I cloth diaper my daughter and things have changed so much from the Stone Age lol. It's not recommended to boil diapers because of the fumes that come out of the waterproof pul. It's actually considered dangerous and voids warranties on most all cloth diapers. It's also not recommend to let diapers is a bet bucket because it's a breading group for bacteria

That's because they're no longer 'proper' nappies / diapers. The original ones were terry towelling squares that you rinsed and then soaked overnight in either a special nappy powder and water or as I used to do, the Milton sterilising fluid that I'd used for that day's bottles. I'd rinse them out in the washing machine & then wash them on a boil wash with normal washing powder and fabric conditioner - no fumes, no problem - & I didn't live in the stone age. This was in the 80's and 90's!

There were no pampers when i was a kid either. I remember having to shake out my younger siblings soiled diapers in the toilet, squeezing out the excess water and putting them in the bucket of water with laundry soap to wash. My mom always hung them in the sun and those diapers were always snowy white too. There were pampers by the time my own kids came along, but I chose to cloth diaper because it was much cheaper and our budget was very tight.

Wet bag will hold in any smells. I just ordered a handheld bidet sprayer and will use cloth wipes to dry.

Well to be honest it started as a necessity. I had plenty of old flannel laying around, but when I used t-paper when out I realized I didn't feel clean. I'm hooked. Will never use t-paper again; at home that is. But I do keep it here for guests. :)

Aha! So if I were to use (as others have said) a dawn bottle, my clean up job would be easier because less mess! In case of multiple bottle loads required, just refill for each application!

MyCrazyFamily I would really be interested to hear if this family uses a bidet. If not, I would say leaving feces covered fabric for a week is really pushing health safety, particularly considering that as far as I know, no washers get to boiling temps necessary to kill the scariest pathogens. We cloth diaper, and use “family cloth” but diapers are washed daily or every other day at longest and babies are exclusively breastfed, not eating heavily pathogenic meats, dairy, etc that adults/ older children eat. As for the family cloth, we do fully wash before using it so it is literally for drying off + in the case of females it’s drying urine only (we have no “blood” in the family) and it is washed usually daily even though it is no dirtier than our bath towels.

@@searose6192 actually some washers do mine in particular has steam settings and a sanitizer cycle but i still wouldnt want to wash feces soaked clothes in it still because thats just raunchy to me..

I don't think its sanitary to wash with regular clothes. I would just use bleach and detergent and definitely wash separately. It probably doesn't cost as much. If you buy recycled TP theres no way that its 3 bucks to wash used cloths, plus the environmental implications are just as important

This is exactly the system I am planning to use for camping! A simple washcloth and a supply of water for soaking. In case of needing multiple cloths, one cloth per soak. The only thing I need to focus on is the cleaning because I may not have soap; I am thinking using a rock with water and hanging dry?

A wet bag would work too.

They also have cheap washcloths in a large pack at Wal-Mart in a few basic colors that will do the trick if you can't sew or just don't want to go to a lot of trouble that will work just fine.

This is definitely the "camping solution"; dawn bottle (multiple refills possible) & washcloth(s), where maybe only one washcloth required?

I don't think its quite so black and white. One person using a bidet can use as much water at the load it takes to wash 1 small load of laundry (I checked). If there were 4 people suing them then that would be 4 times as much water being used. Plus they use warm water too so there is the expense for that also. plus once a person has cleaned with the bidet they are left with a wet bottom. Then many use toilet paper to dry off. Now instead of toilet paper alone there is water and paper used, thats not greener. If a cloth is used to dry then you would still use a bunch of cloths just like we do. And there would be water to wash those as well in addition to the water the bidet wastes. Or if a cloth were reused to dry again and again then there is a used butt cloth hanging out in the bathroom. Hows that for company friendly?? especially if they accidentally used it like you said... Plus a bidet takes up a lot of space and costs WAY more to install. I don't think its a better choice and Im failing to see how its "by far greener."

I don't know where you found that, but it's wrong. A standard washer uses up to 40 gallons for a normal-sized load, and not dramatically less for a small load. HE washers cut this in about half. A bidet uses on the order of ounces or cups to wash you clean. I can't imagine spraying 40 gallons of water at your rear end, or filling your toilet bowl with anything approaching a gallon. This is just plain wrong. A great cost to washing electricity, especially if you are sanitizing. I nearly always cold water wash. And my hot water heater is kept low, right at comfortable showering temperature because I don't need to sterilize. Over the course of a year this is a huge savings (sanitizing settings on a washer use even more electricity to sanitize). Here's a great calculator showing how much money can be saved, by for, example, washing in cold water, or line drying: michaelbluejay.com/electricity/laundry.html As for paper, there is no requirement to wipe dry. But if you do, the amount used can be very small. Much smaller than when "wiping" to clean. Alternatively, there's drip-drying, or small dryer fans (which, obviously use a small amount of power). As for heating the bidet water, this is also not necessary. There are some devices that keep it warm, but they are low energy usage. And some people have no problem with it being cold. Also, it's nowhere near as much water, or kept as warm, as what would be used to do a load of laundry. There are also things like ambient warmers, which basically bring the water to room temperature (www.biffy.com/biffy-ambient-warmer.html#.UurvTvldWSo). Obviously, that's more cost. But when you start to sum up the relative costs and water usage, it's clear that bidets beat toilet paper. I'll grant that your method is better than toilet paper, but it's not clear to me that it's better than a bidet. And it does lack the benefits provided by a bidet, which include feeling more clean (which you do), comfort (hemorrhoid sufferers will rejoice), and, possibly most importantly, they are far more sanitary than any sort of wiping. For a very clean visit to the toilet (with no wiping), you could even skip handwashing. Even if you don't, say because you just feel icky being in a bathroom, you'll take comfort in knowing that far fewer of the surfaces in your bathroom have had harmful bacteria transmitted around them from all that wiping.

This is just plain wrong." seriously? are you assuming that she meant that ONE bidet usage would use as much as a laundry load? because i don't believe that's what she was saying at all. i believe the comparison is that in as many toilet uses as it takes to create an entire laundry load of cloth bum wipes, using a bidet will use that much water. the average person uses the toilet 6 times a day. times 4 family members, that's 24 toilet trips per day... 24 toilet trips, times 7 days is 168 toilet trips. average bidet water usage per use is 500 ml. that's two cups. let's redo some math then. that puts the water usage for a bidet at 24 gallons. modern top loading washing machines use around 35 gallons. modern HE washers use 15-25 depending on the load. so, you're looking at a tie, at best. (if you use paper or a cloth to dry off after using your bidet, then any advantage you may have had disappears completely.) if you'd rather use a bidet, that's great! they're awesome things. but don't try to shame people about using cloth wipes using crap numbers. pun intended.

100% cotton flannel is what you want; anything with man-made fibers will not be as absorbent.

Can't wait to start using my dawn bottle! Any ideas on the best kind of bottle to use? I am moving away from the "trigger spray" bottles because of their shape for packing for camping and their tendency to clog (bidet disabled).

North-n-South Homestead um....before toilet paper people used natural biodegradable things from nature: leaves, corn cobs (very common), corn husks, fluffy plant materials, papery bark and very commonly paper from leaflets, pamphlets flyers etc (going back hundreds of years). They did not commonly use fabric except for rarely fabric that was so threadbare it was no longer useable as rags and it would be burnt/ disposed of after use.

It works out to be cheaper and saves on the environment

klosnoski I would say it's probably pennies on the dollar compared to our recurring cost of $15 for Kirkland Costco tp of 30 rolls that we use in our house in 30 days. We used to only spend $30-$45 a year using 1&1/2 to 2 rolls a week but since my bf's brother moved in with us we use a roll a day we spend an extra $150 a year for tp because he is so wasteful.

If you don't have a bidet, keep TP for guests and poop. Use the flannel for pee. Each person using the flannel has their own color, Wash the flannels in with everyone's underwear and re-use.
