North Florida Peak is one of the New Mexico 2000 ft. Prominence Peaks, and is located southeast of the town of Deming. I believe it is considered to be the most technical peak of the New Mexico high prominence peaks, earning a class 4 rating from many people. My brother and I set out to conquer this peak after knowing about it for a long time.
Florida Peak, which is just to the south, is close in elevation to North Florida, but several people have measured the north peak to be a little higher.

Great video. Brought back many memories from my expedition to Florida Peak 10 years ago. The scree fields are insane there and unforgiving. Absolutely awesome views at the top though!

Hi Gary, thank you. I'm glad the video helps bring back memories. It was a fun climb, and there was a lot of loose rock. Yes, the views were nice, but I'm sure hazier now than they were 10 years ago.

I’ve been eyeballing the Floridas to explore via backpacking, but I don’t think this summit is in my future. That scramble scared me and I wasn’t even there! The scrambles on my attempt at Anthony’s Nose got my heart racing, I am definitely more hiker than climber! Thanks again for sharing, and hike safe out there.

Hi Chuco, I'm still trying to get over my fear of heights and falling, so the rope helped. Maybe someday I'll try it again without the rope. There's nothing quite close to this on Anthony's Nose. I don't remember feeling any fear there at all. The climbing just takes practice and experience. Hopefully you can make it to Anthony's Nose soon. You're welcome, and thanks.

@@ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer It’s always good to be safe, especially with heights involved! My friends and I will probably try the Nose again in October once it cools down. We tried a ridgeline approach in May from Tom Mays unit and it had some decent scrambles in there. We underestimated the hike and decided to turn around as the day got hotter and our water got lower.

@@ChucoHiker I saw your Anthony's Nose video. I don't know if it would be shorter to go up the east side. If you went up where my brother and I descended, it wouldn't be anything scary. I don't know if you could park somewhere directly east of that point, but it was basically the first saddle south of the peak and the canyon that went east from there. If you could park directly east of there that would probably be the shortest route.

Some of the opening shots reminded me of the Guads. But once you were up there, the mountains reminded me of Big Bend. Very cool mountain and route. Really enjoyed this video, Zach.

Hi Cameron, I really liked this peak a lot. Maybe my brother and I will do it again someday. It's neat how certain areas remind us of other places, and how the desert and mountains of the southwest have so many similarities, but also so many differences. I've though about BB and the Guads lately, but there's still just too much to do locally here. So I don't know when I'll be back. I know you haven't done any videos lately, so I hope you get the chance to make it out soon.

Great video. I think you really captured the scope of the crux. 4th class definitely looks right to me, but what do I know. I’m a weenie so I’ll probably rope up when I eventually get to this peak.

Hi Nate, hopefully it helps anyone who wants to do this peak. I guess it could be either 3rd or 4th class. I don't really remember the climb up too much. I need to take my time more going up, and just go up a little, then down a little, etc., and really get a feel for the climb. I see why people rappel, but also why others free climb down. It was a fun peak though.

Out here, they use the Spanish pronunciation of Floor-eed-as

Hi Michelle, I knew about that pronunciation. However, I was definitely not going to go through the whole hike saying Floreeda. It would've sounded horrible coming from me.

You should sign summit registers. It isn't for you, it is for the people who look at it in 20yrs from now. A younger me didn't understand that, an older me does. (You panned past my house in your summit shot!)

Hi Jim, I've signed a few here and there, but I don't really have much desire to. I guess you can see the peak from where you live then. It's a nice area, and I'll probably try to do some of the other peaks in southwestern NM in the future.

Great views. I haven’t made it to that range. I’m sure the technical part is more hazardous than it looks on screen! It always is. I think the CDT runs near there but I may be wrong.

Hi Piece Train, yes the views were pretty nice, but still a little hazy. You should try it some time, along with the Organ Needle. It does seem easier looking at it on video. I was thinking on some of the shots that I should've been able to get up there a lot easier. It's definitely different in person. The CDT is a little further west. It crosses I-10 in Lordsburg. It's beautiful country.

@@ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer too bad your brother didn’t make it to the top. But if he wasn’t feeling well he did very well making it to where he did. Looks like a remote area to camp and view stars.

@@piecetrain9767 I think Patrick wanted to get up without using gear, but didn't feel he could make it. I don't even really remember much of the up climb myself. That car at the beginning belonged to someone who was camping a little ways up the road. It would be a nice place to camp. There are actually a decent number of houses just a little ways to the north.

Hi, yes it's a pretty area. Florida state is definitely lacking mountains, and even hills. I'm not sure how these mountains got their name, but no matter what the reason, they are an awesome area.

Hi Charles, do you mean, " I think Ship Rock is New Mexico's most technical high prominence peak?" If that's what you mean, then Ship Rock may not be considered a "high prominence peak" since it doesn't have over 2000 ft. of prominence. Of course it's all subjective, but I was going by the standard of 2000 ft. of prominence, not 1000. Ship Rock has ~1581 ft. of prominence. NM has only 46 peaks with over 2000 ft. of prominence, and 209 with over 1000. Here in AZ, it's 73 and 428 or so. So 2000 ft. may be a better standard for high prominence. Thanks for watching!

Hi Sanborn, my wife is always worried. She hasn't seen the video, or the climbing clips yet, so she doesn't know that I said that. I never felt in that much danger, but it was a little nerve wracking. Maybe I'll be braver next time and do it without the gear.
