Close call on the Rio el Salto in Mexico with a kayaker getting vertically pinned at the reception of a small drop. The kind that often brings really bad accident. Luckily the paddler despite the water pressure manages to get out of it boat with no damages, but this could have been real bad. Luck is part of the process sometime, and that day it was with those guys.

Probably one of the quickest reactions to an accident I've ever seen. This is the gold standard for a quick and efficiently executed rescue! Shit man, I can't even imagine what the force of the water on the pinned guy's back felt like...

This was me! I am an amateur and didn’t even try to boof on this one. It felt like about 500lbs pushing on my back locking my knees out and pinning me to the top of the kayak. At first there was a tunnel of air around my face which allowed me to breath so tried to slide/climb out slowly. But when I couldn’t get a breath anymore I panicked so I squirmed and kicked which got me out but I injured my right knee and had some nasty bruises. The guys pulled my kayak out while I rested and prayed at the shore. I thank God and praise Jesus!

Had a friend get pined like that in WV on the Tygart. As he tried to wiggle out he got as far as his knees, flipped over and his knees folded backwards and he drowned. But, the other guides (including his brothers and sister) got to him, pulled him out and did CPR and he revived. He was sneaking Hard Tongue Falls far right, luckily as he was close enough to shore so they could grab him. And lucky that there was the railroad there too.

I worked as a raft guide like 25 ish years ago and I thought I had a good idea for a safety device for moments like this or foot entrapment. Something like a snorkel attachment for your vest that runs vertically down your back with a few small fins that catch the water. The other end has a mouth piece that attaches on the front of your vest. If you are foot entrapped, usually the water runs over your back pushing you forward. Then the water should catch the small fins and flip the snorkel up vertically over your head...hopefully out of the water to give you time to breath while they try to get you out. You dont have much time especially if you are panicking. If it saved somebody that would be incredible though.

Great reaction time. That stuff happens fast. I'm curious, what was your thoughts on a next move? I think I would've tried to jump in and catch the back of the boat and pull it downstream river right. If that didn't work, I would dig for a caribener and strap and try to hook up to stern loop, then go from there. I'd love to hear some thoughts from the more experienced guys on here. I'm always a bit worried about going straight for the dude, because if they haven't gotten out already I be worried they're stuck on something in the boat and it could waste a ton of time trying to figure that out, when cranking on the boat is usually pretty effective.

That looks horrifying! The worst every kayak wish to happen to him-to get pinched under a rock, tree etc.! I was just wondering if the kayaker was able to breed? It looks like he/she forms something like an umbrella and his face and mouth could occasionally be exposed to air. Does this theory make any sense in this situation?

As someone who knows nothing of the strategy or fine technique of white water rafting (and trying to learn a bit while stuck at home), what did that kayaker do differently or wrong that put him in that position as opposed to the others? It looked like he was on the same line.

The other paddlers did what's called a boof stroke, if you look at the paddler going over at 33s you'll see their bow staying up as they go over the drop, this let's them land flatter on the water and keep moving forwards. The paddler that got stuck let their boat fall with the water and you can see their bow going in vertically lettingtheir boat dive deeper in the water, also if they paddled faster as well then they mightve been fine cos then they would have landed further forwards and maybe miss whatever they got stuck on
