In this video, I wanted to do 2 things.
1, I wanted to time myself on my first climb so I have a basepoint to measure improvements on as I get better at climbing in the future.
2, I wanted to show that everyone starts somewhere and that if you want to saddle hunt, to go ahead and get started! Don't be afraid to get out there and get started.
I started with the Phantom starter kit from Tethrd:
tethrdnation.com/product/phan...
I bought my sticks from Hawk Treestands:
shop.hawkhunting.com/4-pack-h...
I bought my amsteel daisy chain mods from:
doublesteps.com/product/1-8-a...

I used to always be in a hurry to get in and start hunting but the older I get I try to slow down be safe and observe what's going on around you more. After a year of using hawk sticks I climbed a hard barked maple and had a stick drop. Luckily I was practicing at my in laws and not 2 miles in where I was in archery season. I went back to the pull straps and feel much safer. Great video thanks for sharing

I’ve considered switching out to pull straps as well. I’ve also considered the camcleat method too. Safety is definitely the most important thing, without a doubt. If it takes you 20 min to safely climb, get there early enough to accomplish that. That’s how i see it, anyway

That was a good video & a nice platform to start with. A couple of years ago I bought some pants that u don't get burrs or nettles in. All the public land I hunt is loaded with it. They were the Kings Camo pants. The outside liner & inside liner has a pair of knee pads sewn into them. They r outstanding & the Desert Camo pattern works well in most conditions. I have a small waist & was able to find a pair for half price. If I am doing a cold weather & need an extra layer I usually add a pair of moleskin style pants to them & make them quieter. I have an custom made early season mesh saddle & a late season saddle for colder hunts here in MN which is the Aerohunter Kestrel Flex which is in the Predator camo. During the rut I'm wearing the mesh for longer sits. I was scouting a public area way back in late February. I found a set of 4 of those sticks that were identical to them on a 🌳. It was in a spot which was between 2 areas I hunt. The reason I never hunted there was cuz it's way too close to where deer bed. But with opposite winds I can hunt that area with 1 spot or the other. I returned to that area a month later & the sticks were gone. I knew I was @ the same 🌳 since I took a pic of it & sent it to a friend states away that uses sticks. 1 thing I do is climb with a rope system. I hope u r using a rope system to take down your sticks after a hunt in the dark. It's by far the best as far as being quiet & safe on your way down. I've been able to avoid deer coming down & I know how to get out so being Clean coming down is by far giving me more opportunities in the future. The thief that took those sticks was undoubtedly looking for antlers. Antler hunting is way down on my list of priorities. Getting spots setup when there's no bugs or hot weather is priority #1. The tether which was much higher than that top stick so I took that down with my rope climbing system. It looked like some package deal. It was too heavy, bright & the prusik was pretty much too heavy. It had a Hawk carabiner on it so when I watched your video I made the connection. Make sure u r staying safe out there. Hope your system has evolved with time to fine tune it in the off-season. P.S. I ride a bike & cart back 2 to 3 miles to hunt this public land. Only 1 access to it with a parking lot clear on the other side like I like it. I'm pretty sure the guy who left that equipment there took a shortcut from a park across from that area not too far away. There's water in that direction which was dried up last fall when i didn't hunt there all of last season due to a long summer drought. I'm sure he took the shortcut through a park where there is no hunting allowed. Hope your plots look great 👍.

I might have to check into those pants for all of the reasons you listed above! As for my getting down, as of right now, I've not settled on a rappel/rope system that I've wanted to commit to. So, I'm just being extra careful while climbing down. I've certainly seen the advantages of a rappel system, though. Honestly, that will probably be my next step/change. Hate to hear that about the public land and the theft.. I do not like a thief, at all. I actually might make a return to public land for a few hunts this season just to get some more meat in the freezer and not harm the population of the herd here at the house. That is the beauty of a saddle that you pack in and pack out (when you can) is that you limit your theft opportunities. You are also super flexible in which trees you can climb should you find that the wind shifted on you the evening or something. Plots are looking great and they appear to be feeding the deer, so that's a win/win. Stay safe out there and good luck!

@@lifeonthehilltn Yeah, I never went to that place even though it was close to 🏡 once in 2021. I showed up with a new plan for it & so far there hasn't been the problems that 2020 had. I've had a tough time even seeing a doe but several young bucks I've passed in different spots. The problem with MN is the opener on Nov 3rd @ the earliest for gun. Once that starts it's 6 straight weeks on public with a shotgun or muzzleloader. ➕️ it's all orange too which sucks for a bowhunter trying to stay hidden from hunters as well as deer. The double rope attached to get down is worth the spring scouting & preset work I put in. I go in clean with just my bow & backpack & I leave just as clean. The bike & cart means I can put everything on it that I brought with me & I get in quick even in tough terrain situations. Wasn't always that way. Take care & I hope u score.

You created a practical video from the rookie perspective; and IMHO this should help folks who may be on the fence about deciding to saddle hunt. Two points that I would suggest are: 1) For safety, back up your Ropeman 1 with a prusik fastened into your carabiner on the tether 2) For convenience, try a Nite Ize S-Biner size 6, on your 6:00 o’clock, to hang your platform. The S-Biner gives me reassurance that the platform will stay with me. Thanks for posting. Looking forward to more.

Great video, I'm in this boat this season and starting to prep, should have started earlier. I subscribed because your content delivery is great. You essentially have the exact products I purchased except my steps came with ratchet straps so not sure when they modified that. It's certainly an expensive purchase for us for not having tried it and believing the hype, but if you are a hunter who has used traditional methods you already know the benefits and it will simply be whether you enjoy the saddle and if you are comfortable for long periods. The big test will be if I can put the same hours in the tethrd as my treestands.

Hey thanks for that! One thing I haven’t added, but may at some point is knee pads. For the “sitting” portion of the saddle hunt your knees are generally against the tree. For some people, that may become uncomfortable and so knee pads can really help mitigate that. Once you get practice down and get more comfortable, I really do think a saddle has more advantages than traditional stand methods. Good luck out there! It’s pretty easy to practice out there after the season, too. You don’t have any leaves to worry about and no bugs or sweating lol

Killed zero out of my pre hung stands and old fashioned lock on stands this year, one last year. Biggest bow buck i ever shot showed up ten mins after i was in the tree. After coming out of the tree at night for the first time. You’re gonna wanna to repel vs climbing down. The Mad Rock safe guard is a devise I use. Again, there are mass videos on how too.

So are you suggesting a one stick climbing method? Otherwise my sticks would still be on the tree, right?
@michaelfrost2402

@@lifeonthehilltn Same method you demonstrated only adding 30 ft of a Dynamic rope ie (OpLux Tactical Rope) in combination with a descending device. Mad Rock. This set up can be duel proposed as your tether when in the saddle. I choose to use an independent tether and only attach the repel at the end of my hunt. I then Repel down and grab my sticks on the way. There are a few other items such as a pear link and a small retrieving line to help facilitate pulling the repel rope out of the tree once on the ground. YT videos are available. Sounds like allot but I find it much safer in the darkness of night having to get out of the tree vs fiddling with steps that may have kicked out or what ever else Murphy law throws at ya.

That’s a good point. I’m generally quite careful when climbing in or out but I definitely see what you mean about trying to eliminate as many threatening variables as possible

Climbers are definitely still a great option. I do think saddles are more versatile in being able to climb more tree shapes and sizes as well as I think the weight savings packing them in is an advantage. The biggest advantage, I think, is being able to maneuver around the whole tree. You’ve definitely got me beat in the comfort dept. Some of those climbers are like a lazy boy in the air lol!

Alright bud, go to genesis 3d printing and get the j hooks that go in your molle. Attach a little paracord loop around your sticks and hang them that way from your saddle. Much much easier and faster than the gear ties. Keep it up partner!

That is definitely a good idea. I like that thought process a lot. Those gear ties were just what first came to mind so that’s what I started out with.

The fact that there are so many videos, where people timing them selves climbing with saddles or treestands, fascinates me. Does everyone get to their tree 5 minutes before end of legal hunting light? I'm not bashing your video, it is well done and informative. I've saddle hunted for years and watching you go over the barrier to entry costs and the initial climb brought back lots of memories. I just don't understand the emphasis on the speed of climbing techniques. Safety and stealth should be top two concerns. Going slow, methodically and stealthy will outweigh 2 minute dart up a tree any day. Once again, not bashing you or your video, it may be the youtube algo that is messing with me, but I keep being fed these "timed climbing" videos on my screen.

Good point. So, for me personally, my goal is to do a return video before the start of the season after practicing and tweaking this summer and see how much time I’ve shaved. I can tell you the time aspect was important to me because I watched close to 100 videos of folks climbing and I knew I would not be that fast. Saw videos of folks doing a 20’ climb in less than half of the time. The purpose of mine was basically to try to help people realize that they can do it and also try to provide value on the costs of a reasonable setup out of the gate. Totally agree that safety and being quiet should be your number 1 goals. I’m excited to get in the saddle this upcoming hunting season!

Honestly it’s supposed to be about being mobile, I don’t want to 15 minutes to get in a tree when I might need to move an hour later or so, public land things change so fast. Where I hunt it’s nothing but pines so I have no need for a saddle but when you get to your spot and someone beat you, now youre running behind you wanna be in the tree quick. In my climber I can get 25 foot up in 5 minutes.
@lifeonthehilltn
@lifeonthehilltn 2 жыл бұрын
@@oSnDx Yea, I can agree with that as well. With practice, I should be able to shave quite a bit of time off of that climb time. I also really like the mobility aspect up in the tree.. Being able to cover 360* of the tree is something that I just haven't seen any other tree stand type allow other than a saddle. With you mostly having Pine trees around, you also have mostly straight trees to climb with, so yea definitely an advantage to a traditional climber stand.

Pretty much sounds like me almost exactly Bro! I just upgraded the ropes and went with Kong Ducks instead of lineman ropes... I did pretty much exactly what you did... Except I didn't order the versa links... I also got the Hawk sticks... I got the Predator XL platform... Jesus Mary and Joseph... We got our gear about the same time too! This is weird as shit!
@jassonbruce1185
@jassonbruce1185 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, also if you take that twist tie off your belt and attach it to the platform instead, then you can use it and attach it to your lineman rope when you get ready to place it... That holds it in place while you get the strap ready to place it. Once the strap is on then you can undo the twist tie and cam the platform down...
@lifeonthehilltn
@lifeonthehilltn 2 жыл бұрын
Hey that's a really good point! I hadn't thought about helping secure the platform in that manner. Setting it securely when it's off to the side a bit has been a bit of a challenge, so that would be a big help. I'm just practicing and practicing. Also working on how I'll be packing it all in as well!

Do yourself a favor, get some suspenders/straps to attach to the saddle, have the same saddle, Tethrd is great, the suspenders will hold up the saddle, allowing you even easier climbing the sticks. just my 2cents
