Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared today before Congress (House Judiciary Committee) to discuss potential antitrust legislation, their control over items like the iPhone app store, and Apple's general industry superiority. Committee members grilled Tim Cook on whether Apple is indeed treating competitors and small businesses fairly as they begin to achieve market dominance. This is CNET's supercut of the live event, specifically everything referring to what Apple had to say, but you can also watch the Facebook, Amazon, and Google supercuts here at CNET.

Zack Rocky I see why you compare Technology to Religion.. But you have to think a little deeper. What if God/Bible had a sticker on it that said: “Terms will be changed when we want, without telling you and without your consent” That’s the Freedom these companies have. Do you think people would follow a Religion that constantly changes there outlook based on Data from the people? We give these Companies to much freedom with how they control our Data. And the profits they make from it don’t go in any of our pockets. Yes they offer “free services,” but I think my Data is worth more than a Word Processor or any Operating System.

Even if it was the only mall in the state, nothing is stopping other people from building their own mall. It’s anti-competitive if they prevent people from buying land and building their own malls. It’s a monopoly if they go out and buy all the available land and fill them with their malls. Apple’s devices were developed and built by them; that is their “store front” they created it, the phone hardware is like the land upon which a mall property owner builds their store front. Nothing is stopping another person from making their own device and setting up their own App Store. Yeah it’s near impossible for most to get into the phone making industry. Since having the most information possible is primordial, it also prevents the interviewed person to take as many time as they want to answer a question, thus not allowing Congress to ask all the questions needed. If they wouldn't cut them, they would probably only have time for 1 questions instead of 5 or 6. And they needed as much information as they can to take appropriate measures. I feel bad for Tim, had to be there for hours to only have to answer a fraction of questions the others had to answer. Apple Def might have issues with control due to size, but it is nothing compared to the likes of fb, Google or Amazon. Surprised Microsoft wasn't brought in too

But Microsoft doesn't have a big market share in app store, that's the sole reason why Windows Phone died. I don't see a single reason for Microsoft to be here

Tim obliterated each of them lol 😂 honestly I understand people being scared of apples power but realistically I don’t think they’re in the wrong for maintaining the same business practice for over a decade. The Mobile platform can make SO MUCH money and app developers ranting over a 30% cut by apple which has been the same forever! (apple has always been upfront about it) you’re not developing for Android.. you’re developing for a much better ecosystem and customer base that statistically spends more.
@shanep.7184
@shanep.7184 3 жыл бұрын
The fact is that the 30% cut breaks some business models. Spotify can’t profit if they have to take that big of a cut while charging the same as Apple Music. That being said, The developers need to somehow pay Apple. Office 365 charges $80/year and includes like 5 (objectively simple) apps. Charging $99/year is not nearly enough when you get cutting edge machine learning, AR, and other APIs, Xcode, App Store hosting, and the luxury of not having to market and sale of the billions of hardware these software run on.

I would say the question about iBooks was pretty accurate. While I do agree about the parents control apps matter of data collection, the timing was pretty coincidental to remove them from the App Store as Apple launched Screen Time.
@jasper6916

i don’t think the congress woman did enough research. screen time is not an app, it’s is fully integrated into ios software. therefore screen time is not a direct competitor. i thought she was onto something when she asked as to why some similar apps were deleted, but tim’s answer was perfectly reasonable.

baby bean the way questions are phrased is so accusatory and assumes information that is simply false. To get accurate answers about the things that are actually important, they should know more about the topic they’re asking about. Just simple things like one of the women saying Screen Time is an ‘app’ when that just isn’t the case. It’s literally the same as saying Apple is competing with apps that can turn on and off airplane mode just because Apple has a toggle for it in settings. Most questions are phrased in an annoyingly closed manner because an open discussion wouldn’t be comprehended and they’re mostly just trying to make these companies look ‘guilty’
