Ever wondered weather you can interchange drives between different brand and different specification PCs? Well. YES you can
In this video I cloned a HP desktop hard drive on to a Acer laptop and sure enough it booted without any problem.
Macrium reflect download:

Take a backup of your personal files and folders before you perform any sort of procedure in this video.. Hard drive cloning is a complicated process and if cloning fails you could loose all your data.
Make sure you follow every instruction STEP BY STEP missing any instruction can cause cloning to fail
Don't make dumb comments like "why the fuck you need 3 drives" "you don't need a external drive to do this" If you do so I will moderate, also many people don't own a desktop or even if they do many are not power users like us so keep that in mind thanks. Disclaimer: I have been cloning drives without any problem for the past few years without any issues with this exact same method, if in case if it fails its likely that you didn't follow step by step instructions or might be a case of bad cables or in very rare case hardware incompatibility. I wont be held responsible for the loss of your data since I have already asked you take a BACKUP of your personal files.

I literally spent a long time looking for this exact video. Many KZfaqrs here, but they just show how to copy from one hard drive to another, but than installed on a new PC, does NOT work. This method worked exactly. I got a spitting image on my desktop and laptop (just a few tweaks) and everything works great. Again, thank you so, so much.

Amazing. I tried to clone my disk using another product and althought it did clone it exactly, it didn't boot in the new laptop and just gave the blue error message screen. This method is 100% genuine and works. The only thing i have found is it doesn't keep the wireless details in but that's not an issue as you can export your old wireless profiles from the old machine and import them into the new one. If i knew where you lived i'd come round and buy you a drink. Thanks, top bloke.

I managed to get a working computer using this method. I started with a 2013 Dell Inspiron touchscreen AiO 23.8" Corei5 and imaged the hard drive with Reflect Free and then moved it to a new 2016 Dell Core i3 model with zero issues. Even the Win10 Registration remained intact. I was super pleased and relieved that it worked. So I can confirm that it works in that scenario. Well done with the tutorial, mate! I'd like to buy you a beer.

The only hiccup in the process was not realizing that I needed two partitions on the USB boot flash drive, one MBR FAT32, and the other NTFS, in that order. It wouldn’t be recognized by the PC until I made that change. All in all a very pleasant experience!

If you clone a dell computer to another dell computer, you don't need to activate windows. Not sure if other brand would work like that.

Just did this today and worked like a charm! However, I bought a new laptop, with Windows 11 loaded and I just followed his steps, using the newest version of Macrium software, still creating the USB boot drive and saving all the other data on an external hard drive, and was able to override the existing software on the laptop to be a dead clone of the desktop. THANK YOU!!!

Glad to see this method still works. One thing I'd love to know is, what about activation? Did you have to re-activate windows on your laptop after cloning or it activated by itself?

You can use driver pack online or HWINFO for the drivers of the laptop to be precise for the drivers and prevent BSOD. Nice video by the way. Thanks

Thanks so much for making this video! At 4:50 you mention using a Sony USB Flash Drive. I have a Western Digital WD Elements 4TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive, but it looks like I'd need both 1.) the External Hard Drive to hold the image of the Desktop, and 2.) a Flash Drive to hold the Macrium boot loader for the Laptop. Is this correct?

Tech Guy Charlie This was the best vid I've seen on this topic! Great job! But I'm confused??? If windows 10 doesn't work on the acer then you can't used the apps from your old pc correct? Because you don't have a operating system that works properly, correct? Which means you will still have to reinstall all of your apps again?? I'm trying to figure this out my computer is failing please respond so can know if it's worth doing this. Thanks!

Finally I can make it but the external hard disk must be kept on connecting with the PC as the OS is still in the external drive.

@@Vosgames Can you elaborate please. I converted an old HDD from a dead PC into a VHD for use in Virtual Box and after booting it's telling me to activate with a key. I did some research and people are saying it's due to the hardware change. Is there any way around this? There's a lot of people saying you "can't do this" but I suspect they're conflating "can't" with "not legally allowed".

I mirrored a hard drive from a laptop and it lists the same model name on the new desktop pc when I go to System>About. Now my custom built desktop PC is listed as an HP Envy notebook. If I click "Rename This PC", I can edit the model number itself, which I've done, but it still lists "HP Envy notebook" underneath it. I'd love to know how to change this.

Charlie I’ve used this video to do several clones but now I’m having an issue and no one can seem to figure out why it’s happening to me. When I go to “Fix Windows Boot Problems” it shows the installed windows on the SSD Windows 10 Pro 10.0 | D: \WINDOWS so after I select next there are no active partition to select. Nobody seems to know why though

My apologize If you already know this part. With your bootable flash drive inserted/ Power up/press 'F_' or function key to enter BIOS/find boot section/change the 1st boot device to USB/ turn off 'quick or fast boot' if it's switchable or see it in the bios/exit saving changes (F10 key on most computers is exit&save)/if your computer reboots after saving, let it finish booting then power it off at the password screen. Wait aminute or two/power up/ if asked on screen hit yes or hit any key to boot from USB drive only if asked on screen. Boom ! if the flash drive doesn't boot it's not bootable/ format it/burn bootable image file using software that creates bootable media/before you burn to flash drive check to make sure you applied any settings, if u find anything, for creating bootable media.

In the video, His was Macrium reflect 6. Did you use Macrium reflect 7 to do your windows 7,8, or 10? If yes can you message me the instructions on selections to pick after I open the program and select CREATE BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA.

Hi, so I was wondering if this can be done if all you have is the HDD of the original machine? I've already went ahead and tried but maybe my method was wrong. I don't have a second hard drive that I can clone it to, but I do have a working laptop with a lot of space so I used disk2vhd and cloned the HDD into a VHD file to work with VirtualBox. The only problem is when I tried to load into a Virtual Machine it would not boot, so I had to download an ISO and restore the OS to get it to work. The problem now is my programs don't boot correctly and I suspect it is because of the slight change in the OS (or maybe the drivers I'm unsure). I think the programs would work fine if the OS of the original HDD was cloned with the VHD, but I am unsure of how to accomplish this or if it is even possible with just the HDD. Would I need to do create a bootable rescue media using the HDD somehow?

Great Video - the best I have seen - but I am confused. Your title says "clone" and that is what I want to do. I need to clone my old laptop HD to my Desktop HD. When inside the cloning software, you chose "Image this Drive", not Clone this drive. Is that because you have other items on your external drive? I wanted to be able to put the Clone of my Laptop in it's own folder on my external HD. Not sure how to do that with the software. This doesn’t work like it should. The image of a desktop will not run on a laptop because thee systems hardware and software are not the same. Ok, so I will try it again and will be back.

This did not work. After everything, I get message, "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press Enter to Continue" and then my HP Laptop just shuts down. Tried online "fixes" to that particular error message, but to no avail. Also, I tried "Fix Boot Problem" again and there is a red X next to "Updating Partition Boot Sector". All others have the green Ok arrows. Not sure what that means, but this DID NOT FREAKIN' WORK Charlie! Ugh! AFTERMATH: I just re-installed the factory Windows 10 and it's back to bare bones "new" config. Oh well, too bad this didn't work from ACER desktop to HP laptop.

I have a brand new Acer Aspire 5 (7i 11th gen) with a 1T NVMe. When I go to restore image (as you have done) MR cannot see the NVMe drive, thus I cannot restore the image where I have to. any suggestions? I tried different things but Macrium Reflect cannot see the drive NVMe. Please help me.

What about all the old drivers from the desktop? Do you remove all of them on the laptop? You didn't go to device manager to see if there are any issues?

Thanks for this! :D I've been following the process and am at the stage where I have to boot my new PC from the boot recovery USB, and then get the image from my external drive onto my new PC's internal drive. Only problem is that my new PC can't detect my external drive (or the image file on it), but my older PC can detect it just fine. Any ideas why my new one can't detect it? Been trying to figure it out all day but it doesn't seem to work.

I followed your steps, did image of desktop to hp mini desktop After I restored the image to the mini desktop(NVME) I can't do the fix windows boot step.. it won't detect the mini desktop NVME anymore Anything I can do to fix it? I took the NVME off and used it as slave on other pc and it won't show when trying to fix windows boot I tried to boot and it says there's no boot device.. it shows the NVME in the BIOS

Can you use this method to clone a laptop to another? I have an ASUS laptop, the hinges cracked open and the power socket is loose, resulting in loss of power if the plug is moved. I also have a Dell laptop with a busted HDD. Rest of the hardware is functional. I know I can't just swap the HDDs. I can't buy a new laptop right now and I need one. Could it work?

You can, I have a test SSD which I use to troubleshoot systems and the same SSD works fine on different PCs, so yes you can. Although you will have to re-activate Windows and any other licensed software on the other laptop.

Old drivers get replaced automatically, I've done this countless times, had issues only once, which can usually be fixed by booting into safe mode and un-installing drivers causing problems, then your PC will start up normally and Windows will re-install proper drivers.

When on Macrium Reflect I click "fix windows boot problems", then "windows 10 pro", then "next", then "disk 1 windows (c)", then "next", then "finish" on "boot code options", then under "Running Tasks", I get a "X:" on "partition boot sector". When restarting PC, no bootable device found. Can you kindly clarify?
