As a 3d guy, I learned this about 2 decades ago (along with all the other foundation stuff like sketching, life drawing, lighting, film theory, etc). I must say, however, you have an EXCELLENT grasp of the concepts and your method of explaining it is even better than the 'pros' in the industry (3d) that were trying to teach it to us! :) .. Well done, sir! Subscribed and I think I'm going to just have to put these three Colour Theory vids on repeat as I practice my mini-painting skills (just getting back into it after about...huh...a 20 year hiatus...coincidence with my 3D schooling?...I think not! Pro Tip: DO NOT go to school for longer than 6 months! Just don't! Take a course or two, then practice that and incorporate into your own 'stuff/life'. After a year off...then maybe take another couple courses. But a full "3 year degree"? You're wasting your money 9/10 times).

It's amazing that I work in commercial printing and not until today did I consider that I should be using CMYK as my main reference for miniature painting instead of RGB and it makes heaps of sense. Art school and years of work in the field didn't put the pieces together like you did. Well explained and straightforward. Between this and your oil painting videos it's changing the game for me completely.

Hey man I just want to say thank you for the amazing content! I’ve just recently got back into the hobby with the aim of really stepping my painting up a level and this channel is exactly what I’ve been looking for! The choice of content and, more importantly, the information you deliver and the way you deliver it is precisely what I’ve been searching for! I’m making my way through your vids from start to present day and can’t get enough! I notice you often say to feel free to ask questions and suggestions so if I might chance my arm at a possible topic suggestion..... how you decide your work flow! I often find myself having to repeat steps or accidentally ruining previous work because I’ve done things in the wrong order or something silly! I know it’s probably an obvious thing and a lot down to common sense but you really seem to have it down (you’ve mastered high quality speed painting) so any hints or pointers would be great! Thanks for the great work! Jamie, Belfast

Why do I always feel "dumb as dirt" everytime I watch one of your videos? Answer----I never put 2 and 2 together! I use Photoshop (as a hobby) practically every week; I always use CMYK over RGB as the results are always more vibrant than RGB...........This is why you are simply the best painter on YT.....You point out the technical stuff in a way new people understand and point out the bloody obvious to those who know a bit about colour but hadn't though of applying that knowledge to painting. Once again, you have published a fabtastic video. Thanks a million Marco!!!!

2 interesting books on color, both by same author. Both are titled “Blue & Yellow Don’t Make Green” by Michael Wilcox. The 1st edition was released in late ‘80s and is a little over 100pgs. I’ve had our copy of this for years, uh make that multiple decades 🤙. The 1st edition is pretty easy to find. The 2nd edition is much larger page count and was released around 2002 or so. This 2nd edition can be much harder to find. He has a third book, which I think would be interesting to look through, it is generally a bit $$$ in good condition. It’s a color swatch book w something over 2000 2-color mixes. I’ve never seen a copy, so can’t speak first hand to it. As always, YMMV. Just sharing. Nothing more. Nothing less. Cheers!

Nice! Golden Fluid and Superfluid are also very good for the airbrush! But in general I prefer (more for a budget/money reasoning) the heavy body version, because you can easily thin it down but you can't make paint thicker

Ok so 2 weeks ago blew £70 on acrylic inks to learn to mix and use, whilst totally avoiding the ones I needed to choose to be able to mix vibrant saturated colours.... I have a bunch of pretty colours that can be used straight from the bottle and basically 136 combinations to make muddy browns???? Why has no colour theory vid I've watched before even squeezed this understanding into my brain? Even I grasped it when I saw it play out on the palette.... You're doing great work at my house Marco

Thanks a million!!! It's really a pleasure to share 😉😁😊. I used the proper, universal, official names of the paints so you can enter in every art store of the world and find always exactly the same tones. That's the best way to match the colors with the brand you prefer or have at home 😉. Sadly model companies use their original names on a huge range of paints that for the most part are a blend of pigments so it's difficult to give a conversion without trying them all 😅

So if I went into an art store to buy some artist grade true color wheel acrylic for wargame miniature painting is it as simple as picking them up by the names you use here? Asking as a GW, Vallejo person who honestly has no clue and usually goes off the name, I'd much rather have a pot of cyan sat on my desk rather than a pot of 'magic blue'

Marco, I've seen some Imperial Fists videos where they base coat the model pink. The value sketch goes on top of that, then they come in with the yellow. The pink and the yellow make nice orange shades, while the value sketch yields a nice pure yellow. I'm painting Salamanders so I'm trying to figure out what a good base coat would be to give me a similar effect as the pink does for the yellow. Is an orange base coat -> value sketch -> green the process that I should experiment with?

Yes! There is was! You did an absolutely brilliant job, so thank you! Newbie question that I thought of when you mentioned Alizarin crimson: When you as a pro painter choose your colours, how much, if any, attention do you put into lightfastness when you do display pieces? Is this even relevant at all in the mini world? I suspect that historically in mini painting it has not been a factor when choosing paints and pigments, but I have no idea!
