The Alex/Zack situation is less confusing when you realize that by the time they unthaw the original body the first of the scans is gonna be aware of what happened as far as the trust is concerned and likely already asked the biological descendant's family to create a separate trust with a higher risk/higher reward ratio. The ex GF isn't likely to say no to the spooky computer ghost of her former lover. So ultimately Hal is likely the only one getting shafted. He's also the one whose creation is almost certain to be universally regarded as a crime, because they essentially merged two existing personalities without their consent for pure curiousity's sake. I think having a "backup" body that has your memories uploaded let's say every time you sleep into it and is woken up should you die and receives the information about what you did before you died could be one possibility a rather appealing one at that at least to me.

Very good episode. The "Adrift on a Sea of Stars" series uses several of the ideas you talked about. Such as, duplicating yourself so you can stay and explore nearby stars. Organic to digital to organic. Confusion when there are multiple copies coexisting.

The Alex/Zach situation is sort of like the plot of any show or movie involving time travel

The one main thing I feel Isaac doesn't take into account in the question of 'why not duplicate yourself at a major life decision?' is continuity of consciousness. I, Flodos, only experience life from the perspective of a single person. if a copy was made of me, even a perfect clone, I doubt I would magically see through two sets of eyes. As a result I'd have little incentive to clone myself to choose two spouses, jobs, holiday destinations or whatever would hold little value to me, as, even though there would be a 'me' experiencing both paths, *I* would not.

Oh this is the best Halloween treat. A superlative bonus SFIA episode. Oh that scenario you laid out was just confusing as hell. And you think of yourself a terrible story writer. Although that would make for a great table top role play experience. I need to read the Bobiverse series at some point. It is one on my list to get to.

I'd totally clone myself and raise them as my child. I was going to say that I'd want them to have a better life than me but I realized that I shouldn't think of them as me and I don't know if I want someone to have the same problems as me xP

A lot of the potential scenarios can be explored using Sims 4 Get to Work scientist career. Sim scientists can create a cloning machine which can be used to clone themselves, or other Sims in the same household, or random visitors.

I quite enjoy the idea of having several clones and copies of myself which were slightly different to me but still related to me, I would imagine I wouldn't much care or want a perfect make of me as that makes my existence irrelevant or less valued, but having close yet different versions of me gives them all some role or likely different preference to take our lives elsewhere.

The bobiverse is a great book and I'm glad you brought it up. Its a excellent view of what a flesh to computer transition and ethical dilemas that come about from it. It really is incredible writing, his next book wasn't great but the bobiverse series are really good books. I felt so sad for Homer though, didn't deserve that ending.

I like the perspective of taking one's consciousness and splitting it up into separate bodies instead of creating the problem of different lives, but I don't think it works that way. People's minds aren't able to handle multitasking, let alone multi-braining! I mean, Transcendence (the movie) showed about taking over one's brain, but it would be in this case our mentality forming its own physical body from sheer willpower - birthing itself from material. That would be ethical. I really appreciate you helping me see another perspective. That's why I watch these videos. The topics are thought up and it's great to hear an interpretation/rational explanation and play on the idea of ideas :)

One thing I've always wondered is if, were I to make an duplicate clone of myself (as I am now) particle by particle, would my consciousness be split into both. Cloning has always struck me as cool in sci-fi (like clone troopers in star wars), but somewhat disturbing when thinking about it in reality.

Thankyou always enjoy your presentations... I shall be tracking down and watching your other associated presentations on this subject as soon as I am able... I suppose it depends on whether a society considers a copy of a person to be of equal status to the original. To avoid the social, legal and moral issues you've covered and all of the other issues aside, it would be best if that society were to pursue and then perfect the technology that enables the actual entire transference of not just memories and expected behaviour patterns, but the actual singular consciousness from one source to another without leaving any trace whatsoever of that consciousness in the previous host. Leaving no trace because the original has quite literally and actually "left the building" and not by destroying the original in part or whole because and I belabour this point, there is nothing left to destroy. True transference and all that it implies. Merely linking copies is not enough. At best, the copying you describe is a pale substitute for what should be the "holy grail" in this particular pursuit. A clone is no longer the same as it's source. its experiences are different. it's perceptions are different, the conclusions it comes to might be simillar but not that same.. they are as soon as they become self aware of themselves and their reality, different. Were I cloned, I would regard the clone created as a different individual to myself. If I were a clone I would regard my source as a different induvidual to myself. If we were of a simillar mindset and nature then I am 99.9999999999999999999. ( and so on ) percent certain that we, my clones and I, would agree on this as well as a host of other issues.

I highly recommend the "We are Legion, We are Bob" Trilogy. My favorite Sci-Fi series...ever. Highly recommend the Audible version as the narrator is superb.

On the commercial uses of cloning, Polo teams in South America (where the sport is huge) have been cloning the best horses, including one team where they all ride clones of the same mare. This has been discussed in the US for horse racing, and there are interests who would be very interested in this (and preserved specimens from the all time greats, including sperm which is still being used to inseminate horses today) but the committee in charge of horse racing rules is very against it

I will henceforth refer to all cloning as "twigging" 😄
