Completely unrelated topic, sort of. I experiment mixing with many different music genres but i do mainly techno because with techno you can be as constructive as you can possibly imagine. These long drawn out intros and outros make is possible to build your transition basically frequency by frequency or if you have 3-4 decks maybe, make a completely different track on the fly if you carefully pick each song and adjust their eq to fit one another. The fact that you can do this only using eq is my favorite thing about it. Mixing with eq can be so fulfilling an satisfying that once you get the hang of it, you'd never wanna stop. Man i love mixing

If possible, try and find a club or location where you can maybe practice during daytime. The bar where i play the weekends now, I was allowed to dj during times they were closed. How are you doing now? Maybe this advice is too late for you since it's been 10 months, in that case this is for whoever else reads it!

Brother, I have been DJing for 34 years with vinyl and have finally embraced digital over the last year or so, I have found it to be eye-opening and exciting (wish I'd done it sooner). I feel like I have a lot to learn and a lot of catching up to do. I have been checking out a lot of the various DJ schools/teachers on YT but you are by far my favourite. I love your enthusiasm, and energy and value the depth of detail you go into. This video subject is the exact thing I have toying around with of late, so nice one for that, spot on. Thanks for all you do much love from the UK.

I am also djing since 30 years, 20 of them on vinyl. It isnt that easy to change from vinyl to digital. It took me a while, even for rekordbox, how to set up tracklist to remember the tracks. With Vinyl i remembered the cover, with digital i needed to find a different way to remember. I am now on digital since 8 years or so (the last 3 years more regularly), and still learning a lot. Good luck with digital, i am amazed with all the possibilities and i also think, why didnt i start earlier! :)

@@peggydeluxe @Peggy Deluxe Thanks for the message Peggy, it's nice to read other peoples experiences with the same thing. It's funny that you mentioned the way that you used to identify your records through the images on the record sleves as that is the exact the same for me. I have always been terrible with remembering names and would always use the imagery but that's not so easy with Rekordbox, especially as I use WAV files and not MP3. I am still toying with different techniques but I am thankful that there are many ways available to achieve this task. Good luck to you too, and I hope see you out, tearing up the arena in the not-too-distant future having mastered the digital realm🤞🙏

I don't use the memory cues to go through the tracks. I use the Hot cues as the "going through the track" and Memory cues as "labels" of where to mix out etc. If a track starts with 16 bars of beats, the first hot cues are the first beat, 8 bars and the breakdown at 16bars. If there's a vocal "while" that point comes, I put the hot cues on the start of the vocal and a memory cue on that start of the bar. On the end of the track I put a red memory cue on where I should be completely out (end of bar, or right before the vocals of the next part come in), An orange memory cue at the start of the 8 bars before that point A yellow memory cue 16 bars before that point. It's like a stoplight kind of system. If there's multiple of these mixout points (cut a track short or let it play) I put multiple of these cuepoint sets. This is just my default way. It depends on track to track. Some radio edits don't have 16 bars of intro or house stuff has longer intro's etc. So there I adjust it to the track. Or some tracks even have structures that benefit from doing it completely different. I always use Rekordbox to DJ anyway, so I don't care that this might not be possible on CDJ's alone. But this workflow makes DJ'ing way more easy. I do this all in advance when I import the tracks into RB. So when I play I don't have to think about how or where to mix. Just select good tunes and have fun. Many DJ's feel like this takes the skills out of DJ'ing and that might be true to some extend, but I started out in the vinyl days and use the technology of today to it's fullest. I felt like I stayed on the safe side more when I DJ'ed vinyl or in the beginning of CD days. Now I don't have to know all my tracks completely in and out to mix em up in more interesting ways.

Thanks for this! I’ll try out your system. I don’t think it takes the skill out of DJing any more than a calculator takes the skill out of math. The skill comes from having an ear for what sounds good. The cue points just help you focus more attention on your skill.

Hot Cue was the therm used by Denon when they released the dual cdj 2000(1992),that meant you didnt need to long press the button to activate it but a fast push like it was kind of Hot!Thats why the CUE used to be red and Play green! Back in the days the Denon 2000 was the Technics 1200 of the cd players(cdj was a therm used later only with the pioneer cdj 100´s).

Great video bro. Love your content, it’s really helpful and the energy’s great! Thanks for doing these videos. Question: How did you set the hot cue to just play the vocal or a short bit you wanted in the 2nd part of the hot cue tips? When I set a hot cue and use it, it just continues playing the rest of the song from where I set the hot cue. But when you pressed it, it looks like when you release your finger off the button it stops playing. I hope that makes sense. Cheers and thanks again. 👊🏼

I think what you are referring to is stem separation . There are currently two programs that you can use that has this feature. Algoriddim Djay Pro or VirtualDJ. Algoriddim have Neural mix and Virtual have stem separator,, they are basically the same thing.. The bad thing about Memory-Cues is that mostly only the first one is portable. And by portable I mean Memory Cues are basically a pioneer only thing. Denon, Serato and so on are using Hot-Cues and thus can't just import Memory Cues without converting them. This might clash when you also use Hot-Cues. If your are Pioneer only then you are fine. If not you might consider using Hot-Cues and temporary Cues only or none at all.

Maybe you should mention in the beginning that your hot cues are set differently than the default. In default, they play the song upon pressing them. in your case, the songs only plays until you hold them, and after releasing them, goes back to the start of the hot cue.

Hi, I don't want to seem dis-spirited, as your videos are amazing, and your contribution to the djing culture is open, wholesome, and invaluable, however, cue points were possible and heavily utilised with vinyl. Through the 90s, mainly for set pieces and DMC routines, everybody had stickers all over their vinyl. But, more importantly, before that djs would look for the thick black breaks through tracks. This was not as precise and usable as modern cue point setting, however, it can't be denied as a serious tool of a serious dj. Thanks again for your content, and your eagerness to pass on knowledge.

Hi Andrew! Following you from Argentina! I have a question/video suggestion (=D) based on something I struggle with sometimes. My main genres are Melodic Techno and Progressive House. Nowadays every track comes with a 1 minute + breakdown, and I think letting every breakdown play out can easily become boring and kill the energy on the dancefloor, how do you manage this? How can we mix around to avoid this? Where to put mix in/out points to avoid this? etc....Anyway, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say! Cheers brother! PS: The best thing about your material, besides the knowledge and experience you share, is your energy and good vibes!! Thank you for that!

Can I ask a quick question please? Not really regarding this video.... I was thinking of starting to upload my mixes to various platforms, do my mixes really need to be Matered or can I upload them as is? Thanks..

I’ve never mastered any of my mixes, I believe mastering is for individual songs.

@@LobstaLegs I've been reading that if your putting your mixes on platforms then they should be Mastered/Normalized or compressed to reduce the peaks and bring all the mix together to make it sound louder and better.. Can't be arsed with all that nonsense lol.....

Hi mate... Quick question... I have audio coming out both monitors and laptop and it's bloody annoying... I've tried to isolate the audio from laptop but it's still coming through.... Any ideas.

There's a little picture of a speaker in the menu bar of RB, just turn that off and run it through your speakers only :)
