FROM THE ARCHIVE: This series first aired on TV in 2015.
Mother-of-six Salbiah Zaharudin comes clean on her history of drug abuse. Her children refused to visit her in prison and now, she needs to win back their trust. Suliana Sulaiman too wants to patch things up with her second son. He's all she's got since her eldest boy died.
About the show: Don’t Call Us Poor is a ground-breaking series on low-income families in Singapore. Over four months, five families in Bukit Merah invited cameras into their lives, allowing fly-on-the-wall access as they navigate the ups and downs of life on social assistance. What emerges is a vivid portrait of a little-known and little-understood world.

Sulianah is very eloquent and she speaks good english! I just felt that the way she behaves and speaks is different than the others.. maybe she is well educated but bc of her drug abuse it kinda ruin her life but i am sure things would turn out better for her! And 18:24 the young mother glad that she doesnt allow her kids to mingle with the bad company and seems that she protect her children well @ 18:58 cos they scared of her.... And her kid is so mature to know that what he sees is wrong and bad influence and works hard to be top in the stream

Feel so happy for Sulianah, she worked hard and showed her commitment to her younger son. Salbiah may have been on the wrong road in the past but really admire her determination to get things on the right track and how she is protective of her children and making sure they dont mix with the wrong gang. Relative poverty in Singapore, right near the CBD area and everyday Singaporeans hardly notice them..

What I cannot stand is poor people who only know how to bash rich people for being rich even tho some rich pple legitmately started from scratch and were from poor family... instead of workinh harder to make life better for themselves... I am also poor but sometimes such unwarranted bashing irritates me.

Whatever decisions they have made in the past, it's all been done. You can never unwind time. All you have to do is pick yourself up, dust yourself and think what's the next step. Other Singaporeans who's just pin-pointing their mistakes & government flaws should never say such things. You don't know their struggles & you will never understand them. But, what we can do as a community is to embrace them, encourage them and push them to be better version of their past selves. Start small by helping out your neighbours and relatives. Each effort counts & that shapes us as a person. All the best to these families. Insya'allah, you will be fine♥️

In Singapore 700-800$ income = poor In Indonesia 500-600$ income = have motorbike and small simple house (credit payment method) with almost everyday good meal on the table. Now I understand what the meaning of poor. Not about how much money we have or how big our currency but about what we can get with our income.

Your comment is "judgemental".There are no mistakes -just lessons in life. Everyone wants to be successful in life- but for some it is unattainable There are many variables/factors that we do not know . Intergenerational poverty is a cycle that are challenging for many of these families. These parents are being resilient , and are doing their best to break that cycle. "It takes a village to raise a child"--- time for the community to step up and pitch in. The success of a country is measured how the vulnerable and needy are treated. Salam Ramadhan

Lack of family planning is the cause of poverty, and that starts with education. Your average middle class family is already finding it difficult to raise a kid in Singapore, now imagine a poor family rasing multiple kids, that's basically signing your own poverty certificate. Even my relative who makes a combined income of $20K a month refuses to have kids as they're smart enough to know that it will lead to a poorer quality of life, they are happy and that's what matters. You'll be silly to listen to the govt and be tempted by "baby incentives", that's their way of getting you into deep poverty.
