In this video I will demonstrate the main ways DJs transition between songs.
Let’s start with one of the most popular and common used transitions of all time:
1: the fade - huge for wedding DJs
2: hitting play where you wish to introduce your new song (really popular when mixing trap, breakdowns without beats, shorter intro’s to mix in)
3: giving yourself time to mix in before doing your transition (really popular for house, longer intros, more time to mix)
4: trigger / fast mixing - to avoid vocals (quick transitions - keep energy moving, avoid vocals on vocals)
5: looping in, giving yourself even more time to mix in your new song (great for songs with shorter intros)
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to getting club ready.

So true! I play techno, but at some point had to incorporate some pop tunes from the radio, cause not everyone enjoys techno as much as I do. But after all it is good, cause you can learn new things. It is also some kind of a development, cause you become a better DJ if you can mix different songs and not only stay in your techno - or whatever music you play - comfort zone. Peace to everyone!

He started livestreaming since COVID killed the Gabriel & Dresden Remedy tour, and now Dave plays trance AND techno, because he slowly realized that unlike the clubs, his audience is just here for a good time and we don't care where the genres go. I actually love how a lot of DJs can play more of whatever they want now, cause I've seen some REALLY creative sets

Many DJ tutorials explain the "how", but not many explain the "why" and "when" you should use certain techniques. Your tutorials are by far the most comprenshive and well explained of any I've come across. Great job!

Dude! This is brilliant. I was a self taught DJ in the early 90's (way before the internet). Learnt how to beat match on 1210's and was basically banging them in one after another without a thought of transition. I've just got back into it after many years and realised very soon how difficult the transition is. You've opened my eye's! I often find myself doing the loop in loop out method because it allows me to play around and create in my mind my own edits that are unique sounding but in doing so I feel like I am not playing enough songs in my time slot. These videos are so freaking helpful man thank you!

Dude, you are a legend. I was a small venue club DJ back in the day, so i know tune arrangement and when and where to mix. But now, just watching this 25 minute video, you have totally changed my method of transitioning from one track to another. That was a pretty sweet tutorial, particularly that tip about cutting the midrange EQ and coming in from "inside" the outgoing track. I'm a long time offender of just relying on the bass and treble EQ's but I reckon working the midrange more will help to smooth out my mixes. Subscribed!

Just come across your video and ive been djaying for a few years lets say and all the old classics are ones that get people going but sometimes that can be boring fo us djays. What I liked was your spin about picking up any tune and being able to make it sound good, recently ive been doing just that and enjoying the sets even more as its something fresh for your ears after youve mixed them in, I felt a bit of a cheat as I hadnt learnt the tune but still enjoyed playing the sets and hearing you say that, made me feel that im not doing a bad thing when it comes to djaying, thanks man

As a new DJ, I've been trying my best to get better at freestyle transitioning. I play a lot of local clubs and am expected to take requests, so it can be a challenge coming up with interesting transitions between songs you aren't super familiar with and also are all over the place. Love the positivity and I agree, as long as the audience enjoys the music, you are a good DJ. But a GREAT DJ will be the full package, unique mixes, good selection, and a performer too

Been a djay 30years but only really learnt mixing over the last 10 years ,,,Ive found myself playing a lot of dirty tunes ,all different styles ,it’s so much fun ,especially when just messing about as I get more creative and occasionally that really comes out when playing live ,I’m 20 mins I and I’ve not learnt much but sure as enjoying you’re style of teaching

Looping out is an essential skill to me, it helps so much. Looping in... that can make for very interesting and rewarding transitions, especially with tricky songs! I mixed vinyl for years and just began using a small controller, it’s so much fun and there is so much room for creativity. Thanks for these videos, they are a great help!

Honestly, lining up those loops so I get the right exit point for the drops I want is the most challenging thing...Especially on impromptu sets where I'm just playing and haven't prepared anything. When I do prepare music I sometimes set cue points on track A so I know where I want to enter and exit the loop on track B. I find that this is a neat little trick when you need to hit that drop perfectly.

I’m self taught for about a year now and method 3 is how I do a lot of my mixing naturally. I dj techno and tech house mostly and I’ve found a mix of that and smart looping with fxs works a lot of the time.

Intuitively instinctively without much formal training I use cue points to get to the good stuff and out of a track when the good stuff goes away to keep the audience engaged. I may not yet set them precisely yet but I love your videos!

Great vid man! I have a background in bands and making my own beats in Reason but I literally just bought a ddj flx4 to get started in dj!
