Coaching vs Talent debate in youth football coaching is an old debate. I feel like great Talent is a good to have on your team even if you are already a good youth football coach. We spend extra time upfront evaluating and drafting our team and it pays off in the long run.

I look at it this way. A well coached team can beat a more talented team if they are coached poorly. If coaching is even the team with the better playmakers will win. There is a rare occasion when you come across a kid or two on a team that can take over the game, but these kids are rare. My favorite quote that I tell my teams all the time "Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard" so no matter if you believe you are the talented player or one that is not as talented. Don't let anyone out work you!

I agree, but at the end of the day it is nice to have the stud running back too.

Great topic. I think it takes a combination of coaching and talent. Ultimately players have to execute on the field regardless how great the coach is. That said this year we had an exceptional talent on our team. He took over most of pur games but in the end the teams that were well coached with a equally talented or slightly less talented team were able to beat us.

Respectfully, I disagree. It seems like you are assigning relatively more importance to talent vs. coaching. (Caveat: I have never coached in a league with any sort of draft. I have always been assigned teams.) You mention that if you don’t have a lot of talent, you should “coach your butake off.” It seems to me that you always should but, another caveat, I have a badonkadonk, not a butake. I can look back on the games I have lost and am fairly certain I would have won most of them if I hadn’t made coaching mistakes. Great video…thanks for posting!

in youth football if all things are equal then talent will win out. I have beaten many teams that had talent and were not coached well. I've made a good coaching career out of it, but talent plays a large part of it too. Yes, and many times one super stud can beat out a rec league division. especially if your team did not get the talent. at the end of the day, you must have talent. I guess you can take Tom Brady in the NFL as an example or Peyton Manning. It means a ton to have the best talent available. Great talent makes good coaches look great.
