The weather looked amazing for the last weekend of March, so I decided to drive up to the Lake District in South West England for another adventure.
Scafell Pike is the tallest mountain in England, standing at a towering 978 metres above sea level. Every year, it attracts over one hundred thousand visitors who attempt to summit it's epic peak.
Whilst Scafell Pike is a fairly accessible mountain for intermediate walkers and hikers, it does have its complex sections that you need to watch out for. With paths blanketed in loose rocks, towering crags and steep slopes, this is certainly a climb to remember.
In August of 2021, I took on Scafell Pike as part of the national three peaks challenge (video on channel) but I started climbing it at 1am in the morning. If the pitch black darkness wasn't enough, the relentless rain and chilling wind made it a horrific climb that I'll never forget. Luckily, this climb was sunny and so clear that I could see the landscapes for as far as the eye can see.
I parked in the Wasdale Head car park and set off at 9.10am in the morning.

My daughter and I did it today on a glorious sunny day. In fact it was too hot at times. I have walked Snowden albeit the easier trails but Scafell was more challenging. I have a prosthetic hip and I set myself the challenge to walk all three of UK tallest peaks. The rewards are to be found all the way up.

Congratulations, that's excellent to hear. The challenge is what makes the rewards worth it. I agree that Scafell is harder than the easier trail at Snowdon.

Would you recommend this as the best route for first timers? I did the Snowdon Ranger path last week and loved it. I want to do Scafell Pike next year. Nice scenery is a must, I wouldn’t want to do a route that is not so interesting like the Snowdon Llanberis path. I would appreciate your recommendation. Thank you!

I didn't see any scrambling on this video. Is there any? If so how much? My shoulder isn't 100% percent at the moment, but I am fine walking. Ordinarily I'm happy to take on a scramble, just not at this moment of time. Views look incredible. Thanks for the upload.

Hi Dave, thanks for watching. There's no scrambling in the route via Wasdale Head. Technically, it's a very simple and 'beginner friendly' climb but it's still a very physically demanding long slog nevertheless. Of course, you'd still want to bring all of the mountain essentials like a compass, waterproof clothing, food, water etc to help you through the ascent and descent. I did this with my Dad and, at the time, he had very limited experience of mountains yet he was pretty comfortable with it, so this one should be fairly doable. Enjoy your climb when you get around to it!

A quick Google search should give you the routes as a GPX file to load up into your device. I'm sure physical maps are available but I'd recommend digital Enjoy the mountain!

Hey dude, the route is fairly simple and easy to navigate from Wasdale Head with daylight. I'd always recommend downloading the GPX file on your watch/phone to be safe, but there's usually lots of other people walking up and down the path so that will help too. Best of luck and enjoy!

Hi, well done firstly.... im driving from Chesterfield Derbyshire, in a few weeks time im 48 & im wanting to do the 3 peaks but not in 24 hours lol. Anyway how much is the carpark ?
@runningcafe1
@runningcafe1 Ай бұрын
Thank you. The car parks can be busy. Fortunately, there's lots of space at the Llanberris village for Snowdon and I've never struggled to find one. However, I'd recommend getting to Scafell Pike early just in case. Never struggled to find a space at the Ben Nevis visitor centre either. If you do them on weekdays, it's highly likely you'll have a better chance at getting a spot if you go a bit later in the day. Good luck

@@hiking_and_wild_camping There were definitely campervans parked overnight so I'm sure that's fine. I can't remember price wise, from memory I didn't pay but maybe I'm not remembering correctly. Perhaps have a look online.

Wasdale is a feat in it self to get to and leave . Not sure the drive is worth doing for the hike alone. Potential SUP around the area though swings it

About 1.75 - 2 hours going up and 1.5 hours coming down I reckon. Depends on weather massively though as heat or any other adverse conditions will slow you down. Got lucky on the day this was shot

Are there any cabs that take you near to the mountain from local hotels?
@runningcafe1
@runningcafe1 Жыл бұрын
I imagine you would be able to find a taxi firm that is willing to do this. Phone signal at Scafell was literally non existent for me so might be tricky to call the taxi to bring you back to your hotel. If you can, I’d recommend driving and parking so you are in control of when you go and leave.

You should be able to find a taxi yes - the pub at Wasdale Head car park has WiFi so you'd have to use that to call on the way back. Nearest train station is Oxenholme Lake District, that's still at a distance though!
