Clow Reed and Yuko Ichihara: A Complete History

3 жыл бұрынHere, I present the entire known history of Clow Reed and Yuko Ichihara as of early 2021. This research (at the request of a viewer) spans the Cardcaptor Sakura, xxxHOLiC, Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, and Kobato. manga and anime, along with the Soel and Larg: The Adventures of Mokona-Modoki book and its sister xxxHOLiC Kei Drama CD. While obviously not every small detail of their lives is recounted (e.g., every transaction Yuko made with customers), their intersecting stories and impacts on others' lives are all laid out here.
Edit: I misspoke near the end; Watanuki stays in the shop over 115 years (not 150).
Extra information: Clow was also well-known throughout Ikai. Also, Yuko was heavy into pop-culture, favoring hits from both Japan and the US during the 1970s and 1980s, including Mito-Komon, Cat's Eye, City Hunter, and Romper Room; furthermore, she continued to enjoy pop-culture as she frequently read the Weekly Maganyan (parody of Weekly Shonen Jump) magazine. Yuko also knew the Subaru and Hokuto Sumeragi (from since they were kids) that inhabited her dimension.
Important note: If I cite an anime for information, it is less reliable as only the manga is official canon. Nonetheless, if the anime does not conflict with the manga, it may still be accurate. E.g., the entire encounter with Madoushi is non canon but could still have happened in Clow’s life as it does not conflict with the rest of his canon life, but Sakura Kinomoto's encounter with Madoushi is noncanon either way.
I apologize for some areas of the slides not syncing up with my dialogue and many images losing their HD quality, but I am cheap so Windows Movie Maker and its bugs have to do. But I think overall the presentation works pretty well.
Note: a relatively significant portion of this history is biased toward my personal theory of the CLAMP timelines, e.g., the clones taking Kinomoto and Li's places in the Rebirth timeline, but the evidence for this is strong if you wish to discuss in the comments below.

I just realized that spinnel sun and ruby moon have butterfly-like appearance. Eriol must still thinking of Yuko while created them.

Quite possibly yes. Those two represent an interesting mix when considering Eriol. He claims they complete him (almost has a double meaning then if they relate back to Yuko), but he has also moved on to a degree from Yuko (and his past life as Clow) as he is with Kaho now. But of course, his early years were still shaped by Clow's need to make the future good for Kinomoto, Li, the Clow Cards, and especially himself by splitting his magic, hence, the entirely new forms but with butterfly wings show an attachment to the past but a willingness to move on.

@@paradox54321 thank you! actually i do have a question, in terms of Watanuki was he meant to replace Tsubasa Li because of the time travel (hence he was pursued by evil spirits)? I remember they are tied somehow but I don’t know why or how

@@MinhAnh63 Watanuki was a placeholder existence for Tsubasa Li, yes. Essentially in dynamic universe time travel, two of oneself end up existing in one timeline. Usually in fiction though, oneself looks the same but in TRC/xxxHOliC, much more got altered so although Tsubasa Li and Watanuki share the same soul and dimension, they look different. Yet because two of oneself exist in one timeline, at least in fiction, the universe always tries to kill one of them so two of oneself doesn’t embody the same time. However, spirits chasing Watanuki was not a result of this universe balancing assassination attempt. Spirits were attracted to him because of the magic blood he inherited from Clow Reed’s family line (Li family blood). So although many spirits did attempt to kill him (in a sense then as a result of the universe trying to maintain balance), they would be attracted to him either way. I guess the simplest way to put it is all types of spirits benevolent, malevolent, or benign are attracted to him, but the universe tried to put him into more situations with the malevolent ones to get rid of him.

Thank you for the hard work you put into sharing this on KZfaq. I love Yuuko, watched xxxHolic so many times. I would love to read the manga, and I love that Clamp crossed these manga over and explored dimension interaction. Always wish I knew more about Tsubasa to learn more about Watanuki and Yuuko.

It's the opposite with me 😆 I love Sakura and Syaoran, first in Cardcaptor Sakura and then in Tsubasa Chronicles. So I read the xxxHolic manga to better understand Sakura and Syaoran's story in Tsubasa

Such a great video! Thank you for making this video, there aren’t a ton of KZfaq videos related to explaining the CLAMP multiverse storyline (there are plenty that MENTION it but not many that explain in detail). I finished Tsubasa a few days ago and was left in complete disbelief with how insane the story was and I knew I had to go find videos that could help with explaining the full storyline! I remember hearing about Rayearth on Twitter a year and a half ago… I never thought that would lead me to finding such a great storyline interconnected with other stories.

Clow Reed was mysterious sorcerer born to an English mage father (presumably surnamed Reed) and Chinese priestess mother who was a member of the Li clan of Taoist priests Clow's mixed heritage allowed him to create a new brand of magic that utilized both Western and Asian magics, he apparently put his powers to use as a fortune teller and created the Clow Cards to act as his own brand of tarot cards, he also created magical beings like Yue and Kero

he was a total enigma and made as many enemies as he did friends one of his acquaintances was Yuuko, whom he may have had feelings for, because when Yuuko was dying, he wished for her not to disappear and ended up accidentally trapping her in suspended animation with his powers this state of suspended animation kept Yuuko alive, but separated her from space and time Yuuko was a powerful witch herself, and became the Witch of Dimensions after her time was stopped

Clow's desire for Yuuko to not vanish ended up creating the humanoid entity known as Fei Wang Reed, who became obsessed with breaking the logic of the dead cannot return to life so that he can revive Yuuko and prove that he is better than Clow and that is what starts the events of XXXHOLIC and TSUBASA RESERVOIR CHRONICLES

realizing that his power was too great and believing it was time for him to part with the world of the living, Clow decided to allow himself to die, he sealed Yue, Kero, and the Clow Cards in to a book, after that, his final act was to split his soul in half and create two reincarnations of himself, one was Sakura's father, who had no magic or past life memories, the other was Erol, who had past life memories and magic this is what starts the events of Cardcaptor Sakura

A simplified summary, but I must address a few points. Only the dub of the CCS anime says the Li clan were Taoist priests, the original Japanese just says magicians so we should not assume they are associated with the religion of Taoism. As for the Clow cards, yes they acted like tarot cards, but their primary purpose was to utilize the magic each card represented, e.g. flight, fire, etc. As for Clow's enemies/friends being about the same number, I suppose this is accurate if one remembers he did not make many friends beyond Yuko. He was at odds with the secret magicians titled "D." in Britain (though not enemies); he was in a complex relationship with Madoushi in the anime; and he was definite enemies with Fei Wang, but the list pretty much stops there. As for Yuko, her Dimensional Witch title resulted from her magic that transcended dimensions/space&time. While yes, probably gaining this magic after her time was stopped, I just wanted to clarify the causation. Lastly, only The Light remained in the book when Clow sealed Yue and Kero at his death, the rest were scattered throughout Tomoeda for Sakura Kinomoto to later find. (That said, in the anime, all the cards remained in the book until Sakura Kinomoto accidentally used The Windy to scatter them; but the anime is non-canon) Still, glad to see another fan's interest in these series.

I've been a fan of clamp's work since I was little (litterly grew up watching it) and I just recently took my time to get into the multiverse/ deeply analyze what I grew up on. Wow! This video was soo good. I already rewatched it 3 times to pick up everything. Now i think i can read xxxholic and understand this characters interactions. Because i only watched blood-c, kobato, xxxholic and ccs anime. Maybe i will allow myself to enter this universe. Thank you

Glad you enjoyed. Just a reminder though, as I say in the description, anime sources are less accurate and might be non canon: Clow may never have in the manga canon met Madoushi or moved to Hong Kong but went straight to Japan. Or at the least Madoushi never successfully lured Sakura to Hong Kong in canon even if she did know Clow and made a book to trap him in. But most of what I said in the video is from canon. P.S. I didn’t mention it in the video but Fei Wang’s dreemseer aide Xing Huo is likely a failed clone of Yuko. This is what the fan base including myself beloved. Hence why she also knew Clow’s last words to Yuko “the dream must end” and so helped Tsubasa Li escape.

@@vawexa123 yes, the shop’s magic prevents him from physically aging while he stays in it. I would reckon it is similar magic to Clow‘s in that powerful magicians can prevent their bodies from aging even over hundreds of years. That said, just because magicians, or in this case one who is magically preserved while in the shop, physically do not age, they eventually will die; Watanuki admits this too saying he will one day die but won’t (he is resolved to stay alive this long though whether his end will come despite this is unknown) until he meets Yuko again.

I just redid my math which I also used for my timeline video and I may have miscounted the number of "greats" between Shizuka Domeki and his descendant Sayaka. Just thought I'd let you know as I said in this video Watanuki stayed in the shop over 150 years but it might be closer to 132-147 years. Here is the math if Sayaka is Shizuka's great grandson and not great great grandson, so estimate 40-45 years old when each member of the Domeki line had his son, and Shizuka would have been so 22 years after Watanuki took ownership of the shop and Sayaka was about 30 years old at the end of Rou. I guess one could also round down and guess minimum of 117 if each member had a son at 35.

In the comic, yuuko also have relationship with Subaru who have a twin (probably the same Subaru from X/1999). It's kinda sad Clamp halted the Xxxholic rei, I really want to understand the continuation of watanuki and friends stories. Marudashi & morodashi, also soel & lard, didn't disappear with the death of yuuko, while copy of Sakura & syaoran disappeared after fei Wang death, so maybe there's still a trace of yuuko in the world. Mokona modoki are substantially powerful, they are after the image of a God after all (Mokona who created universes in the magic knight ray earth world), I kinda doubt watanukis power are enough to maintain all four of them (mokonas, and maru Moro) especially in the beginning he inherited the store.

Also, in the Xxxholic comic, maru & Moro can't leave the store, the reason (probably there are more than one) is because they don't have souls, yet the Mokonas can freely go anywhere by themselves, even to other worlds, does that mean yuuko & Clow made them with souls? Another question for me is Yue (yukito), he was a man made being by Clow in cardcaptor Sakura, and yet in tsubasa there are so many version of him. Does Yue in cardcaptor actually a copy of original yukito in that world (or from another world?) There are so many misteries with yuuko and clow created beings.

@@banyu123 Good point about Yuko knowing Subaru, I had lumped it in this video since it isn’t critical to the plot (just one of many people Yuko came to know through her work) but it is a great trivia bit nonetheless. As for your points on Maru and Moro, Watanuki did have enough power to sustain them since he was a blood relative of Clow Reed. Even if he didn’t have his full power ready when he took over the shop, like with Yue in Cardcaptor being sustained by Clow’s residual magic after his death, the residual magic of Yuko would keep sustaining the twins for a time. As for the Mokona, yes, they have souls, but good point how maybe they would potentially disappear, since clones cease to exist if their creator dies. Either this is a plot hole or the Mokona were actually just made in the image of the original Mokona rather than cloned from him. Lastly, regarding Yukito’s appearance in Tsubasa, if I recall, he only appears outside of the Cardcaptor segment in Clow Country. There are two explanations. 1, this is the same Yukito as in Cardcaptor but who has been sustained through his masters for eons (since I believe Clow Country in the Cardcaptor dimension’s distant future), or 2, this is a reincarnated Yukito (since currently in Clear Card, Yue is trying to make himself and Yukito separate beings, so we have to see how that plays out).

Do you mean then a video on Ichiro Mihara?--Considering he is the only character with any major influence in both series (although this may be limited to he created Angelic Layer and persocoms). Other characters just show up in a scene regarding Kaede's death and even her story amounts to divorced parents where she lives with one and her brother lives with the other. I suppose a more expansive video could show characters like Ichiro's roles in the manga vs the anime but I already have a video series on this concept planned. Although I guess another idea is to showcase the different incarnations of characters (e.g. Ichiro in Kobato. and Tsubasa). Anyway, if you have any specifics on how you would like an Angelic Layer/Chobits video, please let me know.

Sadly Fujitaka and half of Clow is only canon in the manga ver. They completely changed it in the CCS anime along with adding Mei-Ling. Also there is a Male Clow Card "THE TIME" it's an old man.

Quite true. Unless I am forgetting one small conversation with Fujitaka (and with 70 episodes I may indeed be forgetting something) the anime seems more structured to believe the Kinomoto line inherently has strong magic in the family apart from Clow's line. Meanwhile The Time has been shown to actually be female (CLAMP personally drew all the Clow cards before the anime debuted) but the animators mistook her long hair in the background as a beard and so animated her completely wrong. All Clow cards (aside from items) are indeed female.

Is there something specific you wish to know or have elaborated upon? The manga ends with Watanuki still waiting for Yuko to return despite having waited about 115 years already. Domeki’s descendant now holds the egg that will never hatch, waiting for the day it will be needed to help Watanuki, and Watanuki can now leave the shop as he is no longer bound by the price he and Tsubasa Li paid to fix the multiverse. The anime ends differently with Yuko implied to have reincarnated. That essentially sums it up but I could do a more in depth video if that is what you mean, provided I had a little direction as to if more needs to be said.

I have been holding off on anything too specific on the off chance Clear card has some crossover revelations with xxxHOLiC or Tsubasa (especially the Star staff dream exchange between Sakuras), but while those concerns are still unreleased, I could at least review what mysteries xxxHOLiC left behind (the ending of Rou, the ending of Rei, the ending of the anime, and the implications of BLOOD-C). It may take a week or two but I’ll try to have something out after I’m not so busy.

P.S. Such a video may have to be open ended as recent reports I have read suggest Rei is coming back into production this year. I personally still expect a delay as nothing official has been released on CLAMP's calendar, but it does seem Rei is next on CLAMP's priority list after Clear card. Still, I question the answers Rei would provide as it continues to tease the egg and since it is a midquel, we already know Yuko hasn't returned yet and the egg remains unused, but I'll cover this in the video I suppose.
