I'm sorry, but I am old enough to remember Reagan and his administration during the 80's. He started a lot of this crap. He allowed the Fundamentalist Evangelical Christians (Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority) into the White House, he had a huge military buildup, started de-regulation, blew up the debt and deficits, gave tax breaks to Corps and Rich, Iran-Contra, "Reaganomics", War on Drugs, started the de-funding of public schools, didn't do anything regarding HIV/AIDS until Nancy's friend Rock Hudson died, and allowed some of the GOP to start with the division of the public. He was NO Moderate, he was Right wing and maybe not as bad as some today. But he leaned right hard on his policies. Trump and MAGA is the end result of the things Reagan set in motion 40 years ago.

"Keep government out of our boardrooms and our bedrooms." - Ronald Reagan
@CaminoAir6 ай бұрын
Deregulation (as a pure ideology) and small government (as a pure ideology) are a large part of the deterioration of the overall situation in America. There is no political ideology that will be effective in dealing with reality and all political parties have to keep adapting. Government, business and the individual citizen have to be kept in balance (which is impossible, but still it has to be attempted as best as can be). One of those goes out of balance.....then you've got major, major problems.
@danmayberry11856 ай бұрын
@@CaminoAir Well said. Cutting bureaucracy and red tape sounds appealing, but as you say it calls for a measured approach. Suddenly in the '80s I could cut hair, fix transmissions and run a daycare, without certification, all out of my home garage. That could not only bring those trades into disrepute, but also affect people's trust in expertise, in a broader sense. Say, for example, specialist institutions become viewed with such skepticism and mistrust that voters are left to decide the fate of something or someone, without the benefit of an informed opinion.

I remember growing up as a kid in the 80's when Reagan was president and it wasn't "The Shining City On The Hill" as there were quite a bit of the same problems back then as well but it did seem like there was more of a willingness for people no matter which party to at least come to some sort of common ground to find solutions to problems or at least make an attempt to instead of at each others throats like now. I also felt like as a kid despite all of these problems happening in the world back then I also felt that there was a chance to do something exciting and something that actually had meaning to it and to feel useful for something but I don't see that same optimism now but the opposite as everyone just seems to be more cynical and want's to put everyone down just so they feel better about it. A different America than what I remember as a kid. We also had better movies back then and music that inspired hope as well instead of well I don't know what kind of inspiration there is for kids now. Fact: Ronald Reagan was an actor who was heavily financed by military corporations & when Reagan took office the budget for the military inflated exponentially. Reagan is accused of extreme interference with developing countries who wanted to choose either democracy or socialism - both systems of government that would have made the price of oil, gas and other resources increase. Genocide in Guatemala, the Iran contra affair in Nicaragua, just two examples. The possession of guns also accelerated due to the lack of regulation during his term. At Woodstock, 1969, when Reagan was just Governor of California, this song was sung in his honor, “He’s a drugstore gun toting man, he’s the head of the ku klux klan. When trouble comes rolling around, you’ll be lucky to get out of town. He don’t like resistance I know, cause he said it last night on a big TV show, he’s an all night singer in a country band, & if you don’t like him, you don’t understand”

Considering her father who declared "if it takes a bloodbath, let's get it over with" as well as the nuggets “A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan, walks like Jane and smells like Cheetah.” hired T.K. Jones to emote: "Dig a hole, cover it with a couple of doors and then throw three feet of dirt on top. . . . It's the dirt that does it. . . . . If there are enough shovels to go around, everybody's going to make it." This bit of cheery advice was offered by Thomas K. ("T.K.") Jones, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Strategic and Theater Nuclear Forces in a 1982 interview with Robert Scheer of The Los Angeles Times. And it wasn't just what Ronald Reagan said, it was what he didn't say about AIDS, weapons for Contras, cocaine and Kissinger. I will never forget how Reagan stopped funding for low income housing and opened the door wide open to homelessness. Also, his daughter broke the relationship from her father because she could not stand some of his policies.
@DK-zu6tt5 ай бұрын
And he removed funding for community healthcare, to pave the way for insurance to put a stranglehold on us. The community health centers used a sliding scale and anyone who could not afford basic health care, well-woman care, pediatric care and mental health services could go there and get care for a reasonable price. I still remember in my small Northern CA town, the day they closed the Community Clinic. Homeless people just wandered around the outside, and camped in front of it, I think, hoping it would open. That's part of this legacy too, and our current healthcare system, which bankrupts people for basic health needs and prevents the poor and housing unstable population from getting mental healthcare, which snowballs into chronic homelessness. Reagan was horrible.

No, they are standing up for the concept that a person is considered innocent - meaning they retain all of their rights, including to run for office - UNTIL proven guilty in a court of law. Until,, and unless, that happens AND the conviction goes before the SCOTUS, and they agree to hear it, to preserve impartiality, and to avoid having to recuse themselves, they make NO inference of guilt or innocence in matters (criminal or civil) before the lower courts and answer only the points of law before the court. In Colorado the question is whether or not a person not convicted of insurrection can be barred from the ballot. Likewise, an appeals court ruling that presidential immunity does not extend to the president once unelected should he be accused of fraudulently attempting of subvert the election, is not expressing an opinion on the guilt of the former president, just on the limits of his priveledge and a reafirmation on the rights of the accused.
