It’s just not modern or usable ENOUGH. The owner of the building/ land is going to put something way better there like an indoor ski resort or a parking lot. #capitalism

Tim Wasko that's stupid... You know that we can actually put a parking lot UNDER GROUND right? And what if they just build a ski resort somewhere else...? Wasting a good building for that stuff? THAT'S STUPID...

***** Not as expensive as repairing structural damage to surrounding buildings and the clean up costs of traditional demolition. But costs isn't the only factor, think about all the public safety issues in demolishing that building with explosives. Not to mention all of the lawsuits that could come with it.

Much has been made of the method of destruction, but it has never been explained WHY they are demolishing it. WHY? Why demolish a tall, imposing and fairly attractive building in the heart of Tokyo? It's only 30 years old and it doesn't look old. Was there anything wrong with it structurally? It seems ridiculous to waste a building like this - surely a good use could have been found for it? Seems especially stupid in this economic climate.

All you need to do to bring down the strongest, tallest, buildings...is to start a small fire in an office or two and it will fall perfectly in its own footprint within a couple hours. We learned this new technique on 9/11 when it happened to Building 7. There is no longer a need for bombs, explosives etc.

probably many factors, one being inefficient utilization of space. Building footprint is much smaller than the actual allotment. Real estate is at a premium in Tokyo, If youve been there you would understand. Might also be to update the building to better building codes ie better pilings etc for things like ground liquefaction and earthquake standards. Could just be because the new owner didnt want an old building there. Buildings, even construction techniques in japan are years ahead technology wise compared to most western countries, people want new not old especially when it comes to paying crazy rent.

reversing the construction process would be to put a crane up and take it down in pieces. this is slick except what do you do to take the floor out? maybe some good salvage, though.

They had adapted the technology even more than the lowering of each floor now produces electricity as well. Pretty neat.

It might be expensive and slow but it could really help the environment because they could just re-use the material and everything inside of it

I have heard about this before from a different source. They recover about 90% of the original building if I remember correctly compared to about 60% using North American demolition techniques.

This is pretty much one of the best ways to get rid of a skyscraper in dense areas. Sure, you can just use TNT, but it wouldn't be wise in a large city.

Its as much as environmentally friendly as it is human friendly. You don't want to ruin the place you depend on for survival. It's not about saving the dolphin or some frog. It's about preserving and environment that suitable for your survival so you can continue making ignorant comments from your parents basement. Beijing is an example of creating an unsuitable environment for human beings.
