CLOTH DIAPERS VS. DISPOSABLE DIAPERS PROS/CONS
In this video, I discuss my experience with cloth diapers vs disposables so far. My cloth diapers vs disposable diapers pros/cons have honestly surprised me. I knew I was excited to start cloth diapering as an affordable option for my daughter, but the actual difference in cloth diaper vs. disposable cost was way bigger than I thought. My overall startup cost was about $43, which is more or less the same price of a large box of diapers.
I use Kawaii Baby Cloth Diapers which have been fantastic. My favorite features are the fact that I can use whatever inserts I want with them, and the fact that they’re totally customizable in terms of size. I do find they’re a bit large for newborns, even at the smallest size, I would recommend using disposable diapers for the newborn phase, just to make things a bit easier on you as a homemaker.
Although some people get a bit squeamish about the idea of cleaning cloth diapers, I’ve never been bothered by it. In fact, I find it quite satisfying to clean the diapers and see them hanging out on the line.
Cloth diapers also can eat up more time - obviously it’s you’re going to spend more time on cloth diapers vs. disposables. However, I’ve found that living in an apartment, having to dispose of said disposable diapers actually is quite a hassle, and can take more time (and be yuckier) than dealing with cloth diapers.
I do prefer disposable diapers while out and about, and overnight. Although many people I know still stick with cloth diapers even during these times, for me, the cost of a few diapers a week when we spend the day out of the house on Sundays, and one overnight, is worth it.
Overall, I firmly believe that the pros far outweigh cloth diapers when it comes to cloth diapers vs disposable diapers pros/cons.
Let me know what you think about cloth diapers vs. disposables in the comments!
What questions do you have about cloth diapering?

EDIT: Some viewers have mentioned that flushing liners is a big no-no! I've switched to throwing out the liners in a garbage location outside, as I do with disposables. Everything else in my routine has stayed the same. Thank you!

Hello and welcome to Whole Homemaking! I'm Fallon, and at 28 I left my career in communications to become a homemaker. I realized quickly some of the challenges of being a single-income family in a time when inflation was at an all-time high, and I wanted to share my learning with other homemakers, and hopefully learn from them, too!
I give my whole self - mind, body, and soul - to my vocation, which inspired the name for this channel. I also cook a lot of whole foods, make as much of our food, clothes, and products from scratch as I can, and dabble in minimalism.
On my channel, you'll find simple recipes, tips, and reflections on the vocation of homemaking.

Hi, there are special diapers for night time, they’re fully made of cotton (and hemp, for more absorbency) then you just add a waterproof cover, and you’re done. You can also add boosters if you want, so you’ll get about 10h-12h without leaks. And don’t flush the liners, even when they’re biodegrable they won’t In water. If there’s no poop you can actually pu5 them on the washing machine and reuse a few times. 😊

Adrienne, thank you so much! I'm the oldest of 3 sisters, so I guess the big sister energy comes through 😅 I also checked out your profile - so so cool. I'm also an adult convert after spending several years following new age/modern practices. God is so good. Thank you for watching and I'll definitely make some more mama content, and a bone broth video. Bone broth soups are really really good for postpartum (and anytime).

Congratulations! Sorry for my late reply here. I have been using the homemade detergent more and more and I love it. This is the recipe I used, so simple - I got all the ingredients at my supermarket. I hope it helps! thefrugalgirls.com/2012/09/homemade-laundry-detergent-powder-big-savings.html

I agree with others for not flushing those disposable liners. I don’t use them cause my baby is 100% breast fed and it all comes out of the wash no stains. I also don’t use them cause I feel it goes against my whole point of not using any waste. I also use cloth wipes. Both cloth wipes and diapers save a metric butt ton of money. I also use the pocket cloth you use, but I use prefold angel-wing with a Snappi closure and bamboo pocket insert laid in the diaper cover. She’s gone 8 hrs no leaks. I find that way of diapering to have the least leaks cause you’re full cloth and then the shell/cover has the double gusset. I’m sure you’re past the point of needing any of that, but I found that to be the best longer timed diaper. I will also use two pocket inserts if she’s going longer than 2 hours for the pocket diapers. So far, it’s been a breeze dealing with it, and Esembly’s laundry/diaper detergent has worked.

Thanks a lot for the comments! Yes, being 100% breast fed makes things so much easier. I appreciate the tips, too, I'm expecting our next baby in November and want to keep cloth diapering, even younger!

Don’t flush your liners! After time they build up in the septic tank and cause major issues. 😖

Hello! Yes, of course. Here's the *disposable liners* : www.amazon.ca/KaWaii-Baby-Flusable-Biodegradable-Unscented/dp/B08B369CXL/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?crid=1JW1ETX9PJOR6&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.LAu7jU-DolFsDOdTqLdYrlR2BRV6z3ausfVA0CLGj6NVi3wR3Bru0rJUncSEgkmQAAAy1YjSNq3_1s7zS9aqT0f252hSL2ms91hD7L8_565UBCERhBlXmXiv6E-v8tKI_ev8UZz7T4SCWhqISlsMEibq28Kd4fDGuarVFiZEXyO-vvnSI_IIQOrXsiZ4GcqgK2FtpL8z0Q4U7bojcsOUB51kr32LJTjpTNbe5Z8G0AObtRgU3rNamHLJ9YMslPH8zcDDr7ZUf4QpQfAImq_JrHn_vRU-7lMxTr0HHornooM.i2Brz1c8EeZaHD1BpdlD0y7uWjCvjCrAyI-mA6b_9fE&dib_tag=se&keywords=cloth+diaper+liners&qid=1710544232&sprefix=cloth+diaper+liners%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-4-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1 Here's the *pocket diapers* , although, I recommend you check Facebook marketplace. We got a set of 12 of these same diapers (very gently used) for $25 CAD. www.amazon.ca/Start-Value-Pack-Double-layer-Waterproof/dp/B07YSB8P7K/ref=sr_1_9?crid=25EK5LVL3037C&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6K_GIIWsoSy2Ikj_YqKlqHA9l2MnfBkF1Y0GUkRzerzspqjdEaAmBI4P672AEDcS0mb4Zss-BFjQHDHZUBiFpN8kHsS7-MQQzfPaJq53ap3883h5XiucKj5Q5-mM_N-LghhmFpL1ArXqRbKd1nv3huhimtx4Wo3BErHgKlYB3TElFiPvN9kV4JqIFsyYW4xoaONVMikDB00DPN4hD2bR5V70ObMYbWtV4pHFCEACtbwXXZGoRoE4vhap-8x8bhEUKjXQyPJHpV662XQWk3xSzhC6K7MuktdL9xWzgH7S_yI._8qEGCDGVsJk_66VjziqPrAqf8T3HLkSy3fu5j7SyBE&dib_tag=se&keywords=kawaii+baby+cloth+diapers&qid=1710544358&sprefix=kawaii%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-9 We use a *few different types of inserts* , they came from here: www.greenmountaindiapers.com/collections/prefolds-and-flats. I found the best ones are the "flats" - aka just a big sheet of absorbent cotton. They're very economical, and during the first few months of our daughter's life when we didn't cloth diaper, we used them as burp rags and they were the best I've found. I hope that helps!! Thank you for watching!

Using toilet paper as a liner is genius. Especially when your baby is eating solids and has a predictable poop schedule, so you only need to add a liner once a day 😆
