A climate change report by the Global Commission on Adaptation has recommended investing $1.7 trillion to adapt and make the world more climate change resilient. Learn the English language the world's media is using to talk about this story.
The story
A study of how the world can adapt to climate change says the richest countries must invest billions of dollars to safeguard livelihoods, coastal cities, food and water supplies.
The analysis has called for investment in early warning systems for storms and high tides and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.
Key words and phrases
adapt
change to fit the situation
• The theory of evolution states that species must adapt to their situation or die.
• It will take me a few months to adapt to the colder weather there, but I'll be OK.
gravely
very seriously
• The recent flu outbreak has left a large number of people gravely ill.
• On hearing the bad news, the diplomats muttered gravely among themselves.
pay off
succeed and bring benefit
• If you study hard now, it will pay off later. You'll get a good job and have a good life.
• My investment was a bit of a gamble, but it really paid off. Now I'm a millionaire!
Language challenge
Combine two of these to create a verb which means 'protect something from harm':
protect guard
safe shield

Hello to both of you Once again..three words similar to french words. i.e 1/ . to adapt = adapter or s'adapter. 2/ grave...= grave, sérieux...3/ to pay off : payer, rapporter. You know I am wondering if English isn't nearier to French than Spanish. I am stunned
@bbclearningenglish

You're right - there are a surprising number of similarities in the English and French languages. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised when we consider how close the UK is to France! Along with Ireland, you are our closest neighbours, so maybe it is inevitable that we share some language..?

@@bbclearningenglish It is a pleasure for me and not at all a reproach. I live in the Basque Country, thirty minutes from Spain, and I really wonder if English and French are not closer. When I started learning English, I thought it was very close to German. But, the more I learn it, the more I think it looks like French. I am very happy about that. I didn't know we were so close.

Hi Thanks Mr Dan and Ma'am Katherine as well. So we had three vocabulary Firstly, adapt ... last year when I got a new job,it took a short time to adapt with it. Secondly, gravely.... my dad talks gravely whenever he wants to explain his new decisions. Last but not least, pay off.... sure I moved from a country to another in order to search of such a good job and that paid me off because I finally got my favourite job. I'm on cloud nine because I understood what you have just explained, my greetings for all humans in BBC learning English channel.

Rich countries in fact are not really rich at all. But their political system rather transparent. With almost no financial corruption at all. And poor countries the other way are not really poor, most of them are actually have abundance of minerals resources. And geographically living without any natural disaster throughout the year.
