Vanilla Ice took a lot of flack for “sampling” Queen’s bass line and for good reason. He claimed changing one note made it an entirely different riff - judge didn’t but it, neither did anyone else. Jim Carey could become these characters that were so real and so funny and this was one of his best. Just more musical moments that make a good history lesson. Thanks Cliff!
@TheNeonNinja

that was from an edited mtv interview when he said that, in sarcasm after already settling and owning the rights. he's talked about multiple times, and shown the unedited interview lol.

Everybody was sampling had they known it was going to blow up being number one single & first rap song to go number one on the charts. I think they would have negotiated the used. But the lawsuit was settled they all made money. Vanilla Ice get royalties anytime either song is played now
@NativeNYerChicHK
@NativeNYerChicHK 10 ай бұрын
@@TheNeonNinjahe does NOT own the rights to the beat. He lost in court against Queen and paid them a cool 4Mil just for stealing it to use in that song. He cannot use it for anything else. He does not own it.
@TheNeonNinja
@TheNeonNinja 10 ай бұрын
@@NativeNYerChicHK ok cool. case number? I can't find it. I know the 4M number is accurate, but that was the amount SETTLED on privately. Are you talking about the pre judgement in the UK to get him served? or what they tried to do in the US? They never actually went into court. And he can absolutely still use the beat on any new version or remixes, which he has including Vanilla Sprite Remix, but as I stated before - he still owes them all royalties in perpetuity still on all versions. (I didn't mean he could go make a new version of Under Pressure and butcher it singing their lyrics lol just his insanity)

Cliff brother... In living color was special. And part of the reason why Gen X was the best generation... color didn't matter in a show that literally put Jim in the mix because " needed more vanilla " -all the damn Wayans

If I remember correctly peoples biggest beef with Ice was his attempt to claim he was a tough guy so when it came out he was from a safe middle class suburb it all came crumbling down for him. He was the original papa doc.
@The_Curious_Cat
@The_Curious_Cat 10 ай бұрын
That was the main issue. Most rappers came from the poor neighborhoods and that could be felt in their music, they had reason to talk smack, expose their situation in society, criticize the system and so many other things. Vanilla Ice was a posh boy in comparison pretending to be a tough guy and many didn't like that.

I'm THIS generation. I was born in '74, so "Ice Ice Baby" came out my senior year of high school. I drove my mom's Dodge Omni (Yeah. I know. But it was a stick shift and none of my other friends could drive one, so at least that was a flex.) with the windows down and the volume turned up when that song came on the radio. I watched In Living Color from the first show and loved Jim Carrey, and when he did this skit I remember I was watching this episode with my mom (she loved the show, too). Right after that shoe flip I laughed so hard I flipped my chair backward, so I watched the rest of the skit trapped in my chair upside down and sideways because I was laughing too hard to pick myself up. Whoever recommended this to you is someone after my own heart.

Okay, I feel I need to educate a bit. From an old guy who lived through all that I will tell you that Vanilla Ice was actually very much respected when he started rising in the rapp industry. It was when he started getting caught lying about his upbringing, winning motor races, etc... Is when people started calling him out as a fake. But some will say he's earned a lot of that back with his hard work redeeming himself like his successful building company.

Fun fact; Eminem was introduced by Jim many times in big shows, like the legendary 100-150 "Slim" walking into the MTV music Awards, leading by Em doing the song live. Jim says, "I like Em. I'm affraid of him. But I like him!" Just for anybody; on the level of Jim and Em you choose each other in this kinda situations and it happend multiple times. They probably know each other in person, or atleast what is sure, they have respect for the other one. And be honest, most people respect them too :)
