This is the first honest video about stripping with Citristrip I have seen. I thought I might have some crazy non-scrapable varnish because other videos made it seem like one coat and you’re done but that’s obviously not always the case. Feeling much better about my project. You may have just saved my grandmas antique hutch from the dump. Thanks!

I've stripped quite a pieces to this point, and I have yet to apply one coat and have all the varnish come off. Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you're able to save the hutch. No you need to leave the stripper on longer than he’s doing here. Then you would say yeah but it will dry out. That’s why you use the plastic wrap like he said.

Thank you! This was incredibly helpful. I bought CitriStrip yesterday to refinish an old cedar chest, and tried it earlier today on the top of the chest with marginal results.. Boy, I wish I'd watched your video FIRST! The instructions on the CitriSrip container are so abbreviated and incomplete. Yours are detailed and clear, with lots of practical advice. I know the rest of the project is going to go so much more smoothly, thanks to you.

The problem with this video is his misuse and misunderstanding of the product. One layer is enough. But he should have covered the piece in Saran or plastic wrap. That will keep it wet for several hours or up to one day and will effectively break down the varnish so that when he takes the plastic off and scrapes it, it all comes off. Because he’s not letting it sit long enough that’s why it’s not able to come off effectively. But I recommend covering it in plastic to seal in the moisture! Hope this helps someone or anyone who is watching this and decides to use the product.

I just cut the bottoms out of plastic bags from Target or Walmart or wherever, cut the handles off, and cut them open. Make a big stack, apply the Citristrip in sections and slap on a bag. Sticks like crazy, and lift off hours and hours later. Makes the stripper penetrate into multiple layers, and can remove virtually ALL the paint coats with one application.

Yeah it definitely is a must-have if you have a piece that is heavily stained or you know that it's going to take multiple coats to completely strip it...I learned this the heard way on old antique tables that I restore . Send it down really good and wipe it clean then put a thick coat of the citra on it and then wrap it Saran wrap and try to leave it overnight or twelve hours day ..however...for me it's just easier to do it at night and I get up the next morning and my table is ready to scrape down.. it's not a fix all butit really makes a huge difference if you are having a difficult time getting stain off .. it keeps the citrus wet longer so that it works longer when needed.

Thank you so much for doing this! I am tackling cabinets in my kitchen that need a lot of paint taken off. The previous homeowner put a thick layer of very shiny latex paint over everything in the house. Luckily, the paint comes off in sheets because they didn't prep the cabinets or walls before putting it on. This will be SO much nicer than sanding everything.

I'm striping my kitchen cabinets with Citristrip gel & paste. Works great, no Methylene Chloride or massive fumes, you just have to leave it on longer. A great tip is to apply a generous amount of striper, then cover it up with plastic food cling wrap, let it sit for 24 hours, it's even removing the wood stain from the wood pores.

Overall very good info. I've used this product also, to strip a banister of multiple paint layers; in that case, letting the material stay on the wood for a longer period of time (few hours) is better. 15 minutes is really not much time for the product to work on most things - but perhaps thin layers of finish will come off in that time frame.

I am stripping the bottom paint from a boat that was built in 1953. Citrisstrip is safe and easy to use. I had to apply Citristrip to an area (4'x4') and cover it with plastic sheet for over night. After scraping it the next day I would apply Citristrip to another section, cover it until the next day, and then work that section. I am 79 years old and this project knows how to give me a good workout but Citristrip is tremendous at what it does. I would recommend this product to be used on any wooden piece that you want to look good when refinished.

Great video. I used the Citrus strip aerosol version, and the paint on stuff. I found the aerosol to work better for some reason. I don't know if maybe it's a different formula. It was, spray on, 20 minutes, bam, it all comes off. I don't know if it's more potent or what. I also tried leaving the aerosol citrus on for longer and 20 mins seemed the same as 3 hrs.

Thank you for this video! It makes me want to finally restore my mcm side table this weekend. How do you dispose of the scraped off citrus strip in the metal can? Must the receptical you use to hold the scraped off citrus strip he metal? Are the ragsbuou wipe down sadento wash and use again or must you dispose of them? And what's the safety protocol there?
@CoastalUpcycling
@CoastalUpcycling 5 жыл бұрын
Great questions! The receptacle used can be metal or plastic. Choose one with a wide mouth to make sludge catching easy. I use old coffee cans because I can throw the whole thing away in the garbage. You may want to consider using an old sauce pan. The handle makes it easy to carry with one hand while scraping with the other. Then you can pour the sludge out into the garbage and reuse the pot again...(for CitriStrip only of course!!!! Please don't use it for food again!!!😬). As for the wiping rags, I like blue shop towels. They are thick, sturdy and disposable. Always take any safety precaution you feel you need to. Keep on your splash goggles, gloves and respirator until the CitriStrip sludge is disposed of. Also contact your local city/municipal solid waste people and ask about paint and chemical disposal. I hope this information helps, thanks for watching😀

@@thecerealguy7713 hell yeah to bringing back smoking on airlines. Have you ever had to fly from lax to paris without a cigarette, with all those frenchies getting on your nerves and you cant throat punch them because there might be an air marshal on board? Yeah no, f* that.

This stuff works. I stripped my cabinets about twenty years ago. Low odor, and thick. The other stuff that smelled AWFUL, did not work as well as you remember. Not any better than this stuff. Trust me, I've used both.

Great tips ! I had used this product on a old cedar chest back in the 90s and it came out great. I tried it again today on veneer and obviously didn't use enough. I will be armed for the second go around with plastic wrap as well. Thanks again !

OMG! I can't believe I found this video.. I was using this product today and got so frustrated with it. I mean it works but the residual stuff was a puzzle. I now know I need the low odor mineral spirits to clean it off.

Thanks, great video. I made the mistake of trying to wash out the gel with soap and water. This raised the grain of the wood and made lots of extra work for myself. If I use the stripper again I will do what you did, only washing the piece with mineral spirits.

I just stripped a huge oak desk, and the plastic wrap trick works amazingly well. The only thing I found, however, was that leaving the wood wet with CitrusStrip under plastic wrap for up to 18 hours ended up raising the grain of the oak quite a bit, leaving it very rough to the touch. So quite a bit of sanding was needed. But I'd rather sand to smooth out raised grain than to take off finish! This stuff works GREAT.

I enjoying working on wood projects. I had an old dresser with a matching mirror given to me painted white. At first I thought why didn't they throw it away. I stripped the paint off & now it's in my bedroom. I actually was working on the dresser during 911. I'm now working on a Hoosier cabinet that my husband's grandmother put in her basement to restore, but never did. She passed away at the age of 97. I'm using citristrip to strip the paint off. The paint is in the grain of wood. Making it difficult. Usually most projects had been stained & polyurethane first. I also think since it was being painted they used only pieces of strap wood. This is interesting. I am determined to finish this project.

Hi lisa, yes I live these projects as well! Those older and and antique pieces are built so much better and it's so rewarding to bring them back to their former glory. Good luck on those projects, thanks for watching 😊
