I am all about synthetic. A short sleeve and a long sleeve for backup. As for warmth, down if it’s not raining and synthetic if it is.

Yep, I've recently switched to more synthetic and have also found a great synthetic lightweight (but warm) jacket layer for when it's raining. But yep, I love down jacket when it's not. ;-)

Trying to get more mileage under my belt until I sort if level up. I found a new love in hiking and being outdoors. I will have to find a group as well here around sydney.

G'day Caro. Just starting out on the hiking endeavours and would like some advice on gaiters. Material types, length or any other opinions you may have re comfort etc. My main motive is snakes concern. They do my head in, and we have come across some near Marysville, Vic Mt Baw Baw and Bright district etc. I know leave em alone, but its the ones you can't see :) Cheers Peter
@LotsaFreshAir
@LotsaFreshAir 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Magnay Ah, such wisdom Peter! Yep those pesky little slippery jakes are the reason I wear gaiters. I don't care about scratches and the like, it's those two fanged scratches that I want protection from. There's 3 types of gaiters that I know of: 1) Generic Bushwalking 2) Snow Gaiters (more for mountaineers and xc skiing) and 3) rogainers gaiters. Rogainers ones are very fitted (like canvas thick socks to your knees) and aren't what you need. When I choose a 1) generic bushwalking gaiter, I simply go for something that is high towards my knee (1-2 inches below), a simple method of attaching them (I like a hook to put over the laces) and some kind of velcro and elastic to help hold them in place. Generally, I need to keep pulling them up/adjusting them a few times throughout the day when going through thick scrub. For the fabric, I go for midweight canvas as it has some breathability, as opposed to the plastic lined ones. I don't care about waterproofness, as I wear them in rivers, the rain, etc. Hope that helps!

+Lotsafreshair Thanks Caro for your comprehensive reply. Will take that on board. Enjoying your videos and the info you provide. Have the Larapinta Trail in my bucket list also after a video you posted. No leaches in NZ you say, (when you did on the Dart River, Queenstown region video) and no snakes. Combined with the best scenery I have ever encountered to date in such a small island (South) . Maybe a permanent move to NZ :) Cheers

Hi Sabine, What I've demonstrated here is completely fine for walking in NSW in the cold of winter and what I've used for many years around the Blue Mountains and in the Snowy Mountains. Once you're walking you'll get hot and remove layers as you start to sweat. If it's super cold at the start (like in early mornings before you get going), then simply add another base layer/merino/thermal. Hope that helps!

Of course you do! However, this is filmed in Australia... at 1000m (where I live), where 3 is usually sufficient, unless you head down to the alpine areas!

Don't buy merino products, google 'mulesing'. Down isn't needed either, plenty of synthetic alternatives.
@LotsaFreshAir
@LotsaFreshAir 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your plant-based friendly response. I understand there are many different opinions and passionate supporters that make up this world and I respect your opinion. Unfortunately, I've personally found synthetic alternatives a sad substitute to warmth when I've tried alternatives. However, I also believe that not all farmers use mulesing as a standard.
