Chameleons are absolutely incredible lizards. Perhaps none are more amazing than the Jackson's chameleon (Chamaeleo jacksonii, Trioceros jacksonii, or the googly-eyed mitten-handed tree-ceratops). Clint takes a closer look at these amazing lizards to help you determine if this is the best pet lizard for you.

Awesome video as always. I’ve had many snakes, but never considered lizards until watching your videos. Your enthusiasm is positively contagious. Now I want a stinkin’ rad lizard! Thank you for making the videos on the best pet reptiles. I hope more people take the time to do research on potential pets before buying them, especially exotics. Not every animal is right for every person. If I ever win the lottery, I’d love to build a greenhouse room with high humidity and keep chameleons in there. I’d have enough to pay someone to care for them when we travel, and could go hang out in the greenhouse with flowers and chameleons to look at. Given that we have to run a central humidifier to keep our house over 15% in the winter (even with that it’s only 35%), chameleons aren’t an option. I’m hoping to get an Australian blue tongue skink from one of the breeders when baby season comes around. Indonesians need high humidity that’s too difficult to maintain in our region. So thanks for making me want an awesome lizard, and renewing my lifelong enthusiasm for reptiles!

I absolutely love these videos. Recently we had a large reptile expo in my town, and I feel like you were one of the main motivators for me to go to it. Anyways, they had a guy who breeds Amazon Tree Boas there and it took a lot of willpower not to walk out of there right then and there with one. They were adorable, if a bit strike happy, and I love the idea of a more involved enclosure than what my wife’s Nelson’s milk snake has. Sadly I’ll have to rearrange my apartment before I can get anything since they seem like they need a bit of room, but I wanted to let you know that you are responsible for letting me fall into this wonderful rabbit hole.

I found it! A Clint video about Jacksons! These are hands down my fave chameleon and the only one I'd ever want (unless there are tiny blue chameleons that will hang out with you all day then I'd want that one, but out of chameleons that actually exist, this one). My parents had a pair in the 70s... they were told not to worry about them breeding because it was soooo hard to breed them in captivity, then of course the female had a bunch of babies that they couldn't find out how to care for and ended up having to go to a university to get fruit flies. They kept them in a spare room where the lil guys spent half the time on the big houseplant and the other half on the curtain rods. The male's name was Puff, like the magic dragon. XD

I used to have one I had named Sera, she was the best for the longest time despite bad breeding she had complications which is why I chose her, I wanted to give her a chance at life. But, she was happy all the time, green, no skin on her toes, she was gorgeous! But, as time progressed she had gotten worse and she gave her last breath in my arms. Hehe, I remember I buried her in an old Aliens Versus Predator box I had, she always reminded me of the Xenomorph with that tongue! Anyways, I had her for around three years and she was precious.

I had a pair of Yellow Crested Jacksons about 3 decades ago. They were always one of my favorites, and that species was about the only one available at the time. Fast forward to today. Just finishing setting up a new 4x4x2 habitat for a pair of Rainbow Jacksons. There is a divider preventing them from seeing each other. In the Rainbow species both the male and female have horns. This species really needs a lower temp setup with a thorough nightly misting, so cage requirements are on the complex side.

Automation really helps out with these guys, MistKing, get all your lights on timers (I prefer Wi-Fi plugs with dimmers for their basking to make for easy adjustments) and lots of natural plants. My Panthers really only require that I feed them daily, everything else is automated. I also have to water their plants...which I'm rather bad at so they may have a few dying plants in there lol.

Chameleons really are so freakin cool. I have a veiled and I love him. Yes they have very specific needs, but if you're committed you can do it. Once you get the setup and the routine down its really not bad at all. Definitely do lots of research and have their home all set up and perfected before you bring them home. Clint says fake plants can work, but its a huge risk. Jacksons are less prone to snacking on plants, but there is always a chance they might get the inclination to snack on some leaves. If that happens with a fake plant theres a great chance it will cost them their life. So real plants are the way to go. They also give them a more naturalistic environment and just look better overall.

Great video Clint! I loved this one because when I was very young, I used to be obsessed with dinosaurs! And my favorite was the Triceratops! So I rlly enjoyed this one! Keep up the great work

I have always been intrigued by Jackson's chameleons, but I saw a baby veiled chameleon at Petco, and felt bad for him. Almost been a year now and he is getting' huge!

I'd love to see you do a video on a Veiled or even an Oustalet's chameleon! When I had my veiled rescue years ago, along with regular misting, she also learned to drink from a hamster water bottle. Smart little one, she was.

Gotta agree with you there. The Jackson's chameleon actually does look like a miniature triceratops.

These are probably my favorite species of chameleon! Could you make a video on Dumeril's Boas? I feel like they're not nearly as popular as BCIs, but they are so gorgeous and seem to have pretty docile temperaments across the board
