As mentioned in the video, this is how it should feel when using heart rate: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l75krKqK0rvdYZs.html

I normally use my HR when doing easy pace runs only

Thx team. I haven't done many races but last year I did my first HM and it was evident in the first 10 mins that my chest heart rate band was either showing an extremely elevated heart rate or it was not functioning properly. My game plan was to follow my HR for the full duration. After 10 mins I completely ignored it and went by feel until I crossed the line. Your guidance here is a great reminder for my next race. I am going to go by feel and have a pacing strategy that will need to be adjusted depending on conditions.

I used to slow down on uphill to make it to the top when I used to race, then I found I had great reserves of energy if needed to sprint, no watch

I've never heard such a clear but complete description of cardiac drift! I've found HR training resulted in progress, but was frustrating and took the joy out of my running. I'm now trying to learn to run based on RPE, as RPE relates to HR. I'm getting pretty good at guessing what my HR is, and I enjoy my running again!

I had a half marathon over new year's eve. I used heart rate during the race, but it actually helped me make sure I didn't start out TOO slow. My back half of the race was about 3-4 mins faster than the front half, which isn't the worst, but it's something to think about going forward.

I simply used perceived exertion.

I agree, power is best at revealing true effort for those who are not great at pacing and don’t introspect well (i.e., can’t run very effectively “by feel”). So can we expect more videos on using power? Stryd? Runscribe? Garmin wrist? Garmin pod? Apple watch? I searched for videos by your team but didn’t find power in any of the video titles.

You're most welcome Chandra, glad you got some value out of it. Best of luck for your half, please let us know how it goes.

Well, of course, if one misuses an approach, one should probably stop using it, or start using it properly. The title is wrong - none of these arguments lead to the conclusion "stop using HR". It should rather say "Caveats/things to avoid when training/running by HR". But I guess it doesn'T click-bait as well

One can't use heart rate alone. I'd rather use perceived effort, pace, breath, feel, muscular pain, and experience. I dont train by heart rate. Its just an information point.

I think heart rate works for me, I kept a stable 170 bpm throughout my last marathon, I knew anything above was too much, I felt good and kept it stable from start to end, power was stable at 280W per my coros. I went off too fast last year at 180bpm and had to get it under control the whole way.

Great video Guys.. and Gal ♥️ I only run 5K parkruns as my 'race' What %age of my max HR should I run at? Or should I put this question on the forum?

Came across your text, looks like we’re on the same page, best advice I can contribute is buy a book like maffetone book of endurance and 80/20 by mark Fitzgerald. Listening to pod casts, KZfaq podcasts are not bad but your getting only excerpts. Your question. Is discussed in 80/20 but maffetone is superior cos it covers everything. Enjoy!

I think using perceived effort on top of pace,l and HR is most important imo

Heart rate monitors can become inaccurate during a race. So it's important to use all data you have RPE, Pace, HR etc during training and race day so that isn't the only place to look.

Where can I learn more about power?
@JasonHamner
@JasonHamner Жыл бұрын
Could not disagree more! Heart rate is far superior to power for pacing. Why? Because it is equivalent to your effort level and is thus independent of your fitness and running efficiency. Power is the opposite... completely dependent on things that vary with your training load! Now, yes, I agree you should not use HR by itself and you need to "calibrate" it to your effort level, but how is that different than power? The advantage of HR for pacing is that I can go into a race in the middle of a training block with no clear idea of what my fitness level is and pace it PERFECTLY with HR. You absolutely CANNOT do that with power.
