A research project led to an innovation that set Desmond Chow on a path to farming. Since 2018, Desmond Chow has been innovating crawfish farming, from developing crawfish feed to developing the world’s first crawfish reproductive technology. His crawfish are free from diseases and environmental pollutants.
Today, he co-owns five crawfish farms across Asia, helping farmers to increase their crop yield. What is driving this Singaporean to innovate crawfish farming? Host Ming Tan finds out as he works as Desmond’s farmhand in his farm and hatchery in Cambodia.

There's already a lot of crawfish farms in Malaysia, you can look for the local breeders. Since there's other breeders, it's good for you to select from their brood stock to introduce new genetic materials since you want to prevent in-breeding. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are big producers of this Australian species.

@user-se6vg7mr1z

Nice one, the Cherax Quadricarinatus (Queensland Yabby) is apparently found in the Northern Australian tropical freshwaters, the "Clarkii" you mention is the famous Louisiana Crawfish, you wonder if the Cherax Quadricarinatus could be grown & harvested in LOUISIANA, making a bigger harvest and bigger profit?..There is also the Blue Yabby (Cherax Constructor) found in the colder Southern waters of Australia, plus the two biggest freshwater "crawfish" in the World are found in Australia, the Tasmanian & also the Murray/Darling "Freshwater Crawfish" reaching 2-5 kilos, these types of "crawfish" or "crayfish" are IDEAL FOR NORTH AMERICAN, SOUTH AMERICAN & EUROPEAN MARKETS, as you can see, the "type" or "species" grown and harvested depends on "colder/cooler" or "hotter/warmer" climates.

Interesting that it's profitable to grow crawfish AND fish in the same pond. Normally you'd figure one of the two would be more profitable (probably the crawfish) and you'd just grow one. But probably the limiting factor on the craw fish is the bottom surface and raising the density just leads to more losses fighting, whereas the plants still leave enough ammonia-handling capacity to raise some fish.

Has anyone tried to farm those Australian big butt honker crawfish in the USA? Would the USFWS allow them to? When Cajun boiled, do they taste the same as our apparently scrawny-sized American crawdads?
@kenxiong6830

I think they would be more efficient if they integrated more of the American approached to craw fish farming with the baskets and crawfish boat. Nothing like farmers introducing another evasive species to a new habitat
@qelasta

American grow Padi early in season, and harvest them. After harvest then only they harvest the crayfish before winter set in which yield less than what this entrepreneur doing here in Cambodia which harvest all year along.

Some if these comments... 🤦🏾‍♀️ Why does America have to push their ways on other peoples outside of America... I Appreciate and Respect the technique these farmers use in this video... At some point with this technology we have today, one day it will be no longer, so it is important to keep up with older traditions of manual labor... I feel more respect, care, and understanding is given to whatever we do manually which is very humbling... I am hoping I misunderstood what you meant in your comment...

Return Activated Sludge (RAS)? I think he's saying that he's using his own blend of bacteria cocktail. And some farmers use liners when raring those crawfish in earthen wells, because mud and diseases, and also your local fisheries department might have some environmental protection laws. More ethical breeders will choose and sort out their brood stock to be free of parasites so the farmers can buy clean and parasite free broods.
