Super strong day with +8 lifts ,don't ask me y i was under there, that's another story! So , after the big sucking started i noticed under me 2 sailplanes thermaling towards me (for extra enjoyment :D :D ) and immediately after that i lost visibility under me, (note that i was in pain from the frozen fingers i had due to not wearing proper gloves and when the sucking started i began to feel a bit not so much "Chuck Norris" any more :D :D ), so first thought was do a spiral now, but as u can see in the video the brake input was toooooo much Chuck Norris style haha , so i stall one side and when i realize what i did of course it was too late, then a spin came after that a twist and then the dance started, the lift was going on even if the wing wasn't flying,(if it wasn't the vertical lift i had , meaby the problem was the wrap i had in my hands, cause when i was fighting to solve it i was 100% there and even at some points my hands where up (with a wrap) the wing didn't want to fly). when the wing decides to fly i do a spiral (lift was also going) i went like some meter under the cloud but still cloud couldn't resist at me haha and continue sucking me , so the next spiral was the escape one, ( i was lucky with the sailplanes, either the timing was right and they left from the thermal or they saw me and gave me space, but at the exit they weren't there any more ). enjoy 😁

I've had this same experience when I was much greener on a high B wing. Sucked into a cloud at 10m/s to where it was raining and nasty. The turbulence was so incredible I couldn't keep a heading; the glider was literally getting ripped up and around to the strongest lift. B line stall only worked to slow my ascent, still going up at 1.5 m/s. Eventually I stalled and tailslide 3000ft out of that sucker, tucked my tail between my legs and landed out completely soaked. That was terrifying.

My first thermal flight in a HG...Dunlap, CA. Another intermediate pilot I knew with some thermalling experienceand I said I'll just follow you. And the vario was going crazy and I was ecstatic! Climbing like crazy and then he stopped circling and a made a straight line away so I followed...and realized we were 200' above cloudbase in this dome of clear air looking down the sides of this cloud. We went through some whispies on the edge and I thought it was so great! So I thermaled up and down this rock formation by the highway for 10 minutes and realized I was getting low...and looked at the LZ 2 miles away and thought Oh $hit! Arms in, head down...over the trees by ~10' and landed in the field adjacent. A memorable flight!!

Got sucked into a cumulonimbus back in 1989 in a hang glider took 20 mins of terror flying before I pulled max speed with the bottom bar back to my knees before I flew out the side of it , the resulting down going air was as powerful as the upgoing air inside the cloud I was forced down with such a force that me head struck the keel and if it hadn’t been for my helmet I think it could have killed me! That was the last time I flew in such conditions, after all I’ve only got so many pairs of underpants!!!

Before going into the cloud direct yourself towards the exit, check direction on compas, big ears, full speed. If it's a really big cloud your digital compas might not work so always have also an analog one.

Why would a digital compass (which still relies on the magnetic field of Earth) stop working? If the direction is based on GPS tracking, then perhaps GPS signal can be obstructed by the heavy clouds thus losing the direction, but the Earth's magnetic field should work the same on the digital as well as on the analog compasses.

I've heard after a glider gets wet it really contributes to stalling and other kinds of wing problems because of the weight of the water. The other thing I heard was in a place where the ceiling is 3,000 and you get sucked up into a growing cloud you have a chance to fly out the side. In the desert Southwest of the United States the ceiling is 10,000 ft and if you fly up into a cloud it is growing so fast you can't fly out the side.

I don't know why you fly with a wrap on your hands. On C glider you should never need to wrap it, with an exception of some aerobatics maybe. The stall was induced only by you, I would think that you lost orientation in the cloud. You also kept stalling it couple more times. You have to let it gain some speed, also the wrap didn't help. You don't need that much brakes to keep the wing in a stall. Also you shouldn't use spiral to escape sucking cloud you always end up in the the same thermal again, in an extreme case you will get tired or lose consciousness before you manage to loose any significant altitude. When you come close to the base of a cloud you should orient yourself on the closest edge of the cloud and keep that direction, you can add big ears and speed to that. If you lose site you should keep the direction with GPS or compas. If you don't have it keep yourself far away from clouds, you won't be able to keep the direction inside of a cloud without instruments.
@AlexRaflas
@AlexRaflas 2 жыл бұрын
agree in all that, my brakes are a bit longer cause im used to wraps, indeed i put it in the first spin and then i was trying to solved it. at this point wraps "didn't ring a bell" . the plan was to pass thru. but after i was in the temperature was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to cold to stay , like instantly deep freeze

I've asked this of another KZfaqr that posted a similar video. He said that when you pull a B-line stall that it takes so much effort that you are basically hanging by your arms to maintain the stall. Also, you might lose altitude of 8m/s with a b-line stall, and that's what Alex from the above video said he was in. A B-line stall might keep him from going up, but won't get him out of the situation. Plus his arms would get tired very quickly. That's what I learned.

If there was 3 or more other pilots around me trying to get down as well then id probably do a b stall as it would be easy to keep track of where the other (spiralling ) pilots are . The decent rate would be adequate and im not going to spiral into another pilot accidently . Sometimes we can become fixated under duress and forget to keep tabs of other pilots

Jesus Man, get your nose down - that was thermalling, not spiralling. Nose down will be 15-20m/s - you only need a proper deep spiral for 5-10 seconds and you're golden... The final one at 2:58 was actually a spiral, the earlier ones not, and it was slow as hell - and you stayed in it for only 2 turns... You can clearly see you have barely a 45 degree banking outside of the 2 proper spiral turns... If you need to get out the sky, do it properly... SIV time 🙂

Interesting how people can‘t judge weather beforehand and just fly under big clouds they can‘t handle. Then, doing nothing but pushing the speed bar. No ears, no spirals. As soon as they are finally in the clouds they panic and try small spirals. As soon as they see a little bit clearer again they nearly stop spiraling - just to get sucked up again. Get an A-wing, get an open harness and get back to training before doing xc in weather conditions you can‘t handle properly. Learn how to do big ears, learn how to spiral steep and learn how to judge weather, how to read clouds. Its no rocket science. But it is ridiculous to upload such behavior as a pilot with such smileys like it is a joke.

wow so basically , an induced spiral dive is the only way out of a cloud suck ? I dont think Big ears would have worked in this situation . ( I ask because I hang glide , about to start Paragliding in 3 month )

No, big ears makes it down +- 5m/s and he was being sucked at 10 m/s , so he would still go up at 5 m/s with big ears.

In looks like a very mild spiral 45 degrees to the horizon. A nose down spiral will give a better descent, but then your dealing with G force.

G's are ruthless in nose down spirals you can sink like a brick if you can hold your shaz together, they take practice and even then take big kahunas to do and hold!
