This is the kind of things schools should be teaching students by the end of high school. This was common knowledge 100 years ago. People " teach your children well" ... We owe it to our children to educate them on this stuff.

thanks for sharing. My father used almost this exact method and showed me how the roots grew on the stems to make clones like these. We did not know the words clones etc but that is what he made. I was about 13 at the time. Now I am 82 years old.

Hello from India. Thank you sir for sharing such valuable information. I was researching on various methods and sources to obtain more plants for my orchard, but buying them has become extremely expensive. Add transport and labor costs to that and it is simply too expensive for a small farmer like me. Once I discovered air layering, I shared this idea with fellow farmers (so they could also save money) who are more experienced than me, but they said I was stupid to think a new plant can be made out of an existing one. This video not only gave me the science behind the method, but also showed a way for me on how to expand my orchard with almost no cost. You have changed the way I will farm for the rest of life. Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart.

I have used many different methods and styles to air layer fig trees and always thought that they took so long to form roots. I tried your method just as you have shown and I am ecstatic with the results and to form roots in less then 1/2 the time of every other method. It actually took 4 weeks tops and the new trees were in their pots! Great job Sir Charles.

But I can't do everything myself, because there are not enough hours in the day, days in the year, years in one's life. If someone else I trust has the time and energy to do what I don't have the time, expertise, and energy to do, I am happy to reward them for the trade. We are helping and rewarding each other that way.

My father in law had the most colorful beautiful crotons. When husband and I bought our first house, dad came by with 20 potted plants. We were like no, you don't have to give us another expensive wedding gift. He smiled and told us he started those plants for us when we got married 4 yrs previously, Several Christmas palms in sets of 2, 3, and 4. Most special a dozen crotons all 2 ft tall or better and a rose bush taken from his mother's rose 40 yrs previously. Yes, air layering works. He used tin foil to wrap up a bit of dirt in sphagnum moss.

Excellent video. I particularly appreciated three things about it: (1) the concise summary of exactly what materials you need up front; (2) your use of simple, easy-to-obtain items whenever feasible (a plastic bottle; string; aluminium foil) rather than expensive, "professional-grade" materials; and (3) your clear and succinct explanation of the plant biology (auxins from the top; cytokinins from the bottom; and the logic behind cutting or scoring in particular places on the plant to encourage root development). I've known how to clone from small, bottom growth my whole life but it seems with this, and correct me if I'm wrong, it's a method for getting years, maybe decades of maturity in a clone. Considering bonsai has become my new obsession, this is precisely what I'm looking for.

Instead of using a razor blade to cut through the cambian layer, I achieved the same results by using a pipe cutting tool typically used to cut copper pipe. It has a single circular blade that when you tighten up around the branch, the blade sinks in to the depth that you desire. Simply rotate the tool around the branch. Open up the clamp slide it to the next position and repeat the process. You will have to make a vertical slit connecting both lines in order to remove the section of cambian. Easy cheesy🌳

Whe n I was a young lad I enjoyed being with my grandfather in his garden him being a keen gardener he used to visit other gardens in the area, me wanting to help him I would tag along too and sometimes I used to see these gardens doing air propagation just as in your video but me not even 10 years old had no idea what was fastened to the stems of plants in some gardens my grandad said to not touch them and to this day 50years or so later never saw it again and forgot all about them and until seeing this video about trees never knew so thank you as I'm still a keen gardener.

Rob. Today everyone is into air laying everywhere you see a mounded tree, in fact it's become a landscape epidemic. When suffocated root system is forced to grow copious amounts of adventitious roots throughout the added above ground mulch soil layer. But like drowning swimmers having no sense of direction, air roots incircle and strangle trunk.

So glad I happened upon this! For years I've been trying to find/purchase a Pinxter bush, a wild azalea native to the northern Appalachians (I'm in upstate New York.) I have a friend who has one in her garden, but we didn't want to risk trying to divide it. I was just talking with her last week about doing air layering -- if we could find out how! Yay! I'm ready to go!

If you seal the hole in the pot and make one on the side, about 2 inches from the floor, you make a small reservoir of water for the plant and keep the soil moist longer.

I wish I knew about this before my dad sold the family home when we moved out. My grandmother planted an orange tree that yielded the most delicious fruit I've ever tasted, that tree is still there and is about 30 years old. I'm willing to travel 2500 miles to go there and ask the new owner for a chance to air layer a branch.

Citrus are normally grafted to reduce disease issues. If you know the address make contact and look to get some scion wood posted to you for a graft of some variety. Give it a crack, a genuine family tree you could pass on for generations!

Awesome, ty, it took me sooo long to get my citrus to a good size from seed, and orange is the hardest. It is so wonderful to know I can do this! There are so many plants I have not been able to germinate from seed and wonderful to know this.

The wimpy plant test it only for IDIOTS who plant in so much perlite that it makes the soil dry out too fast. A good mixture of compost and SOIL is what this plant needs, not these inorganic materials. This plant should also have been planted in a pot twice that size.

Very educational & new to me. Going to the shop now to buy the kit and give it a go! I even read you can do this with cork oaks... interesting We recently moved from the UK to Portugal so a looot of the things you mentioned (also in the video "i'm doing everything right, yet my tree is dying") are incredibly useful to us. Not only very educational, but also enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work! ps: could be useful to post a list of what's needed (and what's absolutely needed - ie: is root hormone essential etc.)
