Highlights from the United Counties Division One game between Clifton FC and Newark Town which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Newark Town were unfortunate enough to have several illnesses but were able to hand debuts to Nottingham Forest and Republic of Ireland under 19 goalkeeper Theo Avery and defender Jack Eden, the latter who was awarded Player of the Match
The visitors started the game strong after and assist from Ryan Smith allowed Jammy Lloyd to put Newark Town ahead in just 6 minutes. Shortly after, Avery was called into action and made a stunning save, deflecting a shot onto the crossbar. Throughout the game the referee made a string of abysmal calls and on the 64th minute after a foul on a Newark Town player awarded the free kick to Clifton which was converted by Isaac Moreledge to bring the score level. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a player fouled and would appreciate it if a referee can come forward and explain how the player being brought down can actually be the one committing the foul on the player behind them.
Late into the game Newark would begin to create the lions share of the chances, in stoppage time Luke Andersen would have a header cleared off the line and the game would end as a draw.
