After Hugo drunkenly ruins a wedding, he travels to a secluded cabin to dry out.
But his picture-perfect retreat isn’t quite perfect. The caretaker, Mila, is oddly nosy, the only thing in the fridge is vodka, and the rental instructions have one unsettling rule: “Always close and lock the patio door.”
After trying to call a friend to apologize for his bad behaviour, Hugo succumbs to temptation. He drinks, he smokes, he leaves the patio door open. Just as he catches his error, Hugo is confronted by an eerily demon on the patio threshold. Hugo and the demon struggle with the door-but will that be enough to keep the demon out?

Best moment: Hugo approaches the patio door and we see his reflection in the glass. As a podcast listener who thought I knew what was coming, that was a very clever fakeout. Somehow, the shot of Hugo’s bare feet on the patio generated more tension than if we’d seen his face. Great stuff!

OMG they did it. The reflection work on the patio door hinting the menace as he walks by it inside the cabin was phenomenal.

No. Not scary. But I 100% agree with all the feedback from the experts. It's actually an exceptionally filmed work and I truly feel like you all were really close to it being a seriously scary movie. More than anything I actually loved the whole theme of what the monster really represents. In my humble opinion, there were just little things here and there that you could have taken further or parts that just needed tweaks to sort of fill in gaps of what was going on. Seriously though. You all rock and you should be proud. Fantastic job for what seemed like a compressed process and for your first film.

I agree - honestly I think Maddy’s character was the creepiest, and I think they should have used her as “the monster.” The performances, production, and music was outstanding

This was pretty good. The shots were done well and good tension building. Specifically the hand grabbing the door. Just the whole framing of the scene and barely seeing the monster. Perfect example of less is more. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly scary but definitely creepy. I’m assuming the elongated screaming at the end was a nod to Mark’s movie/ cheese. I also can’t unsee Ryan looking like a younger John Lovitz. RIP Woody. By far the best actor in this short and he will be remembered.

You all did a great job! Really enjoyed it and it was great seeing the faces behind such a great podcast! My favorite scene was when Maddy was making the tea and walked behind Ryan for the disappear and reveal that she wasn’t there. Hoping for a next season! Maybe Let’s make a Western. 🤠

Great short! The one thing i didnt buy was Hugo just sitting down on the kitchen floor and fall asleep when there is someone trying to break in. If he had tripped somehow and hit his head then wakeup later would have made more sense. When you first conceived of the idea I remember you discussing the monster being himself since he is battling his drinking problem, and i was expecting something like night after night he locks the door just intime, until one night he drinks too much and it goes unshut, thats when he has failed himself again.

He's already opened the door for her while giving a half arsed invitation but she still asks if she can come in...like she's needing an official invite. That threw more red flags out than her being on the patio without access to stairs. It's not only vampires that need to be invited in.

I don't think y'all needed the blood! I did enjoy how it was shot, literally the screams at the end were the most unsettling part. It would be cool if there was a little more foley work to detail the carnage taking place off camera (ie.bones breaking, flesh tearing, even just final breaths) But overall I think this was a wonderful approach to making a horror short film. Especially given that y'all aren't that into the genre compared to sci fi and rom com. Congrats on finishing the project :)

Was it scary? … No. It wasn’t. Did I like it? Yes. I thought it was great! Best moments, the opening bits. distraught ryan, and ominous patio door. The cinematography and music and acting was all great. The suspense created around the patio door was fantastic, until the “monster” tried to open it. Then it fell flat for me. I think I wanted a hand to grab the handle outside, then a slow pan up to the monster, as ryan, shocked, registers what is even happening. Then, the panic sets in and fight for the door. The monsters hand being on the inside of the door during the fight just felt off. And the fight happened almost instantly, no time to really register fear/panic. Anyway. Otherwise, I thought it was great, and I love this podcast. Please make more… … shoutout to dave and SPY. :)

Absolutely LOVED this you guys!! The cinematography, acting, and sound design were AMAZING!! Having followed along the whole way and hearing about all the obstacles you encountered when it came to the look of the monster, I can't help but want to pitch an idea even though it is clearly wrapped and over and too late and also I don't know you guys. BUT STILL! I had an idea after hearing Maddy's line about black bears-- what if the monster appears to be a black bear at first (you could probably cheat it by having it be heavily shadowed and some sorta furry suit and post production magic) to give us a jump scare that's then deflated by "oh well they mentioned there are bears here" but then we see the bear (Mark) STAND UP! Now it's a scary monster guy and whole other jump scare! I feel like it could be eerie enough to just have it stand there in much the same way Mark already does (but maybe red glowy eyes?). Then Maddy's character makes sense as a shape shifter who transforms into a bear, and her line about "I poke around too" hits different.

It’s great to see where this podcast has ended up, actually making movies. I have loved every season but probably this one especially because I love the genre so. Now to answer the question you asked in the podcast: No, it’s not a very scary film. And I do think a whole lot can be done in the post production to make it better. I think that the main issue for me is that too much stuff has been cramped in to a too small film which makes the pacing a bit off. Like take the scene where Maddy is let in and then the reveal that she so to speak doesn’t exist. That scene goes by so quickly. There’s hasn’t really been the investment in her character as a viewer where you could be scared that she doesn’t actually exist. I also would like to say that there is way to much music. I mean SURE, music is what sells the horror, but when there is that unsettling music from the very start it feels like the genre is sort of jammed down your throat so to speak. Great horror actually disguises itself as another genre and then slams you with it.

I am terrified of even the tiniest bit of suspenseful music in a movie (the velociraptors in Jurassic Park left me jumpy for days) and the only horror I’ve ever seen is Get Out, so I’m maybe not the best judge, but I definitely found this scary! Maybe you’ve invented a new genre, horror for people who really are well-equipped for horror

I think the first half is totally scary, but it began to break down for me after he finds Woody on the porch. How DID Woody get onto the patio? Why does he take him outside the front door? Why does he leave the patio door open? It felt like the suspense and mix of music with real clips up until he finds Woody was NAILED. I am a scary-cat. I hate horror, and usually close my ears because I am so easily brought in by the audio. So great job Joe! I think there were just too many threads of plot details from that part on, though, which made it confusing, and then the tone changed to campy, which was so different from the beginning.

This is great guys, congrats on all your hard work and actually getting to make thing! I really loved the feedback at the end of the last podcast - the one suggested structural change would really elevate the fight against alcoholism (sub)text. He succeeds in fighting off the urge that is like a scary monster... but the next day fails to fight off the side of drink that is an insistent, happy, sexy distraction. That would definitely make it festival-worthy!

Yes- I was scared and it was mostly the sound effects creating suspense , and I loved the end... the shape-shifting possibility - It kept me thinking... was it the drinking that actually killed him?.... The blood was a bit campy - maybe not the dollar store blood another time...lol...yet that was still effective... not real blood but symbolic of death?...

It’s not what I would call a horror, but i think it’s scary enough that I would NOT want to watch a feature length film with this much tension (I am in the same camp as Maddy when it comes to horror films). I agree with one of the experts that if the scene with Hugo making a drink had just been placed a bit later, perhaps after the dog scare to calm his nerves, then it would have made that part a lot more obvious. But I think the acting was great, the sound was awesome (I loved the repeat of the tapping throughout) and I think it was really well made. I have thoroughly enjoyed every season of this podcast!

As others have said, not scary, but a bit unsettling. Ryan’s face is haunting - really, really great performance. The weird tonal shift at the end where it becomes a slasher didn’t work for me. I wonder if it would have been better to just cut immediately when the monster is revealed (a la Lights Out). Also, Maddy’s character was pretty creepy and would like to have seen more done with her.

That was fun to watch. I didn’t really find it scary and like someone else said, scary adjacent. I thought that the rocking chair left rocking had potential and if anyone had come up to the patio door then I would have been scared, but that tension didn’t lead to anything. I actually laughed out loud when the blood spattered. I just thought the ending was random.

Let’s be totally honest: “Is it scary?” is NOT a yes/no, 0/1, dit/dot question; neither are “Is it funny?” or “Is it delicious?” When it comes to mass entertainment, you guys know better than most that comedy (horror’s kissin’ cousin) will always depend on far more than just the mysterious alchemy of the audience’s mood and ability to understand/process/appreciate whatever’s being communicated at a given moment. There MUST be a willingness for each individual audience member to not only suspend disbelief when consuming such an odd entertainment as horror or comedy, but to be open to the possibility of enjoying it. All the Cool Kids dig it, so I’m willing to pinch my nose and give it a try. Same as when we ate our first shrimp or drank our first whisky. I submit, folks, the better question will always be: “Is the piece worth the time and effort to consume?” This clearly was. Congratulations! (Mind just ONE more note? We could be shown how much drinking was going on with only a few quick shots of the “gifted” olive jar’s contents being depleted bit-by-bit. Last interior shot could then be blood spattering the side of the open jar instead of the open glass door. BONUS POINTS for getting blood in the olive juice.) Cheers!

IS IT SCARY? The answer is YES, it is on the scary side of the continuum. Will it be highly scary to every person of every age & life background, in no matter what context they watch it? No. As someone who is not a horror film enthusiast but has probably watched an average number, and who is biased b/c I am a fan of you three, I found the final scene where Maddy disappears, then the doppellganger appears and then we hear the sounds of Hugo being presumably killed to be unexpected, engaging, effective, unsettling and yes, a little bit scary, like 3.75 out of 10 level, maybe.

That fake blood looks very 70s low budged slasher. Knowing that your self made fake blood was even worse, gives me new appreciation for how hard it must be to get that right. Other than that, I think this was a very good suspensfull little horror movie. I'm just not the best person to judge it. Somehow suspense and horror just don't work for my brain. I'm even bored during Alien. But as far as I can tell, from an objective viewpoint, this was certainly up there with the better ones.
