Video of Michael Evanko and Todd Hubler fly fishing the Elkhorn Creek in McDowell County, West Virginia. This video was shot on February 3, 2018 on publicly accessible, unregulated water. Miles of the Elkhorn Creek contain populations of wild rainbow and brown trout. Rumor has it that a stocking truck broke down on Rt. 52 in the 1970s and the driver dumped his payload of trout into the Elkhorn. Those fish flourished and populated the entire river system. The Elkhorn Creek has quite a bit of trash in and along its waters. The local TU Chapter holds a clean-up day each year.

I’m a West Virginian and fish this creek often. This stream does not need any added pressure. This video continue to adds pressure to a stream with no regulations. It is becoming more populated and the fishing has decreased due to people keeping trout and mishandling. If you do fish this creek, please consider coming to the annual cleanup April 21st

Tyler Francis I'm a WVirginian too. I used to fish that creek often. Now much less since I moved out of state. I participated in the TU cleanup days when Ernie Nestor, god rest his soul, was only able to muster 8-11 people to help. I did those religiously until more than 25 people were participating. If I can ever get back for one I will. If you want to discuss your concerns I'd be happy to talk directly. I get your concern, but this stream has been well known for years. People from out of state just don't fish it with frequency because of the trash and straight pipe sewage. From one Marshall grad to another, tight lines.

Tyler Francis Hey Tyler. I agree with you. I had a "secret" spot here in the California Sierras that I told a couple people about. It used to be pristine but now there's litter everywhere and it's been taken over by those who kill and keep. I'll never do that again and I'm happy you mentioned the cleanup as well.

I too live in WV and this stream is common knowledge to anyone who fishes,it is an oddity in the Coalfields especially ravaged MCD county.I do not fish that stream as I can be on the Cranberry in less time.It is a pretty little creek and the coalfields could support more clean creeks if people would push to get them cleaned.
@BrandonSmith-yp1ss
@BrandonSmith-yp1ss 6 жыл бұрын
The fishing on the Elkhorn is better than the fishing on the Cranberry, hands down. Now, the cleanliness of the water....well...that's just something you have to deal with on the Elkhorn.

Small streams like this with native populations are my favorite but I have to take a trash bag with me now to pick up all the litter on the streams here in the Sierras. Everyone has it wrong on how the trout got in Elkhorn creek. A guy that was stocking pinnacle creek would only stock the upper section and on his way back to the hatchery he’d stop on Elkhorn and empty the truck. They new something was up on pennacle creek because the fisherman only caught fish in the upper section so the hatchery started following and recording the stocker. The guy got fired from his job. This had been going on for a while, several years I’m told. This is the true story on how trout became introduced into Elkhorn creek and it’s tribs. Still, a great video!!!

From Michigan, former West Virginian... Enjoyed every minute of the video. If the West Virginians wake up and start taking care of their waters, the area could have an income source to replace coal. I would plan one of my trips down there but I am used to cleaner streams. Thanks for highlighting this stream.
@andrediaz6205

If you think clean trout fishing is gonna be stable enough to support an economy I’ve got bad news for ya bud. These waters could be flooded with trout and 100 people can come visit a week and spend 50 -100 during their weekend trip and that still won’t be enough it would be nice but they’d most likely clean the fish out within days and then go home and then leave more trash then was there before they got there. We need something else fishing is great hobby to pass time with and kill stress for the locals but not to support the community and live from it. And they do have a yearly creek clean up don’t say “if wv cared about their waters” because this a stream that wasn’t supposed to be able to hold trout so yes people neglected it cause they thought there was nothing else to it. Trout streams in wv are taken care of and all of our waters are not dirty trust me you can find sweet fishing holes from the most northern tip to the southern and east to west the whole state is covered in trout streams

LOL. From Broadhead to Elkhorn Creek. I live in Ashland, Ky. formerly Forks, Pa. So many inspirations while watching this delightful video. First time I ever saw someone use a Ketchum in a video. And new rod ,what a switch from Winston to GL.But Very nice. All in all, a pleasure. BTW, what was the air and water temps? And the wading staff, I use one now my sons old ski pole. Noisy but. Thanks Mike.

zenbooter Ketchum tool keeps me from handling fish. Don't know why more people don't use them. Air temps 20-32 degrees. Water temp never went above 40. Guides completely frozen over every three or four casts.
@WoolyBugged
@WoolyBugged 6 жыл бұрын
zenbooter the air temps started out around 28-30 in the morning and hit the Low 40s in the afternoon. Closer to the spring the water temps were around 40 and further away dipped into the high 30s. I have a couple of wading sticks, a Simms and a Leki hiking pole. The hiking pole is actually more solid.

Hey Mike. Ditto on the info. I'm going over there [Welch,WV] soon. Been very interested in the area from Tenn. to Maryland since I arrived here in Ashland, Ky. 7yrs. ago. Also since you tell us your gear I've grown affected to Winston, I always wanted one. Going to Co. in 1st of June to fish the area around Boulder and north for 10 days. Now I have the dilemma with choice. Yah I know, it's a personal thing.
