The Conformist is a masterpiece. The composition is outstanding. The color stunning. And that ending 10/10

There are reasons why the 70s are considered one of the best decades for film.

I saw this film and some of the others you mentioned when they first came out in the 60's/70's. They left a lasting impression on a then young would be film maker. I wish ABC/SBS/Netflix would run a festival of these amazing directors. Maybe you can it suggest to them. Thanks for showing it and your analysis. I knew I was watching something special. You've helped me understand why it was special. More please.

So glad to find this video, Bruce. I just watched The Conformist for the first time in 50 or so years. I've often listed it as my favorite Bertolucci film (and I like a lot of them), even though my memories of it were pretty vague compared to others I'd seen over the years (I have a special fondness for The Dreamers, even though I've never thought of it as his best). Anyway, I appreciate the insights in this video, as I return at last to the film.

It really is a fascinating experience, a tottaly immersive world of a unique atmosphere. Beside the hypnotizing visusals and mesmerising music, the bizzare characters and their deformed himanity make this film a stunning and impeccable, magical and yet perfectly coherent artistic vision. To fans of the film I reccommend reading Moravia's literary masterpiece.

I'm going to complain: it was too short. Another ten minutes easily - particularly with this one. Don't sell yourself short! Thank you.

I understand that some film making "rules" are broken here for artistic purposes. But there might be more people who might have experimented like this before? No? Cinema is 120 years old. This film is only 50 years old. There should be more people who might have tried this kind of film making before Bertolucci?

Yes, of course. I don't think this video claims that Bertolucci invented all these techniques. They certainly were used before.

Bertolucci's masterpiece. Esthetically beautiful but from a thematic and moral perspective it is devastating.
