Cnicht - Is it Snowdonia's easiest mountain hike?

Still in Snowdonia National Park, I head to Croesor, a sleepy village that is the starting point for me to go hiking Cnicht. Arguably one of the easiest mountains to climb in the National Park at less than half the distance of Snowdon. The Cnicht walk packs a real punch with stunning views of the mountain for most of the way up, and a small scramble right at the top to keep things interesting. Significantly more quiet at the summit than that of Snowdon, but with views over Snowdon, the nearby mountain ranges and the expansive sands at the coast, the Cnicht hike is well worth the effort.

Snowdonia has Cnicht, the Lake District has Catbells, can you recommend any other areas that have these 'easy' mountains to tackle? I love a hike that requires less effort but still gives big rewards so am always eager to hear suggestions from others!

When Adventure Knox if you're ever back in north wales & just want to do an 'easy' hill I can suggest Moel Famau, it's a long way to come just for that so you could take in Foel Fenlli opposite to make it a bit more challenging or follow some of the Offa's Dyke path, there are some tremendous views on a good day 😁

9:54 camped here 2 weeks ago. Watched the sun go down over Hebog and rise around the corner of Cnicht. Amazing. Did a fantastic 15 mile loop taking in 11 Nuttalls topped off with an icecream at the Croesor cafe.

Whoa, what a spot to pitch up your tents at. So close to the top for an early morning summit for the sun rise - though I bet even from that flat section it would have been the same! 15 miles is amazing with those mountains - the ice cream at the café sounds very well deserved!

The jets are going through "The Mach Loop" its a valley they travel through super low to train. You get a lot of US airforce as well as RAF and other countries aircraft going through. Cnicht looks an amazing day out. I hope to do this some day.

I've only ever seen Cnicht from a distance at Porthmadog. It's always impressed me by it's shape, but I never knew that it is so rocky in parts. The rewards at the top are of those lovely views all around, and many thanks for doing this walk to show us what can be seen. Take care.

Hi Ffranc. Like yourself, from photos I'd assumed there was no rocks but thankfully I'd read about them before we tackled the mountain - they were a lot of fun though (at least for someone who likes scrambling!) 100% agree about the views from the top, so gorgeous!

It's a lovely mountain and there are lots of other really nice peaks nearby, I love the Moelwynion, but the easiest proper mountain I've done is Tal y Fan, it's less than a mile from the road to the summit, it's a great mountain with amazing views though.

Good catch with the fighter jets - lucky you had your trainers on! I can see why they call it the Welsh Matterhorn - looked amazing from that first vantage point. Wonderful views from the top as well, glad you got a clear day. Nice energy booster at the end there - well deserved I'd say! Are you still shooting with the ZV-1? If so, are you using standard or active stabilisation? I've started using mine on active - it does a great job of keeping things stable but cuts in quite a bit. Thinking of giving standard a go.
@WhenAdventureKnox
@WhenAdventureKnox 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm still using the ZV1 and I use the active stabilisation as I'm often on rocky ground. I agree that the crop isn't great but I prefer that over the bumpy-ness. It's not unusual for me to use further stabilisation in Premier Pro too... I don't have the steadiest of hands! I loved that those fighter jets flew by, pleased you enjoyed seeing them too 🙌

Great video, you struck it gold with the weather, where did you park?
@WhenAdventureKnox
@WhenAdventureKnox 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah we were very fortunate with the weather for the full week we were up there, only 1 'miserable' day but we still made the most out of it. If you look on Google Maps at where 'Oriel Caffi Croesor' is in Croesor, there's a car park about a 1 minute walk along a footpath from the café. It's not obvious on Google satellite as it looks like a cluster of trees on there, but it's because the car park is surrounded by very mature tree's. When we went, there was a blackboard advertising the café at the entrance to the car park as well as the official national park sign. Unlike other car parks we used on this trip, this one was free had no parking machine at all (though we did this hike early June 2021) Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please just ask :)

@@WhenAdventureKnox thank you for the reply, very kind, how long would you say it took to reach the top, from where you parked?
@WhenAdventureKnox
@WhenAdventureKnox 2 жыл бұрын
I've just had a look at the time stamps from my 1st video shot at the car park and the clip filmed at the top and it was 2 hours 40 minutes between the two. The filming definitely slows me down, especially when I leave the camera somewhere to film us walking and go back for it (the things we do to be creative eh?) so I'd maybe shave off about 40 minutes if not filming things. Hope this helps too. If you have any other questions, again just shout out, happy to help where I can :)

Ooooh yes, I'd forgotten that Cnicht meant Knight and it's one of the few mountains in Snowdonia that doesn't have a Welsh name and is instead an old English name. (Snowdon is another one that isn't Welsh) We met some people a few days before who were hiking the Welsh 3000's that you researched - seems like a lot of effort! 🥵
