The Boxmotor is alive!

Over the summer I managed to get the boxmotor out of the barn for the first time in over 10 years, it was quite a chore to move it as the ties had rotted out under its track so the car was derailed due to a wide gauge. Once getting the track back in gauge it was able to be taken out and we went for a short ride, only to discover what I had feared would happen- the car will not clear one of the trees on the west end loop. This meant I had to run backwards to return to the barn, I have decided that this year I will take the tree down so it can be operated the full route. You will notice all the sparking at the wheels on the first run by, this is because of all the rust on them from not running for so long. Even the headlight was blinking due to the extreme voltage drop caused by the rust! You can expect to see this car out running more in the future as I have some exciting upgrades planned for it, so stay tuned for that and in the meantime enjoy this little adventure :) Edit- just noticed one of the run by clips is in there twice, no idea why it did that when I uploaded but hey the sparks are cool so why not enjoy it twice lol

What an amazing little railway, so much character and charm especially with the overhead power. My 5 cents on the sleepers is maybe soak them in oil to repel what looked like white ant damage. And as for rodents buy the latest generation baits because the earlier bait styles seem to have no effect on pesky destructive rodents.

I would be tempted to pour a concrete floor for the whole car shed. It would solve the tie rotting problem and give you a nice clean place to perform repairs, maintenance, and/or rebuilds. Tracks, of course, would be bolted to, and level with, the floor.

Narrow gauge railways in the UK often use plastic recycled sleepers especially for replacement in situ. Lasts forever, and termite proof I assume as we don't have such pests.
@CNW4145
@CNW4145 Ай бұрын
We have plenty of pesky termites, but they dont bother the treated ties until the treatment is gone. I've looked at using plastic ties several times, but they are so expensive. You would think that someone would be happy to get rid of melted milk jugs and bottles but they charge nearly $20 per tie. I get my wood from lumberyards that have rejected stock, like its too warped or has breaks in it so its much cheaper to buy. I can get a wood tie for about $2-$3 and they last at least 25 years so the cost of plastic just doesnt make sense unfortunately.

Herrliches Fahrzeug !
