A grill fire that started on a rear porch extended to the home, completely engulfing it. 2 firefighters venting the roof barely escaped as flames suddenly burst through it.
It took over 2 hours to bring the fire under control.

It is SOP to vent the roof to get the heat and smoke out. The big issue here is the lack of water,i.e. no hydrants so the water had to be brought in by tankers, thus the aerial unit couldn't be used right away. Pumpers don't carry a lot of water and 2 - 1" 3/4 lines can drain a pumper within 2 minutes. Do the math. Once the tankers arrived and they put up the pools and dump their loads of water, only then the fire fighter can really go to work on the fire. Also living in the county fire depts are not just around the corners and oh did I mention no hydrants. That is the risk you take when living in the county.

Yes, but the vast majority of Fire departments are venting at the wrong time, and in fact, as in this case, making it worse. Ventilation prior to the application of sufficient water to transition the fire from vent limited to fuel limited has been shown to make the fire worse. This looks like a very tough fire, but the decision to vent when they did was a tactical mistake.

Horizontal ventilation is in most cases a much better and safer way to ventilate a structure. With that much of a visible fire load under that roof, there is absolutely no reason to be on that roof. On top of that, the fire was clearly self venting. Reading smoke is extremely important. That flash was obviously going to happen, it was just a matter of when. The problem with SOP's is no situation is ever the same. Throw them out the window and base you decisions on what you see.

I hope no one takes JB91710's comments any more than what they are, and that is a criticizing and classless rant, he was not there, didn't have any communication of the operation and only saw a very small part of it from a camera set back away from the fire. He didn't have any info pertaining to the operation such as fire conditions inside and around all four sides of the structure, water availability ( I noticed the portable tanks), level of training (and/or specialized training) of each of these brave men who were putting their lives on the line for someone they didn't even know while JB91710 watched it on a 5 inch phone or laptop. It would embarrass me for anyone in my crew to rant and rave about another departments operations without having any information or specifics. Thank you sparkywfd for the upload.

Some type of gas inferno. There was something in their supplying a gas as it burned different that consuming wood. There was no saving that house...just trying to keep the neighborhood from burning down.
@rfcomm2k
@rfcomm2k 4 жыл бұрын
It was superheated combustion gas that finally found a release which is why it looks like a gas line or something. My big question is WHY that aerial did not have a charged nozzle being used. Total amateurs here. That home COULD have been saved if they were putting water on it. But there were TWO aerials up before the incident, and NEITHER was squirting water. I hope the homeowner and insurance company sued the incompetent fire players. They CERTAINLY were not fire fighters.

Question more than a criticism - Get the guys off the roof, out of the house sooner, and then deliver water sooner right on the burning roof hole and hit the flames? Ladder? Snorkel? As it always seems with any emergency, at the end, the water shuttle gets caught up, there is a parade of tankers standing by to unload, but it is tough to get enough there on the initial response.

So the extremely aggressive smoke venting from the roof wasn’t an obvious enough sign that there was something going on in the attic space? All that unburnt fuel in the form of smoke just waiting for a big ol blast of fresh oxygen for it to ignite. These chiefs need their asses kicked for putting their guys in that kind of harms way. This is the second video if Uxbridge I’ve watched that was a gong show from a leadership perspective.

So many fire truck and manpower just to put a house and yet cant do it.. We can put it out with 10 men and 2 fire truck with constan supply of water.. Poor2 fire figthing teknik..

Sprinklers won't do any good on a deck fire that climbed the outside of the building and then entered the attic. Sprinklers have very little output and can only work on a fire they're above. Sprinklers exist in probably less than 1% of all single family homes, even that much. The risk of damage from a faulty sprinkler system is greater than that of fire and most insurance companies will not discount them being present due to the fact that water damage costs more yearly to reimburse than does fire (discounting natural disasters and areas with poor brush management-aka kalifornia)

Ok, I hate armchair chiefs, but this needs to be said. The fact that they vented that roof was unnecessary and extremely dangerous. The structure was already horizontally vented by the open windows, the fire had already vented itself as was visible on the c side roof. The smoke violently pushing from the whole they cut was a clear sign it was going to flash, at one point you see a white hat look up at it. After it happened it was clear that the entire attic was involved. With a visibly tremendous fire load above the heads of the firefighters on the second floor, they were clearly able to be seen pulling the ceiling without a line up there. Command could have clearly seen that from the yard. At one point you can see the orange glow through the hole they pulled in the ceiling. In my opinion, and its just that, an opinion, the evac call was WAY too late. That entire roof could have come down on those guys.

Venting a roof is only necessary when the fire or heated smoke and gases are in the attic. It does need to be removed. You can see that venting that out was a good thing based on the turbulent dense smoke coming from the hole. The issue is they stayed too long near the vent hole. Smoke like that is volatile, stay away from it, it is a flash risk.

I disagree. I also live in Massachusetts and the majority of departments require all career/full time firefighters to also be paramedics. Their existence and salary is justified taking the daily medical calls alone. Fires, compared to 30 years ago are a rarity, which is a good thing and speaks to the effectiveness fire prevention and education, of which the fire departments help to facilitate.

It boggles my mind how Braindead humans are. I'm talking about these fire players And the commenters. From the very beginning, you get to the second floor, open the ceiling just enough to see in the attic and PUT WATER ON WHAT'S BURNING! Not stand back and watch the place burn down and Definitely NOT cut holes in the roof to Help it burn better and then NOT put water in the attic. What the fire didn't destroy in the attic, the water destroyed. Especially on the lower floors where there was no fire at all. STUPID USA fire playing. Perform useless tactics just because they exist but do Nothing to save this house! The home owners and insurance company need to sue this town into bankruptcy.
