Used to see a lot of Nivas out in the Brazilian countryside (swapped with Toyota Diesels often enough since they were easier to get parts for and stronger) ... one road that now takes about an hour to traverse took about 8 hours about 20 years back. I've seen ruts 3-4 feet deep where the rain has washed out dirt roads and pot holes big enough to fit a VW beetle in.

The Lada Niva has been in production since 1976/1977 w/little changes, except for in appearance. Just like you, I'd like a Lada Niva from the 1980s; I like the older Lada Nivas better than the newer 1's b/c I think they look better in terms of design of the back lights & interior.

This probably was the best car that came out of the Soviets. Engineering principles were actually quite good for a capable non-luxurious off-road vehicle. Suspension had springs and shock absorbers and it had disc brakes. Later models had fuel injection. It was let down by a horrible build quality and very poor rust protection.
@turboseize8 жыл бұрын
That is not correct. Rust protection is not poor. It is non existant. :-D I am researching buying a Niva, actually. From all I can gather, build quality seems to be abysmally bad, and you read from a lot of people buying bran dnew ones and doing lots of trips to their mechanic to get the car fixed (once again). I think that sounds great: all the joys of classic car ownership - but with a brand new car. Oh, and I like the looks of it - and I like that it seems to be ridiculously capable offroad. No, I don't really need a Niva. But I desperately want it.

+Ismail Alili Jeep Wrangler can't be best offroad car. With each generation it gets heavier and heavier. Heavy short wheelbase offroad isn't really good idea, bit of mud and easily you'll end up with 0 wheels on solid gravel, no trackion and sinking. Also, you can no longer fix anything on Wrangler by yourself in the woods. What makes Niva still great is that it did remain dead simple vehicle.
@Konformation078 жыл бұрын
+El Shuwix Only an idiot isn't able to track or fix a Jeep Wrangler out in the woods. I've owned 5 of them all being different generations. I've broken a few things (not a lot all because of my screw ups rock climbing them) and I have fixed them all. With that said it is getting more and more useless features but the 2 door at least with a manual still remains simple. I've owned a Niva as well and it's good. I have had no problems with it relatively but it doesn't seem any simpler than most of my Wranglers. It's definitely simple but so is the Jeep. They come in a wide range from simple to plush. I hate the plush ones to be honest.

No airbags and automatic transmission. Anyway it was an epic car for it's time and it was a beginning of absolute new class of car-based unibody SUVs ruling the market today. The more I look at this car the more it reminds me of a 1985 Panda 4x4

@Desmonddd2002 I would say that lada should be tougher. Because it's unbelievably simple. It's just wheels, seats and a steel cabin. And all the engineering (even there isn't much of it) is very tough and very simple. In short, lada (and other Russian vehicles of such type) just have so little places to go wrong. But even if it breaks down you can still finish your journey :D

How much does Niva cost in UK please? And compare to price of Suzuki Vitara?

While it is mentioned that the original Lada was allegedly powered by a unique engine, is it known whether the original Lada used a similar engine to the Fiat 1100 (Type 103) and Fiat 1300/1500 that preceded both the Fiat 124 Series and Twin-Cam engines?

All independent suspension like an early Range Rover but half the weight made it a brilliant off road car. I always thought Lada should have partnered with a Western auto specialist to handle the superficial stuff (cabin refinements, emissions, marketing, etc, etc) because the car was a potential world beater. It's still a really nice niche vehicle.

Yes it is but i don't know about the "permission" of the factory (i mean it's diesel or benzin engine) but it's cheaper as you say ;)

Such Niva was officialy converted to a 1.9L 64hp Peugeot diesel engine from the importer in France...but the conversion was expansive... From the cost i read, it's in France (cost from 1 liter LPG= 0.80 to 0.92€/liter)

Well, I think Jeep Rangler is pretty compatible. It might be a bit worse it terms of ride smoothness and mud handling but it is also more reliable, much stronger and it has roomier interior as well.

@suzukiSJ88 I love the Suzuki Samurai. I almost bought one brand new when they came on the market. My only complaint is the leg space (I'm 6' 2"). :)

the niva is the opposite off all those silly SUV's,like the x5. It may not be luxurious but at least it's actually a good offroader.
