In our August 2013 issue, editor-at-large Dougald MacDonald wrote an in-depth report on the current state of helmet use and design. To compliment this must-read piece, we decided to drop a bunch of things on our boss's head to illustrate lightheartedly what certain impacts can do to a climbing helmet.

when you hear someone say rock, never look up. Unless you're climbing at tillbury where people regularly knock down people sized boulders. In which case def look up and dodge cause no helmet in the world will save you then.

Love this but helmets aren't usually designed to take a repeated beating like that. They're designed to spread the force out around a wide surface area. It's probably be more accurate if y'all dropped the 19 lb on a second helmet that hadn't had the previous stuff dropped on it. But that's not to say you can't have multiple things drop on you in one go so y'all do y'all😁

Just doing some basic math here where d=VoT+gT2/2. An object falling from 11 feet at 1g would reach the ground going a speed of 8.1m/s. Add those to k=(1/2)mv^2. Velocity is squared increasing it has a larger effect on kinetic energy than mass. This yeilds 2827.22 as a relative measurement for kinetic energy of a 19 rock falling from 11 feet. The 11 pound rock from 6 feet will have just 898.02 using the same scale. So the 11 foot drop is over 3 times more dangerous than the official test.

Yes helmets are great preventing you head from being cracked open by SMALLER rocks and even though these helmets will save your skull from larger falling rocks, it still doesn't matter. Getting hit on the head from a falling 10lb rock will still F you up. You will suffer from severe spinal compression in the neck or might even end up with a broken neck if the rock hits hard enough while deflecting off your helmet. Helmets are great, but not being hit is even better. Stay vigilant climbers.

Exactly. I bought a climbing helmet to minimize risk. But I still maintain the same level of seriousness, awareness, and critical thinking to ensure my safety at all times. Preventing as much exposure to danger as possible and you’ll live a long climbing life. It only takes one mistake to die

Are they trying to say that these helmets are weak? Because that's what it looks like to me

Actually I think that most helmets are badly designed. In order to save weight they don't protect back of your head. I had an accident when a rock (a little bigger than an apple) hit me on the occiput. Luckily it hit me in the place where the helmet was still protecting my head. Had it been three centimeters lower I wouldn't be writing this today.

It's true. Climbing helmets need to evolve. I actually use a skate/bike helmet.

Which is borderline stupid, because they're not designed (or rated) to take impacts from falling objects.

The helmet used in this test is a pile of poo anyways. A helmet with a suspension inside works a hell of a lot better. But, Lightweight is all the rage these days. Shave a couple of ounces and maybe, just maybe you'll send your mega proj, dude!
