I'm not a clock expert by any means. If my tip works for you: AWESOME, that's why I made the video. I really appreciate all the positive comments :)

The quartz movement on my grandfather clock just stopped. Just short of ordering a new quartz movement, I followed your instructions and decided to clean it first. Well, to keep a long story short, I got some Q-tips out and soaked them in alcohol and proceeded to clean the battery compartment along with the metal positive and negative nodes. I popped a new battery back in and voila, it's now stronger than ever, ticking away full steam ahead. Suffice it to say, clean first and see what happens. Thank you for your very helpful vid!

Wow, you are really good! I have a sentimental clock that stopped working for few years and I am trying to see how I can repair it. Guess what? It's a battery placement problem!!! The negative side of the battery socket has a piece that sticks out so we try to put the negative side of the battery first. After watching your video, I push the left side piece in and place the battery from the positive side first. ... The clock is ticking now (after more than 3 years of sitting in silence). THANK YOU!

Big thanks. I have a 2 yo clock that the gearbox is virtually the same as yours. While this method is not working for me, it's bringing me in the right direction: Corrosion. I opened up the box and found that the place where the battery clips meet with the internal PCB is corroded. So I scraped off the corroded metal, cleaned with IPA, and boom, tick tok tick tok.

I am telling you, you're awesome for sharing this little tip. I sent my battery-operated Lindel tambour mantel clock to a professional clock repair shop. After 2 weeks I was told to come and get it and it was declared unfixable. Since this was a family "heirloom", I decided to search KZfaq for any help in replacing the quarts movement and happened upon your video by accident (or Divine Guidance!). I inserted a new battery as you showed and sure enough. The clock came to life! Thank you so much for sharing! 💖

If that does not work the problem may still be electrical contacts, but deeper in the clock. I just fixed 3 of this type of clock this week. IN EVERY CASE the problem was the pressure contacts between the battery connectors & the electronics board inside the movement. My clue to this was that fiddling with the battery contacts could make the clock run for a short time, but then it would stop again. First check the contacts to the battery itself. If the battery has leaked, you may need to use a little water on a cotton swab to dissolve the resultant deposit. GENTLY polish with some metal polish if needed, If they are badly corroded you may need a new mechanism, OR you can buy a separate 1-cell battery case & solder its leads directly to the electronics board of the disassembled mechanism, if that is all that is wrong; if you are capable of this level of fine soldering, you probably don't need any more instructions! Carefully remove the hands, remove the mechanism from the clock face (usually a nut on the face side, but may also be glued), & disassemble the mechanism - you need to be a somewhat good at dealing with small parts, & note carefully the location of all the gears - take photos as you go & use a magnifier to see what you are doing. There are a few videos around to show you how to do all this. Once you have the electronics board free, gently scrape the contacts (2 spring type from the battery, 2 flat on the PCB) with a plastic blade to remove the small amount of corrosion that has formed around them: the contacts should now look evenly bright). Re-assemble just the electronics board & battery connectors into the mechanism housing, place the motor armature in position (the gear & attached magnet that sit by the solenoid coil), and insert the battery. If the armature now "ticks" (& it did not before you cleaned the contacts), you likely have fixed the problem. Carefully re-assemble the mechanism, re-attach it to the face, & re-attach the hands, making sure that the hands will not foul on themselves or anything else as they rotate. Use a gentle blower on the mech to make sure that you have not introduced any dirt. If cleaning the contacts does not work (too corroded), then you can bodge the connections by soldering a ~30 gauge copper magnet wire to each contact on the PCB & wire-wrap the other end around their respective battery connectors. The connector bars on these clocks don't seem amenable to soldering, so tight wire-wrapping (so that the edge of the connector bar cuts slightly into the bared wire) is the only option, unless you are good at micro-riveting! Again, if you are that good at soldering you probably don't need more help! About 15 minutes work & no parts cost, & you keep the original hands & sound of your clock! Good luck!
