I remember when this was released. The 3 endings were never meant to be shown together. Instead, 3 different prints of the movie were made, each with a different ending. How it ended changed based on where the movie showed, or as their ads said, "Whodunnit depends on where you see it." The paper would have showings for Ending A, Ending B, and Ending C. Clever idea, but it really works with all 3 endings smashed together, as it really amplifies the comedic tone of the movie.

I saw it in the theater when it came out, I was in high school. I saw the Miss Scarlett ending and didn’t see the other endings for probably 20 years. I was familiar with Madeline Kahn from Young Frankenstein and Michael McKeon from “Laverne and Shirley.” Probably Martin Mull, too. They all play off each other so well. I actually bought it recently, Love the wacky humor and dialogue. The “Sha-Boom” scene is my favorite, although all of them running through the house as Wadsworth explains what happened is pretty awesome, too.

It would be a disaster to remake it under the original script. It could not have been better executed. But what I really want to see is a more serious adaptation of the premise of the Board Game. Don’t focus on comedy as much this time around. Do for the Clue characters what Christopher Nolan did for Batman. Have it take place in a different time and setting (instead of New England during the Cold War era, make it somewhere in the U.K. Or in another part of the States as an alternative, and my preferred time period would be somewhere between the two World Wars. Don’t modernize it too much, for the sake of budget, because that would be a mistake. It loses some of it’s charm when you do that. All the characters should have different stories and motivations from the 1985 film, but still recognizable for who they are, or have been, over the years in the board game. Some extra characters could be along for the ride, but by the end only the six classic characters can be suspected of the murder. I’d commit to such a project as this film myself, but I have neither the money, the qualifications as a screenwriter or a director, nor the patience. I just know they will have a gold mine of success if they follow this general outline. Edit: One last but important thing I forgot to add. The only thing I would preserve from the 1985 film is the idea of having multiple endings. Because that is what you have with the board game. In fact, this is a crucial part of the whole premise of the game, that there is no definitive answer to who the murderer is, what weapon was used, and which room it took place in. Maybe they could make an ending that’s supposed to be canon, but I would avoid that unless they really think they can do something new and convincing with it, an ending that you can’t get while playing the board game.

Yet when people think about Scarface with Al Pacino people fail to acknowledge its a remake. A good movie is a good movie. In my opinion its not the IP that defines a good film. In my opinion, it's about how well the writing is, direction done, and how well acted or portrayed the characters are. Clue is a difficult task. A lightening in the bottle with some of the best comedians of its time with some of the best writing. Speaking of the remake and the production process of rebooting/remaking it I only hope its good. Clue itself is a parody of the mystery theater genre and it has a hill to climb to bring something fresh and iconic but I hope its at least fun and a good watch.

I definitely second the "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" recommendation, although I don't think it qualifies as a murder mystery in the same way. Technically I guess it is, but while some movies - like Knives Out and Clue - are written for the viewer to try to keep it up and try to solve the case before the protagonist, I don't think "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" is like that. I recommended both "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and "Lucky Number Slevin" in her Knives Out reaction comments; I'll reiterate that while also saying that I think it, like "Roger Rabbit", also doesn't quite work that way. I guess you can *try* to figure the mystery out, but I don't think any of those movies are designed like that, while Knives Out and Clue are, I think. They're adjacent genres but not the same, I think.

My favorite bit of trivia about this movie is that it takes place in real time. When Wadsworth announces the police will be there in 45 minutes... That's how long before the doorbell rings with the evangelist who is later revealed to be the police chief. There are obviously cuts and perhaps some inconsistencies, but in broad strokes there are no time lapses or shortcuts, just an hour and change of panicking over this mystery.

Going for movies based on Agatha Christie novels would be right up your alley. There are several versions of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, as well as 10 Little Indians. Evil Under the Sun from 1981 is a good one. They did a Poirot series starring David Souchet that, by the end, had filmed every Poirot story / novel that Agatha Christie had written. The short stories are about 45 to 50 min as filmed, the novels are from 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45. The production values are quite high for all of them and Souchet is considered the definitive Hercule Poirot.

When it comes to Poirot films, I would recommend the Peter Ustinov ones: Death on The Nile: Murder inThree acts (I believe it is called): The one at The Folly and Death under The Sun. However, for lighter enjoyable old Miss Marple, I would recommend the Margereth Rutherford films such as 4:15 from Paddington and Murder at The Gallop. 10 Little Indians are good too. Of course you always have Old Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone. Great reaction and this is one I always enjoy watching again and again. Such memorable lines and Tim Curry as always, is amazing. Bless him.

@@jaquesshugossen9398 The good thing about 10 Little Indians, also called And Then There Were None, is the story has been the premise in several different movies through the years. But the truly neat thing is that each of the movies takes place in a different location such as a ski lodge, a dessert location, a tropical island but all with the same premise. This makes them neat because you get to see how they adapt the method of murder for each killing to be different but still work with the same line of the poem.

The earlier Suchet Poirots are pretty faithful adaptations of the books / stories (except for them wedging in certain characters to have continuity for a series, which is forgivable). The later ones are a bit messed about with in much the same vein as the ITV Miss Marple. The Margaret Rutherford films are very good, and Agatha Christie was actually involved with them. And Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple is good. The best Miss Marple, though, is hands down Joan Hickson (Christie, in the 60s, predicted she'd to one day play Miss Marple). Another decent one that's not *too* messed about with is Murder is Easy with Bill Bixby. (Christie, but not Marple or Poirot.) The Ustinov Poirots were Death on the Nile, Murder in Three Acts, Dead Man's Folly, Evil under the Sun, Thirteen at Dinner, and Appointment with Death. Albert Finney in Murder on the Orient Express is excellent (apart from his moustaches).

Part of the reason the murder is so difficult to figure out is because the script wasn't finished when they started filming. Landis & Lynn thought it would be easier to write than it was, so they just threw out a bunch of murders and figured the ending would come naturally.

The first time I saw Clue, I was still a little kid. My family had a (somewhat poorly) recorded tape of it, and I watched it a lot. I always thought the "real" ending was kind of rushed, but I always liked that Green turned out to be a badass. I mean, he was always the smartest person in the room (except Wadsworth), but in the end you find out that his bumbling was just an act to throw people off. These days, I tend to think of the second ending, with Mrs. Peacock, as making the most sense, because multiple murders is one thing, but multiple **murderers** is just too hard to believe.

@@Glittersword I watched the Albert Finney version. And MotOE was a case of a group of people collectively deciding to murder one person, not multiple people each independently deciding to murder someone on the spur of the moment. "Hey, someone was murdered tonight. Hey, someone *else* was murdered tonight. I guess now **I'll** murder someone, too." I mean, it's fine, because Clue is just that kind of movie. @@PaperbackWizard Totally agree about Miss Peacock being the more logical murderer. The last ending works because it’s not meant to be realistic & it’s funny with lots of Easter eggs. Plus, any character can & will be the killer in the game. Also, the Finney version of MotOE is the best. The episode of is so melodramatic at the end, which is so not Poirot from the books. They weirdly made him ultra-Catholic in the adaptation, which is odd because in the books he only ever mentions his religious belief occasionally & never even mentions going to mass or confession. It’s also just strange because most of the Suchet episodes don’t focus on his faith either. As someone whose read all of her crime fiction, it’s just the weirdest adaptation because it’s not something her mystery fiction ever focused on.

I have an unconventional suggestion for a thriller/mystery. "Silver Streak" from 1976. Unfortunately, it's not really the type of story that's set up for the audience to guess the culprit. It is, however, the best pairing ever of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. It's a mostly serious thriller, but with comedy provided by the chemistry between Wilder and Pryor. Also, it has a really impressive special effects set-piece (for the time) at the end.

Most writers choose to hide certain information till the end or present red herrings to throw readers off and then choose who the killer is. Scarlet, Mustard and Mrs White with Evette route, Professor Plum and Mrs Peacock killing everyone Route and finally Everyone kills except Mr Green Route. It's all tied together amazingly well.

Hey, Cass! Kudos for reacting to this movie! It's definitely one of my favorites! I saw it in a theater and my multiplex in New York played all three options. You bought an A, B or C ticket which designated the auditorium the specific ending was featured in. I bought the VHS and then the DVD. I must have seen this film over thirty times! It never gets old. Tim Curry gives a tour-de-force performance as Wadsworth. The cast are all comedy greats in perfect sync with each other. It's a wonderful little gem. There's been talk of a remake but this is a lightning-in-a-bottle situation like "Ghostbusters" or "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!" A different cast would change the dynamic completely. You tried to solve the murders but the crimes are incidental to the comedy! While all three solutions hold up under close scrutiny, you're not expected to identify the right culprit although there's no harm in trying. It's really just meant to be a madcap backstage farce all in good fun! The board game is a perennial staple like Monopoly that's been around since 1949! The movie utilizes all the characters, weapons, rooms and secret passages that are components in the game. The board is a representation of Boddy Mansion and Mr. Boddy, the host, is the victim. Another good comedic whodunnit is "Murder By Death" which features parody versions of the great cinematic sleuths like Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, Sam Spade, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple gathered together by real-life true-crime author Truman Capote. A terrific whodunnit with a psychological twist is "Identity"! Trivia unrelated to the production: Lesley Ann-Warren and Susan Sarandon have been mistaken for each other so often in real life that the actresses agreed to sign autographs using their doppelganger's name if erroneously requested by fans!

Cass it's great to have you back, you were missed. My recommendation is an ancient mystery film who's title was adopted for a classic magic trick called 7 keys to Baldpate. Also, there is another popular ending for Clue if you search the web. Fun reaction as always.

Loved watching you guess your way through this, and your reactions - especially once you realized the ending wasn't really the ending! I'd recommend watching Psych Season 7 Episode 5 "100 Clues" - which does a bit of a homage to this movie ;) They wound up having Tim Curry (the butler) on an earlier episode, so they didn't reuse him for this one sadly. But several other actors from the movie are in it. What was even wilder with this movie, was that when I saw it in the theatre, I saw one of the endings, while a friend from school saw a different ending - which was very confusing for a couple of kids.

There is a t.v. show from 1975 called Ellery Queen. Murder mystery, but the twist is it is actually made for the viewer to solve. it gives the viewers time at the end to go over everything, and then the "hero" tells how it was done and by who. this show is tailor made for you.

I enjoyed your reaction to this marvellous film based on the game. In the U.K. the game is called Cluedo & the murdered person is called Dr. Black, as all names revolve around colours. Also, Mr. Green is called Reverend Green, in other words a member of the clergy. As quite often in British murder mysteries, a local Vicar from a local village, is involved in some way.

In the original theatrical release, there were 3 versions, each with a single ending. They were released randomly, with each theater getting a single version. No one was told there were three versions. They just wanted to sow chaos when people talked about the film.

So when Clue released in theaters, the different endings were used as the 'official' ending in different locations. So in New York you may have seen the version where Ms. Scarlet is the murderer but in Los Angeles you may have seen Mrs. Peacock as the murderer. A truly amazing ploy to confuse audiences talking to each other about "who done it".

This is a fantastic Murder Mystery, which is a rare genre in movies (At least, in the truest form of a literal Murder Mystery). But if you are looking for Murder Mystery-like movies, here are a few suggestions of many movies of different genres which encroach on it the ol' whodunit that you could find very interesting: - *Seven* (1995); Psychological Thriller/Drama - *Memento* (2000); Psychological Thriller - *Identity* (2003); Psychological Thriller/Horror - *Sherlock Holmes* (2009); Fantasy/Drama/Comedy - *Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows* (2011); Fantasy/Drama/Comedy - *Minority Report* (2002); Sci-Fi/Psychological Thriller - *The Fugitive* (1993); Drama - *Who Framed Roger Rabbit* (1988); Comedy - *The Frighteners* (1996); Comedy/Supernatural Fantasy - *Saw* (2004); Horror/Psychological Thriller

I love how every first time watcher of this movie takes it soo seriously. They actually think they’re picking up on “clues” and solving a mystery. Not till the end do they realize that absolutely nothing was solved and you, the viewer, were the one who was playing a made up game. After seeing it for the first time it becomes a straight up comedy with every subsequent view.

Clue the game was invented in England. In the British version of the game, "Mr. Green" is instead "Reverend Green," an Anglican parson. But when the game came to America, it was considered too controversial for a clergyman to be a murder suspect, so the character was literally defrocked. It makes you think, how would this movie have been different if Green had been a clergyman instead of an FBI agent...

12:49 - "Maybe he was poisoned!" He could not have been poisoned, because each of the classic six weapons was already in play: The revolver, rope, knife, candlestick, pipe, and wrench. Poison was not one of the six weapons. (There was a later expanded edition of the game with more rooms, more suspects, and more weapons- one of which was poison. But that didn't come out until a few years after this film.)

It's kinda funny she mentions that "nowadays...we'd never get in the car with the stranger like they did in the 50's" as Scarlett does with Plum... It's funny because it's 100x SAFER now than then, statistically. Crime, and specifically stranger crime, are at HISTORIC LOWS, and continue to drop 😂

What I love about Clue (the movie) is that it demonstrates just how much of a folly most murder mysteries are. Both in cinema and literature the real solution only looks bulletproof if you don't look at any other possible solutions, because they too in isolation can look bulletproof. Sometimes the solution involves information not available to the viewer/reader making any attempts to solve it pointless. Now when you were young/er was the game you played Clue or Cluedo? It is the same game, but the name was changed for the American market.

Never worry about figuring this one out. In writing a mystery story, there are generally two ways writers do it, the good way and the bad way. In the good way, they put all the clues you need to solve it right there in the open. It really well written if they can distract your attention away from them or if the mystery is such a puzzle you can't figure it out. The bad way involves cheating. They hide the clues you need to solve the crime until the investigator of the show is already solving the crime. This is cheating because you aren't even given the chance to solve it, as you aren't given enough information. Clue unfortunately is the type that hides the information necessary, so you could never have solved it. It's not a bad thing though, because it's a comedy, not a murder mystery. Plus, with three separate endings, it would have been incredibly difficult to write. Add to that, the ending us just so much more fun when your surprised, so by doing it the bad way, they guaranteed you hadn't solved it, thus your surprised. Such a fun movie.

The floorpan of the first floor is the same as the boardgame. There is no basement, second floor, or attic in the game. But nothing of consequence really happens there; it's just an excuse to split up. The kitchen, Parlor, etc. are laid out in the same order in this set, as they are on the playing board. The secret passages also lead to and from the same rooms as the board.

Hitchcock was the Master and is my Second favorite Director (but really close to being First).
