Cloudview, I just saw this one for the first time and my reaction was very bizarre and I can't explain it because I have seen many of your Buddy presentations and I consider them all musical national treasures but this one blew me away so hard that at the end I started laughing and a tear came in my eye...I think that happened because I just witnessed someting so incredible that it doesn't seem real... He played this piece as if his life and the whole world was depending on him and he actually pulled it all off (as usual)! The energy, artistry, creativity and unparalleled execution that this man could bring to the drum kit I think has set the bar so high that we all will forever be trying in vain to reach! It's nice to still be inspired by someone as a 53 year old drummer and we all owe you a great debt of gratitude for sharing all these treasures with us! As always, much appreciation, Bob

You are very welcome. I love how you call these BR videos "musical national treasures." And I too have had the reaction you talk about. And for the same reason: the energy, artistry, creativity and unparalleled execution that set the bar so high!

I've had the exact same experience, multiple times. It's almost the emotional overload of witnessing something that is just not of this world.

Buddy had just lost his friend of 40 years and mentor Gene Krupa only 11 days previous to this tv session. (This was recorded for tv on Oct 27, 1973). "Those who can emote the most are the best - B.R."

That cymbal barrage starting at 5:45 is spectacular - and listen to what just his left hand is doing during that sequence. Ungodly.

The lead tpt is Charlie Davis, one in a line of great lead trumpet players on BR's band. I taught at CSU Long Beach in California from 1998-2004. Charlie had the office next to mine. When he gave a trumpet lesson....man could he get LOUD. Charlie is a great guy and still very active in S. California

I remember seeing this 1973 if I can rember sometime around Christmas time or just before the band was outstanding and as for Buddy I was glued to the screen the solo and the way he ended it the left hand and the way he played the cymbals around was stunning! Great to see this again.

I have learned so much from the way Buddy counts. 1_2_3_4_ = 16 bars., a beautiful and everlasting way to go.

You can hear a few louder particular individuals during the cheering applause. Those are the few who know that what they saw, may in fact be just as complicated and difficult as the SATURN V MISSION. That's true because once it starts, you'll never see it again no matter what happens in the end.

Does anyone know why the band folded perhaps in 1974 and reappear in I believe the spring of 1975?

In early 1974 Buddy disbanded primarily for financial reasons, and he started Buddy's Place (a club in Manhattan) with a sextet.

@cloudview747

I like it also, but my favorite tune from The Roar of 74 is Nutville, even more than Time Check (which B played right to the end).
@dylangatenby9928
@dylangatenby9928 5 жыл бұрын
@@cloudview747 Nutville is a great chart. Buddy played Time Check almost his whole career starting in the mid-seventies.
@nealbfinn
@nealbfinn 3 жыл бұрын
@@dylangatenby9928 While “Time Check” remained a regular in BRs library, both “Nuttville” and “Sideman” were pretty much phased out as the personnel turned over and new charts came in. Sometimes a chart would disappear and then return.

Does anyone know who's playing bass here? It's definitely not Tony Levin who played on the album (but was only with the band for two weeks, apparently). I don't think I've ever seen a jazz bassist use a pick before! Was he a guitarist filling in on bass for this gig?
@cloudview747
@cloudview747 5 жыл бұрын
Just checked the Buddy Rich discography written by Doug Meriwether. You are correct, it's not Tony Levin. It says the bass player here was Ron Paley.
@room34
@room34 5 жыл бұрын
@@cloudview747 Yep, that's him all right… I tracked down a picture of Ron Paley playing (with a pick, no less) with Buddy in the '70s and it's a match. Thanks! (Not disparaging the use of picks on bass… it's just not something I recall ever having seen in jazz before.)

from 5.50 on is just out of this world, shame we cant see his left hand, its sounds like he is playing semi quavers. Or most of them, btween his LH and BD. Pretty much impossible, plenty of one handed technique guys out there but I have not heard anything like this from them . Cherokee 1965 on YT has some fast (but interesting) one handed stuff... 50 years ago. Everyone has some catching up to do! Buddy did it first and it still sounds better than anything around now.

My Dad was the house drummer on the Parkinson show for a few years including this show. Buddy signed the ride cybal on his kit in this video and gave it to my Dad as a gift...he still has it to this day. Years later, they met backstage at Ronnie Scotts and my Dad said he still has the cymbal. Buddy's response..."Yeah..I've been meaning to ask for it back!" :-)
