I've recently been covering the second year arb students practical day. I've been pretty insistent on them using a single line and lanyard approach, over the two lanyard (one open, one closed) way they have been shown. I use a choked alpine butterfly with a ring in the loop or revolver to mitigate rope to rope rubbing, paired with a rope wrench and hitch/ZZ. For the students, who mainly climb on a prussik, we've just been backing up with a munters for added friction. Since I've pushed them to use such a system, they've become much more confident with their movement and feel safer when cutting. I'll share this video with them, I'll sure the more advanced climber amongst them will appreciate the tekkers, so to speak.

Rhys, that's great about mechanicals, slack tending so easily! This technique is for slim trees, gaffing out on 15cm dia is quite different from a girth that allows the lanyard and forearm to catch. No worries though, to each their own !

great video, just a favor can you make a video where you explain how to tie with the carabiners the mainline to use it as a friction saver the same rope. I see you pass the line true the hole, but I can't see how to tie to the Runer.

Could you tell me how you tie'd the rope that serves as an anchor. It seems very simple, does it have a name. I don't want to be insecure if I used something like that. Can you also use something else to anchor to your harness, if you do not have that blue machine.

Richard Beek Hi Richard, I used a running bowline and then a karabiner cinching anchor. You can read about it here...www.works-odsk.jp/original62.html. The blue device is called a Rope Runner, there are many more belay devices available.

I like that system when you are chunking the spar, what do you think of tying on a rated ring on the end of a clime line? I have spliced eye's on all my climbing ropes so I would need to tie a double fisherman's knot or a double overhand knot to cinch the ring, then continue to setup like you did? What's your thoughts?

Hello Of course, tying on is fine, Poachers or Anchor hitch would be good. I don’t use this anchor anymore. RingnRings are the best, knot block a FimblClimb, simple, keeps the rope clean and you have consistent friction for retrieve.

Knots are fine, no problem at all.

if you fall into your lanyard it should catch you. not my video but here is a demonstration. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aa1_ZZVmzN6sfmQ.html also, if you connect your rope runner to your chest harness it will self tend so if you so slip you don't fall to where you last tended slack

Hi, clever system but i thing i am currious about. if you accidentely cut your self with a saw or chainsaw. and you are not able to rescue yourself caus you need to stopp the blood gushing out, how is some able to decend you? if you would have a base anker on the bottom of the three this would be saver i gues but would your retrievable anker in the topp still work i would wonder?? caus that future is really handy how you do that. do you have got some advice for that?? thanks

It is possible to rig such a system but is complex and time consuming. we try to abate as much risk as possible before and while working, this means that our rescue protocol is one of proaction and not reaction.
