i think when players know Melee primarily as a competitive game, they think it's crazy that mango couldn't know what jump squat is, but I think people who played Melee a lot as a young kid probably identify with this (or at least I kind of do). when i first learned to wave dash, all I was told was that I needed to air dodge really quickly after jumping, so I just practiced the timing with the characters I enjoyed playing the most. my brain knew that the timings were different, but they all "felt like" wavedashing, so I never thought much more about it. Maybe 5 years after this, in a Kira Melee Tutorial, I learned more about what is actually going on in that timing, and why/how it varies for different characters. seeing as mango would never need to be watching Melee Tutorials in like 2015, it makes sense that he would never actually come across the definition of a jump squat, or, after hearing the term, care enough to find out what it means.

I definitely interpreted mang0 at the beginning as saying, “For the sake of the audience, let’s pretend I don’t know anything about this game. Explain the ‘nerd shit’ you’re talking to me about assuming as close to no prior knowledge at all.” Everyone else in these comments may be interpreting him correctly as sincere, but try re-watching the beginning with that interpretation instead because I think it makes the opening make a lot more sense.

the generational diff in the comments is cool. mango grew up without widespread melee knowledge and just got good by playing the new generation got good by learning about complex mechanics and training on how to do it. thats why its surprising to some that mango didn't know something. and thats what makes melee magical. one of the few games left in the world not abandoned for patch culture and esport sell outs.

Are you telling me that every time pros up smash, say with fox, they’re doing it out of jump squat? If so I’m guessing it’s because it just comes out faster than raw up smash?

If they are dashing, yes, it is fastest to cancel the dash with jump, cancel the jump by interrupting jumpsquat with upsmash. If it is easier for you, you can cancel dash with crouch, which is slower.

In reference to a jump canceled upsmash. You have more or less frames to cancel your jump with the upsmash. With less frames, its easier to jump and get and upair for being too slow

You'd think that, but the reality is Hbox used to start throwing out random pounds whenever he got impatient. Eventually at one of the smash summits he got punished so hard for it someone called him out on it & he stopped doing it, but even today when he plays he'll start doing very aggressive forward moving bairs or begin wavedashing/shielding looking for a grab techchase with puff. Tldr, his internal timer still runs out, he just shows it differently.
