Durians come in hundreds of varieties and at varying price points. Do expensive durians taste better than cheaper ones? And does Mao Shan Wang, one of the most popular types of durian in Singapore, always taste the best?
Durian lovers Khai, Caleb and Lena think they can identify the different varieties just by taste. In this web extra, #TalkingPoint host Steven Chia puts their claims to the test - putting them through a blind taste test to find out if they can tell the difference between D24, D88 and Mao Shan Wang.

Big seeds don't necessarily mean bad quality. They can simply be a characteristic of a different variety. For example, the D13 red prawn variety has large seeds, but they're known for being sweet and delicious.

How can B be MSW, according to Caleb, if it's fibrous? MSW is hardly fibrous. And D13 is very very easy to identify, whether through its colour or taste. It's super sweet, with a noticeable milky taste. That's why it's a good introductory durian to beginners as it's not so pungent and more readily acceptable by people new to durians. Interesting that all three got big seeds when trying out C even though its a MSW. Yes, they do have big seeds at times, but to get all 3 at the same time.....either the seller intentionally picked it or real big coincidence. I thought it might have been a D24 based on their descriptions and the 3 big seeds. Honestly, a good MSW should be very easy to tell apart from other cultivars because of its really strong taste profile. Nobody described C as strong-tasting so I can only conclude it's not a very good representation of the MSW "brand". But as the boss said, now is not the peak season for MSW so this C is probably the "best" MSW one can get right now. Also, I wonder if the testers "neutralised" their mouth after each test by thoroughly rising with water. If not, the subsequent samples may have had their taste profile affected by the previous sample.

This is idiotic. A stronger tasting durian will smother the taste of the next, especially when swallowed. Durian taste persists on the pallette for a few hours, even with washing. Even with wine tasting, testers try not to swallow.
