I tried to warn a you tuber about keeping redfoot tortoise outside with no heat. They live in Florida. I got laughed at in the comments. They said "they'll hibernate if they get too cold. They're reptiles!" So much for trying to help.

Glad everyone is ok. Its 40 degree in California Ventura Co. Snow on the mountains, I cannot take the cold. Glad stuff is going good, loved seeing Slinky and hoping for Buttercup to come home soon. I truly miss her.

I don't know if anyone's said anything about it yet, but the folks over at Snake Discovery were going to get some monkey tailed skinks for their zoo/education center....maybe you could contact them? They have some really awesome enrichment and a nice tall enclosure plus they do educational work in schools and such. They have a youtube, too....Snake Discovery.

Glad you found your skinks, they are pretty cool looking. Ive used a heater similar to the ones I use in my horses water trough, they worked great but...... when my electric bill showed up for the month I almost had a heart attack, over 900.00 bill due to having that on, its a huge power hog and I ended up going a different route. Hope you and all your animals and family are doing great.

They released a video on the weather channel about how the Iguanas fall out of trees from the cold all over the place, including yards, sidewalks, trees and just about anywhere you think. They mention that as the day heats up most of them will get up from slow warming from the sun. It was cool to see them talk about lizards like that in good ole Florida

I moves to Florida at the end of July and I love how much nature is here. I hope to have land in the next few years with my VA benefits. Not sure about how the wells work keeping water warm but nice. So much to learn. Would loove ponds on some land.

The fact that they were in the building is why they survived I’m sure it got cold but inside cold is one thing and outside cold is a whole nother thing especially when it’s windy! I’m super happy that there okay but this seems to be a eye opener that you may want to go around to all the heat shelter and make sure that all the latches are in good working order just to prevent any other escapes.

Always fun with the cold, our temps have been in the high 20’s and we have a horse that refuses to wear her blanket, and like today after much rain last night, we have a thick layer of fog, yes the weather has been fun. But last yr this time we had rain and snow. lol this yr rain and fog. Fun times.

You need to build a little hand forklift, that you can adjust the forks to the turtle/tortoise and then gently lift them so you can wheel them to their house when you need to 😉

Tbh I won't be surprised if future winters are on and off like this and this starts to become the norm. It might be worth building insulated, sheds inside your enclosures, they don't need to be massive. You could have the bottom of the doors about 3ft off the floor so you can open them and easily step over them when you're going inside and have a smaller door as the main access for the animals at a similar height which is accessed via a ramp. This way especially for the larger lizards they haven't got as much grip/leverage so they shouldn't be able to force their way out as they would be having to try and grip on the wall and would be in a vertical position, rather then just being able to secure themselves by gripping the floor. And during times like cold snaps you can lay the internal ramp down so they can't force themselves out of the smaller animal door You can also put a heater in them on a thermostat so if it drops below a temp you feel comfortable it will turn on. On top of this if you do a deep leaf litter area, like say at the back have 3-4ft of leaf litter for your larger species, this can act as a backup incase you're gone and the heating fails and you reach really low temps as they can burrow down in the leaf litter which will help insulate plus unlike dirt it's easy for you to rummage around in to find them. On top of this having the sheds inside the enclosures would also provide additional basking platforms if you have branches/ramps leading to the roof on the outside of the shed.

I have an indoor pond with 4 red sliders and a paint. As of recently I found one of my heaters stopped working and the water temp has been right at 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit. I was keeping it at 78 degrees. Is this much of a drop going to bother them? I have noticed they aren’t eating as many pellets but still kill the silverside minnows I feed them. I put 2 heaters for smaller aquariums in there hoping to create a slight warm spot for them but the overall surface temp is still 70 degrees.

Have you thought about som dwarf monitor species? A group of ackies or a green tree monitor would be awesome
