Jack, just wanted to express my gratitude for your video's that have taken me for a trip down memory lane. I drove twenty five years ago, (for about seven years) put myself through school and went on to a white collar career. Now at 55 years old after being downsized twice in four years, I am re-qualifying for my CDL to go back on the road. I found your video's to be very informative as to what changes have occurred in the industry and what has stayed the same. Watching your video's brought some stunning realizations of what had changed. I am still having a hard time believing most trucks are automatic where 10 and 13 speeds were the norm. I remember TA's and 76's to be the shining star's of truck stops and used to love the restaurants and the food they served, where now it's mostly fast food chains. I was always a driver that recognized that trucking is a game of consistency and not speed. I always maintained at the speed limit or a little under and was always truthful on my log book (not much of a gypsy) recognizing that burning out for short term gains was never a good long term strategy. I was very happy to see the electronic logs and the capacity that they have. The trip planning capacity with modern GPS is quite extraordinary where I spent my trip planning time with a RMCN atlas and written directions. I think the thing that floored me was the lack of driving proficiency that gets exhibited far too often. In my day everyone made fun of JB Hunt, you would hear on the CB... JB..JB... dont hit that thing! LOL. That was nothing like what apparently has been replaced by Swift. Took a couple lessons now and you know what they say is true it's just like riding a bike and after a couple hours I was going through the gears and putting trailers in tight spaces just as in my youth. Thank you again Jack, your video's have been a real part of my transition back. :-)

Met me a Oscar Mayer Weenr mobile today and thought of this video I watched a couple days ago. had you gone about another hundred yards past the truckstop, there is Shan's Chinese Buffet on the left. Plenty of truck parking and they do have good food at a reasonable price. try it next time, you won't be disappointed. this was not a paid announcement. retired ol ron.

Looks like a beautiful day and decent roads. It's always great to ease it down the road on days like that.

On that automatic Volvo there is a small lever on the steering column next to the windshield wiper lever. If you pull all the way down it enters into 3rd stage of jake. If you pull it down further l the lever will snap back and the Jake gets real aggressive. It will slow you on a downhill with a heavy load. You will then hear the engine sound.

I didn’t think I’d like the i shift, but I love it. The jakes took some getting used to. In rolling hills, I keep it in eco roll. When in traffic and eastern mountains/ hills, I keep it in stage 2; when I let off the fuel it comes on but doesn’t typically downshift. In stage 3, if your rpms are low enough, it will immediately downshift. I’ve been out West with it, and was nervous for the first few times, but figured it out.

Once I was running north on Hwy 99 in Cal. and was passed by a wiener mobile. I couldn't stop myself from getting on the radio and saying " I can truly say I'm running with the big dogs ". The radio lit up and went wild. Too much fun.

I remember when there was a Union 76 where that Pilot is. Had nice folks and good food there. It was one of those places I'd stop into just to visit and say hello. Nowadays finding good food on the road is chore with all the big name brands going to fast food joints and such.

I often enjoy following you on Google's trucker map, so when you give roughly your location from start to finish, it is especially more fun for me. ………….. When I was in kindergarten, I can basically remember playing with my metal trucks which I still have today in my loft in my garage. As much as I loved trucks, you'd think I'd of grown up to be a trucker, but instead I followed in my Dad's footsteps and became a machinist eventually (with a bit of dad's help) owning my own 15 employee maintenance machine shop, but I at least had my own R model Mack 10 speed, flat bed diesel. We used to machine large rolls and the components that went into the winding machines that wound the coils, like you often see being transported on flat bed trailers. The plant we serviced rolled raw steel usually 20 or 30,000 lbs. coils. The machine would take a raw coil of steel and roll it out flat under tons of pressure and they'd run it back and forth, rolling it up at each end until it was the correct thickness and hardness. The constant rolling I spoke of gave the steel good properties, the correct hardness and flexibility based on the customers’ needs. When they were building a new ship in Philadelphia, we would get extra busy and I’d have to hire part time staff. I digress, So I used to go out on “break-downs” (24/7 we guaranteed service) and I would pick up the afflicted parts using my cool Mack flatbed truck with my logo painted on the door as some of the rolls were steel others were a hard rubber, but they would mess up 3 or 4 at a time and they were heavy. We did such a good job rebuilding the rolls and getting them straight again as well repairing the spindles where the bearings went bad and scored the journals up, that the Ohio plant would ship their rolls to the Malvern PA. plant on the shuttle rig (about 25 miles from me) and we would do their rollers too. Needless to say we were very competitive with our prices & they kept us busy. We also did a lot of fabrication of new parts which included welding and machining for other customers too. On the other side of the shop there were smaller high accuracy machines where we made parts to repair Pharmaceutical machines and replacement parts. I retired at the age of 57, amidst a bitter divorce and at the height of imported steel, so in my best interest, I liquidated the shop, and eventually moved onto that land to live. You can still see my sign via Google Maps. As long as my sign remains up they cannot take away my commercial status or change my property to residential which there is a lot of freedom owning commercial property and I think better property value. I turned the shop into a garage where I keep my cars and law equipment, and I also have a small wood shop (I like to build Dutch tables where everything is doweled, no nails). Also, even though I’m retired I still write programs as a sub-contractor for customers for their CNC machines for some of the shops in my area. With the extra earnings, I’m able to keep from dipping into my savings & investments. ............ Is a shame that guy in front of you at the fuel island in the orange shirt did not have more respect and pull up further or park somewhere else. The truck stops needs some better rules in my opinion. ...... I had to laugh when you were pulling that hill and you said "old red would be doing about 25 mph right now" lol compared to the truck you were driving doing 50 mph. …………… If I had to guess, I would say you are in the process of getting another truck. If you could, for example, buy say a 2 or 3 year old Peterbilt (low millage nicely equipped in nice shape) with a Paccar engine and get 1 mile per gallon better fuel millage that would just about make the payments on the Peterbilt in fuel savings alone compared to Old Red and the amount of miles you drive. Plus your repair costs would probably go down and reliability would increase as Old Red has seen her fair share of miles. Since you left me guessing I gave it my best shot, LoL….. Always nice riding with you Jack……….

Hi Jack,great Vlog as per usual. I expect that Truck has a VEB Volvo Engine Brake on it,if it's anything like the VEBs we have on the Volvo FHs in the UK their a great bit of kit. I drive a Scania with a standard exhaust brake,and it's useless! Keep on Truckin' buddy.

Behind the dinner in Mt. Eagle, has parking for about 30 trucks! I always park there! Just because most of the time it's less Hassel and you get a good walk to the truck stop and the dinner food is very good

That hill holder feature is great! I have it on my Subaru Outback. Somehow the computer detects the angle of the hill and then applies the parking brakes. So that the car does not roll backwards on a hill. Then soon as power is applied, the parking brakes release to let the car go. Your tractor air brakes probably work the same way.

Can you please do a tour of the truck? WoW she got up that grade pretty good with 42,000 lbs. Dont make me trademy W9 for a 780 VNL. There was a white 880 a few trucks down on your left that was real nice. For some reason they stopped making those big Clydesdales with the DD16 or ISX Cummins. Man that is a nice truck but hard to find those 880's. Your gonna have to take a reeeeal goodscrub down to get that Hussy Truck smell off of you because Ol'red will get a wiff of a new hen in the hen house and she wont crank up for you....lmao. I was just up that way at Jack Daniels picking up a load of hooch! Be safe Jack and watch out when you park in Union City, they're putting boots on trucks down there! Safe travels ✌

The "Hill Assist" is only designed to hold the truck on a hill long enough for the driver to transition his foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. If you use it to just hold the truck on a hill for extended periods, you will burn the clutch up. Then its truck down!

I haven't been in St. Louis for 9 years. I see downtown is still under construction. Go figure. Ha Ha. I presume the Pilot at Mont Eagle is where the old Mont Eagle Truckstop was. It was a dive but I did like the cafe. The times I was there it was pretty much home cooking.

You don't have to hear the Jake brake to know it's working. You can feel the difference. I've been driving a Volvo for 5 years. I actually like that it's quite. That way I don't get a ticket for being too loud in small towns

Monteagle wasn't so bad my first times up there. It was going down eastbound on 24 that was nerving. After a while I just I took my going up and down at a safe speed.

Wondering if any old timers remember the Alameda Chevron truck stop in Los Angeles near Olympic? Or worse yet, the Arco at 7th and Alameda?

My Volvos have always held on the level and on inclines with no problems but the Mercedes - always had to use the brake.

Climbing Monteagle is easy; just keep downshifting until you can maintain RPMs in a gear. It’s descending that requires sharp attention to speed and RPMs to be safe and legal while not using the brakes excessively.

i always thought vans were too light and the walls flimsy and i couldn't make load locks too tight, fearing the walls would crack. didn't like straps, didn't seem to keep the load from moving. at least with a reefer the walls are thicker and the load locks kept the load from shifting. i eventually got use to the reefer in the cycle mode, never got use to the constant running though.
