Train to Summit

Train to Summit

9 ай бұрын

Starting a climb knowing it will take 17 hrs is no easy task, especially when it's up the 2nd highest mountain in the Alps, Dufourspitze - the highest peak on Monte Rosa.
We started from Zermatt, one of those places that should be at the top of your 'must visit' list in Switzerland, by taking a train some 1,000 meters up.
Our objective for the first day was what I consider to be one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done in my life, a hike to the Monte Rosa hut.
This was the first time we had to cross a glacier BEFORE getting to our hut.
If you ask me, coming here for the hut alone would be worth the journey.
We started our ascent up Monte Rosa at 2AM and hiked through snow and ice for 6-7 hrs before we made it to the summit of Dufourspitze - a steep and airy summit, and one that wouldn't be forgiving if you slip.
By the time we made it to the train station on the return, it had been almost 17 hours. Funnily enough, similar to my ascent of Mont Blanc.
Our bodies were wrecked, but our spirits were at an all-time high.

This brings back so many memories from soloing it in the early 90's. There was more snow when I did it, and i glissaded down some of those long, smooth slopes. When I was lying in the sun resting at the bottom of a glissade, Air Zermatt came flying over for a body-check, then off again when I waved happily. Great video. And yes, the top is sketchy. Great video.

awesome filming! great adventures! good news: you have to come back to switzerland again to climb the ACTUALLY HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN SWITZERLAND! 😍 this is the "Dom". dufourspitze (the monte rosa massif) is partly in italy and therefore doesn't qualify as the highest mountain in switzerland...*nobodalovesmartasses* (this time it's for a good purpose - bringing you back) 😘

Hey, what is currently your go-to boot on approach or easy trails without bolder fields? Tried to look through your vid's but couldn't find one talking about it.
@TraintoSummit
@TraintoSummit 9 ай бұрын
Hi. For hiking I use Scarpa Men's Mistral GTX, it's comfortable and stable but the sole of the boot isn't as grippy as I'd like it to be. On the approach to the mountain huts I usually use regular running/walking shoes, like Nikeys, however for the last 3 Alpine trips we had I chose to go in my B2 boots (Scarpa Ribelle Lite) so I don't carry the weight of the boots on my back. I climbed in both Scarpa & La Sportiva before and I prefer Scarpa's. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

@@TraintoSummit Hey, thanks so much for explaining it in so much detail! I am currently in need of new boots for shoulder seasons and summer alpine hiking (maybe mild winter hiking too) and am not quite sure if B2's are really necessary or something between B1 and B2's. Congratulations, I would respectfully suggest reviewing the ‘committed regardless of anything’ there’s no shame in turning back. You need to do more than try, check weather forecasts, what do guides recommend, avoid navigation errors, what was the strategy if cloud closed in for the next day? Avalanche precaution, shovels, probes, recovery. Good fortune isn’t always abounding in the mountains. Take Care
@TraintoSummit
@TraintoSummit 9 ай бұрын
I completely agree with you, and I think everyone should follow what you just said. What I mean with that statement is: When I climb, especially a big objective like Dufourspitze, I make it clear to my mind that no matter what happens, you have to get up there - because the way my mind works is that it will find excuses when the going gets tough to turn back. So there is no 'maybe I will make it'. Of course if the situation calls for it I'll go back, and I think everyone should. But it's just my psychological 'trick' to get the job done.
