Basic M/G code with some macros is used to generate the program. To cut this keyway in a cnc it requires multiple passes with the broaching tool. Using macros will shorten the length of the program plus will give you some flexibility with trying different depths of cut.

Done this many times, but never went the macro method, just simply programmed an M97 P, with an L count that was my depth of cut, divided by my cut per pass. About 4 lines of code and you're off to the races. I do like the off-the-shelf tools for this though. I always have had to custom grind my own, or have a grind shop do it for me. As for the haas being able to do this, it is true they can, but it has to be one with a Vector Drive spindle. The older models, say pre-1997 or 98 had a pin that locked the spindle and it did not orientate it accurately and or held it in position good enough to do this. You will screw up your spindle on one of the older machines and ruin your broach.

That process is not broaching but sloting. A broach is a linear multi tooth profile cutter. The tool shown is a internal keyway cutter.

What kind of rake do you find works best for you? It looks like you're only running 1-2 degrees there which is impressive but I feel like it would lead to excessive rubbing?

What year is this machine? 2015+ only have magnetic spindle lock :(

Which software you're using for this broaching keyway? Or whats the name of the cam operation to make sure turns spindle stay locked ??

how in a Haas, they dont have a true spindle locktalked to haaz about it today

So the question is simple. Does the producer of the HAAS machine anticipate the use of a milling machine for making slots by chiselling in a continuous production process? Doesn't that risk voiding the warranty in the event of a failure caused by overloading the spindle in this way? Isn't it that the spindle load is calculated only for the rotary motion and not for the reciprocating motion?

@@scottbrooks6571 No, if you look at the tool change, it orients to the M19 position, then rotates back after the tool change.

@@MegaJohnhammond yes just use either a p value or a s value. So the code would look like M19 P250.456 the p and s are going to be the spindle angle of the broach.

65,000 keyways already machined in this Haas machine so yes it can handle it

@@johnl5177 We hold the spindle in location with the M19 command. Then right a loop routine in Macro's. In the loop we start at a min dimension and increment out to a max dimension. Once the max dimension is meet the program exits the loop.

@@scottbrooks6571 I'm not cnc machinist but I wonder how is it possible without physically locking the spindle somehow. The holding force comes just from spindle motor? Is it servo with a brake or what?
