Malt Mountain

After exploring Sajama National Park and conquering Pico Austria and Pequeño Alpamayo in the Condoriri area, we set our sights on Illimani, the highest peak in the Cordillera Real and the second-highest mountain in Bolivia. Our journey began in the picturesque village of Pinaya, which we reached after a four-hour drive from La Paz. From there, we made our way to the base camp, where we enjoyed sweeping views of the Altiplano and a breathtaking sunset. The following day, our path led us through rugged terrain to the high camp known as "Nido de los Condores" (Nest of the Condors). In the evening, we could see as far as Sajama, and at night, the lights of La Paz sparkled in the distance. In the middle of the night, our ascent of the glacier began. As we reached the summit ridge, dawn broke, allowing us to witness a spectacular sunrise over the Amazon Basin at the top. Moreover, we were rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, including the majestic Huayna Potosi.

*¡Salud!.

Thanks for sharing! How much preparation and experience in climbing is it needed to attempt this mountain ?
@maltmountain
@maltmountain 7 ай бұрын
The way up to the summit is mostly steep but not very technical. Midway up, there's a section with larger crevasses, which was a bit more technical (as shown in the video). However, it was manageable as it consisted of only small passages. Of course, this area varies each season.

@@maltmountain Makes sense. I would like to eventually tackle this mountain. I'm fit but have no climbing experience. Should I attempt mountains like Huayna Potosi first, or what do you recommend in order to get prepared for such a climb ?
@maltmountain
@maltmountain 7 ай бұрын
@@samk6170 how long will you stay in the area of La Paz? First of all a proper acclimatization is most important. I would recommend an acclimatization hike to the Pico Austria (maybe one night at the Refugio Condoriri). With no climbing experience it definitely could make sense to climb Huayna Potosi first. Even if you are very fit, the body can react differently to altitude. That's why I would recommend starting with a less challenging mountain.
