

What is the hand command for the bow? I use a lot of hand commands along with verbal commands. We have a 13 week old Border Collie and looking for different ways to get the action we want. Already has learned: Loose Leash, Come, Sit, Lay Down, Toy names/colors. She can ring bell on door handle to go potty too. Still working on other stuff. Would love some ideas. Oh and I love your dog. He's friggin' awesome.

Hi there! What I use for "bow" is when I'm standing I bring my hand from my shoulder (elbow bent) down to my hip height with my palm flat and facing up (arm straight). Like "Take it away, Ajax!" It sounds like you're doing great with your border collie- they are super smart dogs! I'm glad you like Ajax, too :) I'm working on teaching him to "Sit Pretty".

Training doesn't have to wait! It is more difficult to hold a 2 month old's attention for sure, but it can be done! I started this with Ajax when he was 2 months old too. You just need to do quick sessions no longer than 5 minutes at a time so they don't get distracted. :) Good luck!

@kimjaxlovesnacks

You can start phasing out food once they've got the command learned reliably. I'd start giving them food every other time you ask/give a command then slowly give them less and less food. Even once they've mastered the command its good to treat them once in awhile. I still give my Ajax a treat here and there to keep him motivated :)

Am I missing something? What's the point of the clicker? Doesn't the treat let them know they've done the right thing?
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 5 жыл бұрын
The clicker captures the action the moment the dog does it. The click lets the dog know they did the right thing the exact moment they've done it- and they know a reward follows. It just makes training easier and faster.

Hey! That one can be tricky. Ajax has always been somewhat vocal. But I used the clicker to "capture" him talking. I found if I stared at him without saying anything he'd eventually bark at me. I'd click when he'd bark and reward him. Then I started selecting for the softer barks and eventually got him to "talk" instead of bark. :)

I do not like clicker training at all. Verbal markers work just as good if not better. I prefer to have my hands free. I also prefer to be constant in my teaching. I also do a lot behavior capturing which clickers are totally useless for. Clicker training is just a fad to sell people on dog teaching classes. People should be taught the proper use of verbal markers both positive and negative. Plus is just a pain in the ass to remember to keep your clicker with you where ever you go. Its just annoying when your voice works just as good. Feel fee to look at my KZfaq channel. I plan on doing a lot more dog teaching videos.
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your opinion! Clicker training definitely isn't the only way to train a dog but its easy for beginners. :) The point of clicker training is to capture a behavior quickly and consistently. It is merely a tool to help connect an action to a verbal command or hand signal. Once the dog has connected the two there is no longer a need for the clicker. I never use the clicker with Ajax on commands he knows verbally. If I teach him something new, yes, the clicker comes out until he's learned it. Thanks for stopping by!
@zemtek420
@zemtek420 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimjaxlovesnacks lmao clickers are useless when behavior capturing. Like my Ruby's bow is a behavior I captured when she stretched after she slept and stretched. Which a clicker is completely useless for spur of the moment behavior capture. And beginners can just as easily learn how to use their voice as markers instead of an annoying clickers. I know you gotta defend the clicker gimmic since you use it, but in all reality its pretty pointless when people have a voice to use instead.
@zemtek420
@zemtek420 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimjaxlovesnacks oh and its not my opinion that voice markers work just as good as clickers if not better, its fact. Any good animal teacher knows that. I think you just need to get better at using vocal markers. Its pretty easy actually. Anytime you get the urge to click say yes instead instead or what ever you want to use as the positive marker.
@kimjaxlovesnacks
@kimjaxlovesnacks 5 жыл бұрын
There's no need for demeaning language. It is your opinion, simple as that. (Not to say it's wrong because it's your opinion.) I defend the clicker training because it works for me and for others. It was how I was taught by a professional. I'm not saying clicker training trumps everything else but I cannot say that it is useless because it has worked for me very well. I've used the clicker exactly for behavior capturing as well. I've taught Ajax using a clicker and it's worked great. Everything you see him do has been taught via clicker. Thanks for your input regardless, it's good for people to know their options. Every dog is different and every person is different so its good for people to try things and figure out what works best.
@zemtek420
@zemtek420 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimjaxlovesnacks facts are facts not opinions. Its not my opinion that using verbal markers keeps your hands free, its fact. Its not my opinion that verbal markers work just as good as a clicker its a fact. Its not opinion that you always have your voice with you its fact. Its not my opinion verbal markers are better for random behavior capturing its fact that you do not have your clicker during everyone minute of the day unless I guess you super glued one to you or something lol, So if your dog does something random that you want to capture a verbal marker works all the time. clicker only works when you have it on you. I am not trying to demean you or anyone else. But to say facts are just opinions does demean others with real facts. And no where did I say clicker training was useless or did not work. Just the facts show that verbal markers are better for people to use.
