The Damned United is in UK cinemas from March 27th 2009.
From the best-selling and critically acclaimed novel by David Peace, The Damned United is directed by Tom Hooper and stars Michael Sheen as the legendary, opinionated football manager Brian Clough, with Timothy Spall as his right hand man, only friend, and crutch Peter Taylor.
Set in 1960s and 1970s England, THE DAMNED UNITED tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Cloughs doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie (Colm Meaney), and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of Dons boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Cloughs belligerence and brilliance over 44 days. This is that story. The story of The Damned United. Jim Broadbent plays Sam Longson, Derby Chairman. THE DAMNED UNITED was filmed in locations throughout Yorkshire, Leeds, Derbyshire and Spain.

To those who may not know...Brian Clough is and was adored by both Nottingham Forest AND Derby County fans. That is massive, for two huge rivals to revere a man who crossed the divide is incredible. Here at Sheffield United we have the same with Derek Dooley, loved by us and 'them' in the North of the city. Not many can cross the divide and be loved by both.

Back in those days, the top English (and obviously Scottish) clubs were full of great Scottish players, and often managers too. Start with Busby, Shankly and Stein, and go down the list. Nowadays we're crap.
@Streetwalkeriain
@Streetwalkeriain 4 жыл бұрын
Why do you think that is? Could it be because football in those days allowed for more physicality and 'bullying' as he put it in the clip, especially down the centre of the pitch, which is what we're quite good at? Whereas in terms of athleticism, diet and conditioning we're not culturally accustomed to it and the game has become more about flair and tactic and sports science?
@johnnyoranges
@johnnyoranges 4 жыл бұрын
@@Streetwalkeriain So you think all those great coaches, players and teams were just 'physical bullies' ? Law, Baxter, Johnston, Dalglish, Cooper and so on had no skill and flair ? The stories you hear of Clough. I don’t think they could of got a better person then Sheen to portray him. As he has a flamboyants to him. But also has a kind energy to him. We know Clough for his wackiness and taking egos down a peg or 2. But he would also always build players confidence if they felt low. Obviously he was a tremendous manager. But the way he was as a person is more intriguing to me.

@@stuvvi Fuck off idot. anti-football my arse. You can find plenty of videos on here where Leeds are playing great football. Look at the one where they destroyed man utd 5-1 or Southampton 7-0. Just 2 examples. You probably won't though because you're anti Leeds and a hater.
