Digital marketing consultant Firdaus Sani is a fourth-generation Orang Laut. Known as people of the sea, Orang Laut are the indigenous people of Singapore. Firdaus’ grandparents and their children used to call Pulau Semakau home. They were among the 600 residents evacuated from the island in the 1970s.
Though Pulau Semakau stands as a landfill today, Firdaus is determined to keep his heritage and his cultural identity alive. Using the medium he knows best, he started a digital platform sharing the stories of Semakau and also a taste of traditional Orang Laut cuisine.
Graphic designer Glarence Pang is one of the few young faces left in the local scene of Teochew Opera. Coming from a family of Teochew opera singers, Glarence spent much of his growing up years in an opera troupe and he’s never left the art even though he is a working adult now. This is his way of remembering where his family comes from. As long as there is a stage, he has no intention to stop performing.

In 1999, the last mainland landfill on Singapore would end operations also known as Lorong Halus Dumping Ground. At one point, collecting 70 percent of the island's trash singlehandledly with two other dumping sites in its heydays of the 70s. The very next day on the 1st of April, Pulau Semakau would open as a off-shore dumping ground.

I love to watch Hokkien operas from Taiwan. Sge opera performers' movements are not very graceful. I hope Sge can revive interest in Chinese operas.
